  1. yeah i just got my system installed and i have the alternator whine... i ran the RCAs down the right and the power line down the left, but i mounted my amp so the lines had to cross... i unbolted my amp and flipped it over and plugged all the wires in and i STILL had the whining... so i dunno what to do... its only very quiet so i might get a noise suppressor... the point of this post was to ask - where have you all grounded your amps? if you have them in the boot that is... i unscrewed my thing that you tie your load down to and put my ground on that screw... previously i had it on the bolt holding that storage compartment next to the spare wheel... in both cases i had the whining -any other suggestions?
  2. i also fitted a new deck and splits the other day... firstly the head deck - mine also didnt fit too well when i tried to stick the vents back on.. i just used force and eventually it fitted... if its only a marginal difference just give it a push - the little metal bits that bolt into the dash are pretty flexible so it might work for you... the speakers were a good fit for me... i used the stock mounting positions. its a bit of a pain in the ***** that those black plastic things are actually the speaker... so i cut the cone out and sawed those plastic support things (no hope of putting the stock ones back in :P ) .. if your speakers dont fit, then they must have MASSIVE magnets or are just really deep... the crossovers - i mounted them in my dash... if you stick your head under the dash on the drivers side, there is a small ledge just above where your right leg would go (i dont DO technical names)... i just got double sided tape and whacked em on there... im not sure where my left one is (i didnt do it) but i found in the dash is a good place cos theres no chance of water getting into it and you can keep the wires hidden easily... ill look for my left one later. so thats my 2 cents - having an aftermarket stereo is so great if you do it properly... hope it works well for you :)

i think i have a fair way to go...
  4. i saw a really nice white corolla (pretty sure it was a stivo) with eyelids, carbon fibre looking sports grille and thats all i saw (from the front) ... it went past me on north rocks road yesterday at about 8.40am...
  5. lol dammit... the guy at the parts centre also said you should keep your stock head unit cos they charge like 1500-2000 bucks... for a STOCK piece of crap head unit...
  6. you guys who have put aftermarket head units in your car, how did you combat the fact that the stock head unit is far wider than any aftermarket head unit? i just bought the bracket things from toyota - which were a fricken rip off (see my other post)... its so stupid that they made the stock unit wider... surely there would be a number of people replacing their head units.
  7. i just want to know if anyone has had any situations with toyota spare parts where you've been charged an absolute fortune for something worth nothing... I am in the process of putting a new stereo into my car. I pulled my head unit out last night (following the great instructions on this site), and using a pocket i had already bought, tried to fit my new head unit in below my pocket... the problem is, the stock toyota stereo is about 1cm wider than a normal head unit, so i needed to buy some plastic spacers to go either side... THEY COST $17 FOR EACH SIDE!!! the pieces of plastic are probably worth about 50c, if that... and they are charging an absolute fortune. i called them to ask if they had it, assuming that the pocket and the side bits would be a single piece, but they werent, and now im stuck with 2 pockets and spacers, which is going to cost be something like 85 bucks... im 17 and i hardly earn any money.... has anyone else needed a part for their toyota and been charged way more than its worth? post here and let me know.
  8. is it possible to get a pocket for a single DIN head unit so that the head is on the bottom and there is a pocket at the top?
  9. that sounds really complicated for a simple task... but oh well good to see your problem has been solved.
  10. demon (yeah i just finished the book)
  11. im interested in a custom sub box for sure!! i have a 2x10 bass guitar speaker cabinet to fit in my car regularly and i still want a car sub- this box is the answer to my dreams!!! and also if it were possible to alter the design so the seats recline that would be better... also - wiring kits sound good... how much are they going to cost? cost of car audio ends up being such an expensive task if its done properly :(
  12. yeah im about to buy and install all my stereo bits and pieces... probably going to stick my amp under the seat and run my splits off it, but then im going to run a sub in the boot... so maybe i should put the amp in the boot... pros and cons of each place would be good from anyone who has an upgraded stereo :)
  13. yeah thats been done already - a few guys round here have them... azza has a huge one across his back window... others have them on their front bars...
  14. ooo... now you've gone and done it... you've hit a proud sportivo owner's sweet spot...
  15. thats really weird... cos i read the whole thread before posting again, and yet i still asked the question... good to see someone is on the ball... do you reckon it would work as well as in the corners of the windows? i imagine tweeters are highly directional, seeing as they produce the highest frequencies - so would it not sound as good facing up?
  16. how bout putting them in those vents in the dash which appear to point towards the side windows? is that a stupid idea cos its an air vent or would it work? - also do splits have to point towards you or can they be pointing up as they would in that vent... im new to all this, so bear with my stupid questions if thats not an option, how much do you guys reckon it would cost to get those plastic panels which your stock tweeters fit in? i was fiddling with my car and my plastic bits in the corner of the windows come off, so im assuming yours does too...
  17. i dont really have much experience with subwoofers, seeing as im doing my first install now, but im considering buying a 12" Rockford Fosgate P2 sub or a Kicker Solobaric - you know those crazy square ones... ive heard fantastic reviews on both of them.
  18. hey guys, im going to be buying a decent set of splits soon, to put in my ascent... but i dont have stock holes for my tweeters... just wondering where you guys with splits have your tweeters... i understand the sportivos come stock with tweeters - where are they located? any help would be apprecitated. blue_rolla
