Advance Electronic aftermarket system mini review

Hi Guys, being a long time reader, first time writer, I thought i might share my experiences with my last purchase - Advance Electronic DVD/Nav system designed for 2007-2011 Aurion.

I've been watching these prices for a while now and bought mine at (what i thought was a good price) $230 delivered (no reverse camera or TV tuner)

But now, looks like its back up to $549 + $29 delivery.

(My GUI is as pictured- not the youtube video)

Features- DVD (AVI, DIVX, XVID, MP3 etc), GPS, iPod, RDS radio, Bluetooth, TV ready, reverse camera ready, SD card reader and USB for music/video/pictures, virtual cd changer, AV input and 'dual zone' entertainment.

First impressions- Cheap. Very cheap, but might be ok..

Whats in the box? The unit itself, a remote, SD card (in unit), cables/wires, basic mounting hardware, stylus and documentation.

Installation - Around 30 mins. Was a simple case of taking apart the dash and center console and then plug and play.

Note - I forgot to wire up the mic for the BT phone system, will do that later. AV input I've wired up as a 3.5mm music jack.

Pros -

-Cheap.

-Fits quite well. No mods required, just added a few washers to get a flush finish - no biggie.

-GUI is smooth-ish and quite nice.

-Radio is quite sensitive and RDS system works.

-Boasts all the features I was looking for.

-Steering wheel controls work well and can be re-assigned.

-3G modem/WiFi ready (uses Opera mobile browser)

-Can have ANY audio source in background while using GPS.

-iGO GPS system works quite well and new maps are easy to obtain ;)

-Haven't tried the internet connection and browser although it looks promising.

-Has an option built-in to detect or ignore handbrake sensor ;)

-Plenty of AV in/out connectors for extra screens etc

-GUI is in good English.

-Triple RCA outs including sub woofer out. (unit has sub woofer controls)

-Reads my sandisk 2gb SD card perfectly, I'm looking to try an 8 and 16gb card- One thing though, needs to be formatted in FAT32, unit can't read NTFS.

Cons -

-After coming from an Alpine SQ DVD system (D106E) in my BMW E46 unit to this, the sound quality is not much better, if not worse than the stock Toyota/Fujitsu 6 stacker system.

-When I first got the unit, it was like it reset itself each time and wouldn't let me start using it until I calibrated the screen, but that issue has gone now.

-Touch screen is picky at times- works best with a girls fake nails lol otherwise just need to press a little harder.

-DVD sensor is very picky, at times, has trouble reading brand new, original DVDs, but played a few dodgy copies perfectly? CDs are perfect though.

-iPod sound quality is shocking to say the least, so I don't use it- Run my iPod through the 3.5mm jack if need be.

-iPod connection only charges iPod/iPhone when in that mode.

-My new HTC One picks up and streams music via BT no problems, but the play/pause, forward and back track buttons on the unit don't work- need to do this

on the phone. On my old iPhone 4S 64g, these buttons work, only the forward and back track buttons are reversed?

-System wont save my preference between 24h and 12h clock settings?

-The built-in mic does not work.

-Screen Brightness etc settings are weak.

-Manual is useless, luckily the unit is easy to navigate.

-Has trouble playing DivX and XviD movies burnt to DVD (Using Sony DVD DL, burnt at 2.4x). Movies play but audio lags behind video, sounds like a stretched audio tape lol (haven't tried on SD card yet)

Over all How I find it-

Not bad for the money I spent on it. I mainly use the GPS, SD card reader and Bluetooth for music streaming and eventually phone once the mic is wired up. People think it looks pretty stock, so I guess I cant complain too much; It beats the $3500 the dealer wanted to charge me for an OEM unit.

Happy to answer any questions. Cheers guys :)

Good read ... So what's the difference between a $230 unit and a $580 unit? Nothing it seems...well done of paying less than half of what they're asking now haha...

I'd say there's no difference, if I can find a high-end aftermarket unit (eg. Apline, Eclipse etc) with an OEM design for my Aurion, i'll happily get rid of this for one of those, but for now this works for me and if all goes to plan at work, i'll get a company car and get rid of this all together :)

Hi Ryan;

Very nice post, thank you;

I have had a unit installed similar to the one that you mentioned, its a 9inch version that i bought in 2012. Do you know how we could do a system upgrade on the actual unit? i also need help

with upgrading my navigation software that runs off a micro sd card, where can we find upgrades?

Regards
