Tweeters - Adding a second pair

Hey guys :)

I've had a nice idea that will be classy if excecuted well or possibly turn to sh!t if it's a dodgy job. Part of it involves adding another pair of tweeters (tweeters only - not the midrange driver) which is something I've never considered or attempted. I'm hoping someone can advise me how to hook them up.

The obvious answer is using the Alpine crossovers that are already running my first set. Can I simply connect the new tweeters up to the tweeter terminals on the original crossover as well? Or will I have to run new wires from my amp (which still has 2 spare channels) to a new set of crossovers to the new tweeters?

The first idea seems all too easy and I'm concerned that power will be sapped from the other components (original tweeter and midrange driver), but then I think, it's only a tweeter, right? Hmmm... I can think of no problems with the latter idea but it will definitely take more time and perhaps more money (?), but I'm not afraid of that if the first idea is a no-go.

Which brings me to my next question: can you buy decent tweeters by themselves (as opposed to in a complete component system)? Is it even possible buy a set of tweeters that come with their own crossovers (without the midrange driver) in the event that I take up the second plan of action? Can you buy crossovers by themselves? Or would I have to buy a whole new componenet system? That would not be cool at all.

I'm hoping the first plan will be the answer but in this case I'd like to do the better-quality job rather than the easier job. So hit me with your knowledge car audio buffs :)

Check my garage dude, you'll find most tweeters fit perfectly into those airvents on the dash.

YOu should be able to pick up good ones off ebay by themselves. Mine came with inline crossovers so i just wired them up to the respective speaker wires. Or you can goto ***** smiths and build your own inline cross over (very easy) to the the job.

The mounting isn't a problem, that's the part I've worked out, it's gonna be sick :P

Thanks for the advice my brother in chrome ;)

check http://www.jaycar.com.au .

theyve got tweeters galore you can buy and add them to your existing system!

heres 1 description of the tweeters i just looked at on there :

CAT. NO. CS2210

Super Car Tweeters - Pair

QTY

1+ $45.00

2+ $40.45

4+ $35.95

Top quality tweeters, made by a specialist manufacturer. Mount these tweeters in the front, either on the doors, or near the dash to give sound systems a good staging effect. They can simply be added to an existing system with a 3.3uF capacitor connected in series. They will then work from about 10kHz upwards. They can be crossed over lower but power handling is affected. They have an extremely flat response and are extremely versatile in their mounting arrangement. There are two bases - one flat and one angled at 45°. Simply mount one of the bases and clip in the tweeter in one of three different angles. Ideal for mounting on doors, panels, near dash, on rear parcel shelf or virtually anywhere. Beware of low priced Chinese made tweeters that may look similar.

Specifications:- System Power: 40WRMS (with 3.3uF x'over cap)- Freq Response: 3kHz-20kHz - Sensitivity: 93dB 1W/1M- Optimum X'over Point: 10kHz - Magnet: Neodymium- Tweeter Direction: 360° - Dimensions 50mm dia, 30mm height at rear - flat base.

need a crossover too?

CAT. NO. CX2640

Super Car Tweeter Crossover

QTY

1+ $11.95

2+ $10.70

4+ $9.50

These crossovers are designed for Super Car Tweeters or most super tweeters. It consists of a 3.3uF capacitor and a 0.10mH inductor mounted in a small plastic case with leads attached.

- Crossover point 10Khz 12dB/oct

- Case size 44(L) x 25(W) x 21(H)mm.

I'm offended nobody has asked what the full idea is

i would say that them alpine tweeters would be fakes.

putting another set of tweeters on the old xover will change the loading on the amp and also change the xover freq'

i dont know what you plan on doing, i wouldnt run 2 sets of tweeters up front unless one set were ambiants which i would only use in an SQ car and only if needed. and then you would also need a xover that would cross them over very high otherwise having them playing the same freq' and same volume will cause multipull source points and make it sound average at best.

as for decent tweeters have a look on www.advanceae.com he has a good range of vifa and scanspeak tweeters.

i ran the Vifa XT25's for 2 years of CAASQ and they were stunning tweeters.

Hahahaha don't dig up old threads like this Jase you make me spend more money

Yeah Micky is right, I became a nerd without even realising it :help:

Nah this plan is still in the mix, I'll be needing a piece of carbon fibre, an engraver, another white neon, the set of tweeters with crossovers, and a day to get it all done... Smells like a summer holiday job :)

Even if I just mount the tweeters without connecting them this will still be visually awesome :ph34r:
