Hey guys we recently purchased a nice 2007 Presara with 100K on it...

i was on the highway and had just overtaken a few cars at a decent overtaking speed and upon coming back down some codes came up on the screen and I noticed smoke coming from the back.

Pulled over straight away and shut it down...under the bonnet was covered in trans fluid that seemed to be fairly high up in the system. Would have lost a fair amount judging by the mess but it only seems to happen under high pressure (overtaking...) and my partner said that she had smelt the smell before after overtaking...

Anyway towed it back to my mechanic mates and he said that it looks like it is coming out of the breather...anyway I have yet to get it diagnosed but I was wondering if anyone has heard of this happening??

Please let us know if this has happened to anyone to help with where we are to go from here as I DO NOT trust the auto specialist( for want of a better term) that is looking at it (don't have a choice in small town)...

I know that I will probably be up for a newy or a bench fix but fingers crossed that it can be resolved...

TIA :)

Josh.

You sure its from the transmission and not power steer fluid,. How can he say it looks like its out of the breather when all the engine bay is covered in the Sh*t.!!!!!!!!!!!

Easy check for your self the level of fluid in the power steering reservoir, even start the car and try turning the wheel left to right,

just my two bobs worth mate, to try and help ya out,

What codes came up?

Have you refilled the transmission and run the car at all?

It sounds like the fluid boiled, I dont know if thats possible but if you imagine that it was water, it boils then as bubbles form they push the liquid water out of the way..

So Trans was checked yesterday and it turns out that the transmission had been overfilled by over 3 to 4 litres of oil. So when under high pressure and temps it was coming out the breather.. No damage of note and all sweet! Massive relief..As I said we had only bought the car not long ago and of course you never know the history. This time we were very lucky. Toyota's sealed WS sealed oil system has its flaws..this could have been easily avoided with a dipstick....

cheers for responses guys!

Toyota sealed system is a superior system, as it's very hard to contaminate the system which means a longer service life. Even though you have to undo a gearbox mount to get the Trans sump off to replace the filter. ( the engineers should have added a cut out in the cross member )

This situation could have been easily avoided if your mechanic followed the procedure.

I'd be passing the costs on to the person that did the Trans oil. Your lucky it didn't blow the front seals out , then that's a gear box out job.
