I'd be guessing T40 or W40, what engine does it have?

Is it a column or floor-shift manual?

if you can get a 4-speed manual to fit (most likely W40), then a W50 5-speed will drop right in too.

i have no idea im completly new to toyotas

Alrightey, check your build plates in your engine bay. It will say engine type, transmission type, etc. We need to know transmission type to give you some more help.

How do you shift gears - on the steering wheel column, or a floor shift?

Hi,

From what I understand, you will be better off to stop thinking of what gearbox will do the job and start thinking about what family of engines you are talking about i.e. "R" engine. My understanding is all early "R" engine gear boxes are interchangable i.e. R,2R,4R,8R,9R,12R,18R (no later than 18R). With this in mind you can take your pick of 3,4 or 5 speeds. Celica/Corona 5 speeds from behind an 18R should work. Trouble is, you will have to fit a clutch and brake pedal assembly from a donar RT40,46,51,56,80,81 car (I don't know how hard this will be), cut a hole in the transmission tunnel for the gear shift and do something about the column gear shift lever (maybe get acolumn from your donar car).

Ok my mistake, just checked the engine plate, its 2R engine, im fully aware of the having to fit clutch and such through the floor/firewall. I jsut can only seem to find limited info on the net re gearboxs.

There is nothing to do with transmission types on any of the plates i could find in the engine bay. Currently its a 2 Speed Autoglide, gear shift is on the tree.
