2016 Aurion Pressara Sunroof rattle (tik tik noises)

Hi all hope someone would know this issue,

Got a very weird and annoying rattle around the sunroof area (tik tik noises). The weird part is that it does not happen all the time.

In the morning when it is usually cooler, the noise is quite loud then after driving for 15-20 mins the noise gets quieter and eventually disappears. It seems the noise happens when the sunroof is cold and when it heats up from the sun it disappears. It's very hard to demonstrate it to a sunroof specialist as by the time I get to the shop the noise disappears. I've also noticed when the noise is present by pushing up on the sunroof the noise disappears and as soon as you let go it come back. I have replaced the rubber seal that goes around the sunroof hoping that would fix the issue but unfortunately it hasn't.

Attached below is a YouTube video demonstrating the noise (may need to turn up the volume to hear).

This on a GSV50R Presara? My 1st thought was body flex, then something loose needing tightening, then after watching clip it's perhaps slack trim fit. Looks like answer might be in the removal of headliner to properly isolate noise & dampen it with packing. Have you taken it to a Toyota dealer ? Fair chance they've seen/heard this before.

That is an annoying rattle and unfortunately anything sunroof related is somewhat painful to deal with which is why I'd never have one.

Sounds to like an inner skin doesn't have enough sealant or glue causing this sound. If you are not willing to disassemble the roof to investigate it, then I'd really suggest taking it to someone who knows their way around these. I seriously doubt it's going to be a quick fix. You will need to disassemble it and inspect all the components carefully.

I'd begin with the roof liner first and go from there.

From the video, it looks like a 40 series.

I have this rattling noise issue as well, mine is 2015 aurion. I got it checked by 3 toyota dealerships, the third one finally identified it as coming from the sunroof/moonroof and will cost an eye watering $4k to fix, bulk of this charge is for labour, and they were kind to say i can get it fixed outside.

Any recommendations please?

I have given up on it, it is a expensive fix I must say

The noise you're hearing is where the outer metal skins folds over the inner skin and they rub together. Over time this will get worse as there is a somewhat hollow space between the fold and you'll get that "ticking noise"  All you have to do is place a shim inside the fold and it's sorted. I have heard that this has been a problem from Toyota since 2008 and ALL Toyota's are manufactured in the same way, including our locally made versions. ( When we used to make cars , that is)..

If you have the inclination, you'll need to remove the roof liner to be able to expose the innards and shim the fold. I'd even take the car for a drive with the roof lining out and have a passenger feel it out. You will find it pretty quickly.

If any of you do this DIY, please post it up here so others can benefit.

All the best Chaps

In addition to Tony's post, you could try using silicone grease or a rubber seal protectant and conditioner as per the following YouTube video. I also did a Google search so worthwhile looking at the various links to videos and articles before proceeding further.

Please also post an update.

Would you know any shop or anyone that can do this fix, I really like my sunroof would like to open up the shade sometimes during the cooler days but some days it is so noisy that I'm forced to close the shade and turn up the radio up.
