help with replacement bulbs

hey guys,

when i got my car, i didnt really know that the heating/cooling controls were meant to illuminate at night. silly right?

but a friend used to have my car and he tripped out because it was so dim. apparently you're meant to be able to see the fan dials, cold/hot dials, etc.

is there an easy way of replacing the bulbs to make them work again?

the bulbs are replacable, but there is no easy way of doing it... let me see if i can find the instructions for you.

ive taken the dashboard out before but i when i did that, the whole thing didnt come off, it was stuck at where the heater/cooling controls were. i took out every screw i could see. maybe theres a hidden one somewhere?

u need to disconnect the heater/aircon cables

Is the brightness dial (right hand side of ignition) turned all the way clockwise so the pic of the bulb is upright?

yeah, its on max brightness. each button's led works ie. the 5 buttons for modes, rear demister. but its just the fan dial and cool/hot dial which should be lit up, i think the bulb is dead or something.

man i have a speed cable that needs to be replaced, tightened.. not looking forward to that.. so i'm just using my GPS in speedomode...

just dont have the time to muck around with the dash

hmm.. so maybe its a bad connection then.. i haven't looked into it enough to know how its rigged up... the needle intermittently gives the right speed.. then just drops to 0... perhaps if i simply reseat the harness it will come good.

I have the same problem.... One day.. I'm going to strip all the T5 and T10 bulbs out and put blue ones in... one day...

If you happen to be in Brisbane.... I could probably give you a hand after doing it myself.. I have the repair manual which tells me how to do it....

And yes.. ST185 is electronic ... not mechanical... it's 8 pulse.. not the standard 4 pulse that you get in most cars.... You should look up your wiring diagram to see which cable on your ECU wiring harness is the "SPD" connector.. should be a big fat connector... I'm suspecting it's your connection to the actual dial that's screwed...

      Does anyone know if the rear taillights are LED or normal Bulbs? The brake lights dont appear to be working so i thought id check first before pulling it out.

      Thanks. I'm counting on the code being correct. 🤞 No apparent surging, just rough idle. It feels ok at a persistent 60kph but the engine warning light starts to flash at any acceleration thereafter. Slow and steady feels ok.       Poor performance, surging can also be related to dirty/clogged fuel filter I forget the maintenance schedule for these, but in any car it's more of a 'do when you need to' routine

      I fought with Toyota for the last 6 months on this issue. I attempted to reject my vehicle due to safety and Toyota began to investigate my request. During this time they offered me a new engine. I asked if a new engine would affect my rejection claim and they said no. After this they rejected my claim and I supposedly have no further argument as essentially the new engine was a satisfactory response to a major failure under consumer rights. After months Toyota still won't tell me what damage there was that required my engine to be replaced. Other than confirming carbon build up on the manifold months prior to engine replacement. They will not give me any information. Everyone I speak to tells me they cannot comment. I never wanted the repair because the problem is so common I don't feel the repair was enough to prevent a reoccurrence. I even asked for confirmation that a repair would be enough to prevent further occurrence and that the vehicle was safe and would no longer lose power on acceleration. They responded to this with a letter stating Toyota could not provide the information or guarantees I had requested.

      Haha yes. Thanks for the reply. If it was that simple it'd be done already. Getting all the other stuff off to gain access will take some time for me. Unsure if I'll have a crack at this as a bit time poor...I think I'll give the mechanics a call tomorrow. It had a recent service...hopefully they can take it in asap. (daughters car).

      P0356 - Ignition Coil 'F' Primary Control Circuit/Open

      Last weekend, engine on startup was running rough. OBD2 Scan revealed a P0354 error code. Cause proved to be a loose connector to the ignition coil on cylinder 4. Quite some time ago, I had previously viewed a YouTube video about using a zip tie as a repair instead of replacing the connector with a broken clip. As an immediate alternative, I used a small shrink wrap to provide a more secure connection. Have to find a suitable zip tie as per the following YouTube video.
