Hey all,

So i've been having problems with my isp recently (TPG). Heres the story

Last tuesday (melbourne cup day) internet went down. no internet light on modem. So I wait for a while thinking it could be the heat affecting the line or something. A while later still not up so I decide to call TPG.

Called up TPG (after waiting 30 mins on hold) and they told me to do the basic troubleshooting that i had already done ie. reset modem, connect modem to main telephone outlet, use another modem etc. Said there was nothing wrong with their line. Fair enough. He said he'd do a line test and call me back on my mobile. Waited whole night and got no phone call back. TPG customer service works till late.

Next day called them back and they asked me to do the same troubleshooting again and the net still did not work and they said they will escalate this problem to the engineers and will get abck to us within 24-48 hours..... Thursday didn't have time to call them but the problem was not fixed. Friday came and they had not called me back. getting annoyed. Called them and they said they could not find a problem on their side. Oh and then asked me to do the same bloody troubleshooting again... Then had a go with them and spoke to their manager and they only decided that they would send a technician to our place to see what was wrong after me telling them that there was nothing wrong with our side for the past couple of days. The annoying thing was that they said they could not send someone out to us over the weekends cause their technicians don't work on weekends. The best they could do was lodge a job request on monday morning and a technician could be sendt to our place on monday hopefully.

So coped with not having the net over the weekend. Not too bad but was an inconvience as I have exams coming up and have you ever watched a movie and thought "hmmm I wonder what over movies he/she has been in. I know! i'll imdb them!" yes yes haha.

So monday comes along and haven't heard anything from TPG. So call them up in the morning and they said that they just put the job request in but they don't know when someone can come.... So talked to the manager made a huge fuss cause this is really unacceptable and got someone to come between 11-1 yay.

Technician comes asks us about our troubleshooting issues, what modem are u using? did your internet work before yadda yadda. Tests our line with his modem. Doesn't work surprise surprise. gets out his line testing equipment and tells us its not tpg's fault but telstra's and they have to lodge the results in with telstra and telstra will try to fix the issue "within the week"......... at this point my dad is really ****** and has a go with the technician (so embarassed -.-" the technican couldn't have been more than early 20's) but dad made the point that tpg was to call us immediately when they knew anything.

Later that night they call us saying that it wasn't our fault or tpg's fault but telstras fault for sure from the exchange or somewhere. So now we're still waiting for telstra to get back to us and fix the problem. Had to come into uni and use their internet.

So yeah thats my little rant. Have any of you guys experienced any problems with your isps?

ps sorry for bad grammar and typos. uni's firefox doesn't have any dictionaries installed to do the auto spellcheck

Wow, that's really ****ty. I'm with Optus in Melbourne and haven't experienced any problems in the last 12 months. My first broadband provider was Telstra, and I swear to god there was a period of about 6 months when the connection would have long outages nearly every single week, to the point where Telstra was giving everyone discounts almost every month.

I couldn't be happier that Telstra is getting chopped up. Broadband in Australia is barbaric. When I speak with international colleagues about their work here and overseas (I'm a scientist), it's really quite embarrassing how far behind we are.

I know what you mean. Just to add. Apparently I'm 4.5 kms from the exchange so i'm getting horrible speeds and frequent discunnections. But i'm living with that so don't care about that too much. TPG internet deals are so good but they can't handle the volume of ppl signing up.

Also my cousin who lives in HK has an unlimited internet plan and can download at speeds greater than 10Mb/s (megabytes). He downloads bluray dvd rips now instead of the normal 700mb dvd rips lol. How slow is australia. Tho we are advancing a bit. Mccas is now providing free wireless at least. Tho you go overseas anywhere and the mojority of the cities have had this service ages ago

That's pretty standard for TPG support. I had the dropout issues with the original tpg-supplied router, TPG blamed the router so I purchased their latest recommended router and had the same dropout issues. Turned out to be a line fault which could only be worked around by reducing the line speed down to around 1500kbs. Have been with TPG for 6 years now and have found the easiest way to get half-decent support is to PM one of their tech's on their own TPG support forum, or on the Whirlpool TPG support forum.

I've also got a Bigpond Cable connection which I've had since 1999, it's had 2 or 3 outages in 10 years, not too shabby but you pay the premium for it.

TPG is well known for their crappy customer services..

to cut a long story short...

friend ended up with no net for 2 months and he couldnt even use 56K because his ISP disconnected his LAN line as well

sounds familiar... blaming telstra!

IP: Telstra Bigpond

Cost: farking alot...

Problems: Bandwidth 25 gig u/d counted

Reason for joining: No alternatives available, live too far from the exchange & Telstra unwilling upgrade exchange or install new ones...

Pros: pretty quick speed...

Cons: its Telstra FFS!!! :P

Oh god telstra. I was with them on cable before adsl and boy was it a pain. I hate how they count upload as part of your download quota as well. really annoying. I guess one thing good with tpg is that they don't do that. I've been with tpg for like 5 years and I really have no bad things to say about them besides the random dropouts which are starting to get annoying. Other than that I'm happy with their plans and the speeds i'm getting are decent enough (about 500kb/s max)

Lol dial up. With the fibre optic i doubt there will be as many drop outs and I can tell from experience that its dam fast. However the cable itself is so dam fragile.

I was thinking of going to another isp like internode or iinet but none of their plans come remotely as good as tpg. =(

2 years with iiNet, only one major problem (wasn't there fault) otherwise effortless

running 12Mbit connection about 1800m cable length from the exchange.

Connected to a Engin One Hub (ST 790) - i work for them.

im with tpg too, rarely experienced this kind of problems. Lucky i guess.

But i have to admit that TPGs connect is not that great.

Abit off topic. Which uni do u go to Azz?

i've been with tpg for 5 - 6 years now (moved houses couple of times) i know that they are well known for their crappy customer service, but i've been very lucky with the service that i did not have to call them that often (prob 1 - 2 times over the last 6 years) so they are great...

Yeah I agree that TPG aren't bad as long as they don't have any problems lol. I reckon their customer care is quite good compared to others like say Optus.

D35 I go to UTS studying engineering. That makes me wonder. Anyone else go there?

Ps leaving uni now so that means no more replys from me till i get the net working at home or till i get into uni tomorrow

I guess you are be doing Telco Engg or Innovation?? Since it is UTS.

Edit: Is it true that UTS has the fastest internet in Sydney?

Lol fastest internet in Sydney? well firstly you have to know that UTS is its own isp. Secondly on a good day I downloaded 700 mb file in about 1-2 mins. (ubuntu 9.10) so yeah go figure =)

On topic. still haven't heard anything from telstra. They said they will be looking at the problem on monday....

So!!!!! Finally the internet has been restored.

Telstra came on monday and looked at our line. Went away for 1.5 hours, came back and said "its tpg's fault" and went away. So called up tpg and told them what telstra said and they said they will look into it. then today the internet came back! so it was tpgs fault in the end. Also the connection speed increased from 5000 kb/s to 6000kb/s so i'm happy with that
