Newer engines, up to 200,000km I would run a good quality 10W-40. Above 200,000 I would consider running a 15W-40. As for brands, I would recommend either Penrite or Nulon. Before oil changes make sure you run an oil flush like http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Engine_Treatments/Engine_Oil_Flush/. The 5S is fairly prone to sludge so it a good idea to give it a flush.

Thanks for the reply mate.

How much oil would the 5S take?

Are there any fully synthetic 10w-40 on the market?

Where can I find them and how much am I looking at?

There sure are, head to you local Autobarn, Supercheap Auto or Repco for ranges and prices.

Thanks man,

would you run 10w-40 in a 1996 5S-FE that's done 160k kms?

I've found Penrite Everyday 10w-40 Fully Synthetic at supercheap... too bad they don't stock the Enviro+ / HPR or Performance variants..

Go to a different one - I've found HPR at SCA before heaps of times, it's not like it's Royal Purple or anything.

Likewise, I also ran SIN for about 12 months before building the engine I have now.

Here's a comparison of my engine vs a typically sludged 5S-FE. I put it down to good maintenance and running a good quality oil.

Thanks mate, I've only been looking at their online website. Will take a look physically if I have the time.

Does 10w-40 sound right for 160k km, Sydney weather?

Yes, it is fine.

Sydney's weather is no where near cold or hot enough to make any difference.

Dam, I can only hope the gizzards of mine aren't anywhere like that.. can't do anything to reverse the sludge if it's already forming

Yes, it is fine.

Thanks, missed your previous post !

Can I use Penrite HPR10 10w50 (Full Synthetic) for 5sfe engine?

any Pros and Cons?

I bought 99' Camry at last year. At the beginning there is no oil leakage,

but just after first service from local mechanic (he use Volvoline) oil start leaking from driver side.

Thus is why I'm thinking of 10w50.
