  1. LOL from all my time in the trade i've never come across a mechanic who knows his **** and recommends oil flushes And if you're an engineer too apparently then you should know that the oil flush things could cause more harm than good But nah im apparently an IT guy and your the engineer so you would know To the OP, if i was you i wouldn't listen to rice racing, hes got a few good points but everything else just seems to be a grudge against dealerships I would never run the oil flush stuff through any of my cars or bikes and there is a very good reason for it
  2. ^ Another useless post from you Go ahead and use dot 5 brake fluid, synthetic gear box oil, R compound tyres and top jap brands like dixcel for brakes too then I'll gurantee you your car will run better than it would with oem parts, but does this mean that oem parts are inferior? Not to mention the costs The engines come with a recommended oil viscosity, put in the recommended oil, service it according to the logbook or a little more frequently if you want and you'll be fine Oil flushes are generally considered useless, you can never get 100% of the old engine oil out unless you strip the motor down, so what happens if you leave that oil flush crap inside the motor? Much better off changing oil, going for a long drive and changing it again after if you're really worried about it EDIT: LOL at sludge happening if you use recommended oil, sludge builds up if the oil hasn't been changed in a long time not because you used 15w40 as recommended instead of 5w40
  3. Im only hazarding a guess here but i think there were too many complaints about previous gen prius's being too quiet I know toyota was thinking of doing something like what you described above to ensure pedestrians can hear you but not sure if they've gone ahead with it or not
  4. You don't seem to come off as someone whose spent time in the trade, if anything you sound more like a service advisor or admin person at a workshop who is just assuming based on stories you've heard or things you've seen Nice work on assuming my profession too btw, too bad i actually happen to be a mechanic There is nothing manly about leaving a sump plug loose on your car and having a seized engine while the car is still under warranty Yes apprentices and qualified mechanics hate doing services, but that doesn't mean that they drive your car in, wash the engine and drive it out You do realise that most places have some sort of way for every tech to clock on to jobs and that if a car comes back with a problem the techhy could lose his job? And don't give me the **** about me caring more about my car then a mechanic, thats a given and i never disagreed with you there Caring is not the issue, having the knowledge and skills is, coz shining your car every weekend isn't gonna make it run better The majority of people out there wouldn't know which end of a spanner to hold and would only create more problems for themselves I'll make this short: If you can or want to service your own car, then absolutely do it, its great and you'll save money, but make sure you read up on what you need to do and are confident in doing it and have the tools required and leave it to a workshop till the cars out of warranty
  5. And are you telling me that if you do the same thing 5-10 times everyday for 5 days a week for a whole year you will still provide it the same amount of attention and care every time? Coz yes a lot of apprentices have a careless attitude to servicing cars, but thats because they know it like the back of their hand And yes this occasionally leads to mistakes like loose sump plugs, difference is if they leave it loose the workshop pays for a new engine, you leave it loose you pay for the new engine
  6. Letting owners service their car is a pretty dumb idea, yes there are plenty of people who are very good at diy jobs but there is a much larger number of people who dont know a spanner from a ratchet and the manufactures can't cover their ****** ups under warranty "Oh my mate said its ok to fill up radiator with water, *siezes water pump* takes it back to toyota expecting them to fix it under warranty". There was a thing in the newspaper the other day about a guy whinging that toyota won't pay for his leaking injectors coz the car is not under warranty, but the dealership paid 30-50% of the costs and he was still whinging. Nothing to do with this but just goes to show that there are people out there who love blaming manufactures for everything not realising that the dealership subsided the cost eventhough they didn't need to. Im normally one of the first people who recommends everyone do their service work themselves, but if its under warranty then its better left to a place with an ABN which can stamp your book And I'd be willing to bet that an apprentice can do your service much better than you can, they do 3-8 services each every day on the same models, they know what to look for and what to do and not do Yes occasionally mistakes will happen, but are you telling me that you've never made mistakes? Just cause you shine every bolt on your car doesn't mean you take more care of your car than an apprentice who can knock off a service in 30 mins Its not that hard to take your own oil in and ask them to fill it up with that instead if you're not happy with the oil they use Also the oil they use is not inferior at all, its what recommended, if you wanna go ahead and run race spec fluids in your car then thats your wish but the dealership only needs to put in the recommended spec of fluids
  7. Lol rice racing you make some good points but some very bad ones too Leave the servicing to toyota while its under warranty, if **** goes wrong you have proof that its been serviced at toyota and so they'll take care of it If theres leaks or things wrong with the car which you may miss, but the "****ty first year" won't will lead to getting it fixed for free while its under warranty rather than you never realising until its out of warranty and then try and blame it on toyota And LOL at toyota using inferior parts, yes coz the **** you buy from china is really a lot better for your engine than stuff made by the company who made the engine I do however agree that once its out of warranty a lot of basic service items can easily be done at home and you can save yourself a lot of money
  8. When your using the bluetooth to call someone next time, try and press track ^ button while in conversation to increase mic volume Normally it should display "mic volume +1" or something when its changed, but if it doesnt then take it in to toyota and get the headunit updated. The new update should let you adjust mic volume
  9. You do realise that anything including the fan, radio, sat nav or even a door open sensor going off is draining your battery if the engine isn't running Coz Im finding it pretty funny how people abuse their batteries and then question why it won't start their car
  10. Get a syringe, put a vaccuum hose on it and suck all the old fluid out the master cylinder first Then top up with new fluid Then bleed as prozak suggested, never letting the master cylinder get under halfway or it'll start sucking in air
  11. Do you really wanna go around spending money to make the beep louder when its easy and free to turn around and look at your headlights before you lock the car? I mean the only time its not possible to turn around for a look is if your doing a runner in which case it doesn't really matter if the battery dies or not since your abandoning the car
  12. If after 50 years of experience with cars you think that 10 years battery life is easily achievable then i think your experience would have nothing to do with batteries at all or it would have to do with cars where the battery is only used on start up and never gets drained The more the gadgets/electronics a car has the more power it consumes, so the same battery is working harder than it would in a car without any extra accessories Not to mention the fact that in a car with a radio its pretty to common to see people leaving the radio on for a few mins to an hour or more with the engine off, the occasional i forgot to turn my lights off, ah crap left the interior light on, jumpstart this jumpstart that all adds to shorten the batterys life You'd have to have one very lucky battery for your car if you keep abusing it and it still lasts 10 years, the only way it can maybe last that long is with proper care, topping up water every now and then, leaving it plugged in to a low amp charger, never letting it drain completely etc etc And the amount of people who do that are almost none so yes 10 years is not exactly achieveable and any mechanic who claims otherwise hasn't had much experience with batteries
  13. Update firmware on iphone Most bluetooth problems are phone related
  14. Hows the fluid looking colourwise? Also is it low?
  15. Lol battery life 10 years? Hahaha never heard that one before, maybe in some rare cases Once a lead acid battery has been drained completely it will never be as good as it was before, regardless of whether you charge it up or not You say you've drained it flat 2-3 times already and its got over 87,000ks on it, thats around 4-5 years use and abuse? Long enough for a decent battery to last
  16. Does the noise come on when you brake? Or is it there all the time? Also +1 to everything superdave said Without more info theres a million things that it can be
  17. Not sure of part number but toyota parts should be able to supply you a filter that fits
  18. Take it to toyota I think its a bit of a common problem, a rubber bushing or something needs to be replaced or lubed/cant remember
  19. pictures of the screws/clips & bumper would help
  20. Btw jimmy if the pedal was spongier after the pad replacement then its their fault, cause the caliper piston needs to be pushed back and depending on how its done it can let air into the lines If it was just the same after then they should've probably told you that the brakes need to be bled but is not necessarily part of a pad change
  21. Looks like you mixed up the word pads for rotars. I guess you meant "Best to always machine rotars when replacing pads." K8canb Yes I did, sorry if i confused anyone and caused them to ask their mechanics to machine their pads :P Machining doesn't take that much of your rotors if its done right and if the rotors are not majorly warped, each to their own i guess
  22. Hahahaha you need to put up a better description of where the noise is coming from and what it sounds like Also is it there when the engine is cold/hot/always? Noise on constantly or only when you do/turn on certain things?
  23. Best to always machine pads when replacing rotors But before machining make sure to measure rotors to ensure that they're not undersize
  24. If i remember correctly then aurions had a issue with a dash rattle Dealers are meant to fix it for free if i remember right, cept it takes way too long as the whole dash needs to be taken apart
