It's similiar to my headers/exhaust.

Do you mean what it does? Its something to do with taking the pressure off the rest of the exhaust as the engine 'kicks' when you accelerate if its an east-west engine. The flex bends and stops the pressure being placed down the exhaust.

More technical than that, I cant remember what the exhaust fitter said exactly, it was about awhile back.

Edit... as for the welding... I'd expect better for that price.

The flex pipe is as sr5_rolla said.

The picture is not of 1zz extractors. The flange has Thunder on it, so I assume they are Thunder Cat extractors? I'm no expert, but the tack welds on the 'external surface' could have done the whole circumference to be of some use.

the headers pictured are not 1zz headers, they look a lot like the A-series headers for 4A and 7A engines where the exhaust ports are on the radiator side in the transverse setup.

It's common for the headers to be tacked on the pipe side of the flange, then fully welded on the port face before machining. Reduces the amount of warpage in the flange and HAZ of the weld at the tube.

Here's a set I did a while ago prior to facing the flange:

Thunder is a Taiwanese brand, and they make 4-to-1 headers for 1zz corolla. They are popular amongst the 'Altis' community and is sold all across asia.

Speak to DHC09, has he has a set which i used to own. He had them ported prior to installing.

The picture is wrong, it looks more like a set of honda headers.

Cheers.

PM CJ about the headers if you want more info. He got the headers installed on The Goose not long after she went to QLD.
