Custom CAI (ACT)

Custom intake my mate did on his 2zz celica here in Canberra. Dyno charts should come soon. 10kw extra atw tho. Did a custom front feed into the pod. Porcelin coated and metal polished heat shield done by him also.

isnt that a short ram intake? (SRI) <_< with a headshield.. and umm a pip running from front bar to the filter u say? i duno about 10fwkws but, probally. but stil when the car is running its guna be sucking in hot air from the engin once the hood is closed

He said something about heat dissapation with the fact that he coated the shield and pipe with porcelin (he's a metal fabricator). All I know his he did a dyno and it paid off. He said response wise it's excellent.

Probably similar to HPC coating? Reduces heat, increases performance etc.

that intake would have much better throttle response than the standard super-long intakes. If the guy has sucessfully sealed the pod off from the bay I'm sure that setup would make more power than the traditional "CAI"

These engines operate under vacuum, and the longer the tube, the harder it is for the vacuum to fill the intake ports.

That is a very good set-up. It is a copy of Rod Millen Intake for Celica.

Rod Millen is a rally/mountain pikes peak driver from New Zealand who lived in USA and open up his own tuning house specialising in Toyota and other makes. That heat shield effectively block heat from the engine bay, and because there is a intake hole in the celi's bumper, it gives it cool air directly from it.

8hp gain was recorded with this set-up, but loss of down low - which u will not feel anyway since u rev this engine high.

Looks good, but like Rollamods said, it'd be better with a sealed enclosure.

Maybe an opportunity to have a bonnet scoop that actually does something.

On celica, this is a very good short ram set up. I think the pod sits right in front of the radiator also, so the only need to block heat is at the rear of the filter - which is the case in that set up. Air charges in from the nose of the front bumper of the celica right to the pod, as the pod is located to the std intake snorkle position for the airbox.

On celica, this is a very good short ram set up. I think the pod sits right in front of the radiator also, so the only need to block heat is at the rear of the filter - which is the case in that set up. Air charges in from the nose of the front bumper of the celica right to the pod, as the pod is located to the std intake snorkle position for the airbox.

IMO - SRI is only going to be a good option of the intake is cool. I can't answer the question about exactly how hot it gets in an engine bay, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were looking at 100 odd degrees (Jason or Dan, can you clarify this for me please...

Therefore, to make the intake cool, you need to exclude it from the heat from the engine bay. The only way to do this is to either seal it off, in it's own enclosure then feed it from outside, ie a bonnet scoop, or extend the pipework to an area where the air is cooler, ala CAI style intake.

Extending the pipe then it ceases to be a SRI....

So, who's got the angle grinder :P

looks very similar to the injen as well, but there is only so many ways that you can make a SRI. Just looking at the pic the MAF sensor is very close to the intake manifold and there is also no straight section of pipe, wonder how this would be effecting the car....

I could understand MAYBE if the filter was behind the engine, but thats all fresh air flowing past that filter.

if the engine bay gets so hot, how would a top mount intercooler work on the rexxies? how can you expect it to cool anything sitting ontop of the "100 degree" engine? <_<

Because the top mounted intercooler on the WRX has a seal around it and is fed fresh air through the scoop...

Direct cool air into the I/C

Ok now im going to play devils advocate :ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:

You got dyno figures to prove that gain ...... wat type of dyno was it ..... did the figures read high for other cars that were tested ..... how many tests were done .... did it hit 10kw@w over several runs or just 1 freak run ....

Now im only making this post to prove a point ..... When others made claims they were flamed for not wanting to post sheets .... Now i hope everyone understands what its like to be on either side of the fence ....

Oh and BTW looks sweet .... you might need 2 look at how u sort this out for the rolla as i dont think we have the room to mount it like that in our cars .... could be wrong ....

You can't replicate that on corolla engine bay as our stock airbox is closer to the firewall, but on celica, its closer to the front.

Effectively that short ram is cold air intake, as 1) it is shielded from heat coming from the engine bay, 2) direct air ram by the bumper nose. 3) the heat shield makes the filter seperated and isolated from the enginebay.

As for the MAF, I think that's where it was in the standard airbox of celica anyway.
