Change Spark Plugs

Just asking if anyone could tell me how to change the spark plugs on the 1zz and if i need any special tools to do it

Remove the top engine cover by undoing the two 10mm bolts at the front and removing the two clips at the rear, be careful as they break very easily... Toyota always keep them in stock tho, and they're like $2 ea...

Once that cover is off, you'll have to undo the four 10mm bolts for the coil packs and then the two 10mm bolts for the wiring loom... Lift up wiring loom and take coil packs out of the spark plug tubes...

Now undo the spark plugs... You'll need a 5/8 Socket, preferably one designed for spark plus as they will have a rubber or magnet insert to pick up the plugs when they are loosened...

When they're all out, check they match the new ones by the thread and tips, and then put the new ones in...

When tightening, do them up to you feel it get tight and just nip it up, don't overtighten otherwise you will snap the plug and the head will have to be removed to drill it out...

Then refit the coil packs, wiring loom and engine cover...

Start the car, make sure everything is running sweet and you're done :) :) :) ...

Have a look in your toolkit that came with the car.

The plug spanner is in there !

Go and get yourself some NGK Iridium Plugs (about $15 each plug)

Part No. BKR5EIX-11

They are supposed to last 60,000 kms.

So you won't need to do it again for a few years

Standard Plugs are supposed to be replaced every 20,000 to 40,000kms.

i know someone that lost half a spark plug into his engine... so be careful.

I'd personally stick with the denso plugs from toyota, the platinum plugs are $10-14ea

for 1ZZ use K16R-U11, or IK16 if you HAVE to have iridium for the rice value

for 2ZZ use SK20R11, or IK20 if you HAVE to have iridium for the rice value

And if you're wondering upgrading to iridium doesn't do d!ck for fuel economy or smoothness. Save your money and stick to the standard ones.

Where do you buy platinums for $15? Most places I've checked want $20 each.

any toyota spare parts department. The last set I got were $10ea at trade price, the set before that were $13.70ea at retail price, from Oldmac Toyota at Springwood.

So whats the point of iridium sparkies then? Why do the Sportivo's come with them?
