I posted a topic a while ago about a noise coming from the bottom of the engine.

I've had a good mechanic look into it and he said his 99% sure its the Piston pins on cylinder 3 or 4.

His going to try to put new oil in and see if that quietens it down, if not im going to tell him to pull apart the engine and fix it because I've stopped driving the car it's annoying me that much.

Does anyone know roughly how much it'l cost to have the sump pulled and the pins changed?

will be cheaper to get another engine.

The piston pins wont wear, they're a harder material than the pistons themselves. It's a sump and head-off excercise to replace the pins, which I'd be VERY suprised if the actual pins are the cause. Pins are supplied with new pistons, fairly sure you can't order the pins by themself.

The engine has 70,000km on it it's not high enough for me to consider replacing yet, I haven't priced new engines but I've heard there pretty expensive.

If its more then $1500 to fix then I'll trade the car in, I drive it maybe once a week because I can't stand the noise.

I've had 3 mechanics tell me it sounds like the pins, maybe theres a seal around them thats gone? One of the mechanics said it's very common on Fords and they'l do 300,000km without it causing an issue.

Ok, his just had a further look into it.

Put Mobile 10-40 in and its quietened down a little.

He said it could also be a bearing.

About a month after I purchased the car I thought the oil looked a little low so I topped it up, so it might have fkd the bearing =(

the rods have a bronze bush at the small-end that the piston pin goes through, running low on oil is more likely to cause damage to the big end bearings, not the piston pin bush.

To replace the bush in the rod, the engine needs to be pulled down, so new headgasket, seals, head bolts, bushes, rings, machining & labour would easily come to over $1500.

Im waiting on him to give me a rough price.

Well I guess the Sportivo will be up for sale in the next few weeks.

Pistons can only be put in from above on the zz.

Excuse the noobness but would that mean more or less labour?

more labour and more parts, as per my previous post.

Damn, well I'll be picking the car up tomorrow and working something out with the mechanic.

He said the noise has quietened down so I'll see if it still annoys me. If not it'l be sold and I'll buy a Honda. I've got a good mate who's just become a fully qualified mechanic so might see if his interested in ripping it down in his garage and rebuilding it.

being brutally honest given the amount of work that would need to be done you might as well put a bit more investment in and rather than just fixing it to be a stock setup grab the performance parts and put them in there ...... also if u r gonna sell it then if u have a conscience you would adjust the price accordingly because i personally would hunt you down if i found out u had sold me a dud ..... so do the right thing.

hey, just wondering, just changed my drive belt day before yesterday and i think the noise is gone... have u tried checking your drive belt if it is worn out? i dont think mine has been changed since it came out of factory but it sure had lots of cracks and wear in between the rubber...

Xoom, It wouldnt be selling a 'dud' you can hear the noise at idle and it would be disclosed to any buyer and im sorry if you buy a private second hand car and dont have it inspected then its your own fault.

It doesn't matter what it is now, im replacing the engine. Its turned out to be $800 for an engine with 30,000km the donor car had logbooks, odomoter working and engine running. It was rear ended.

$400 to put it in so $1200 and its fixed

Can anyone help out on what I need to do about changing the engine # with the RTA? also do I need to have it engineeered?

Yes $800 bargain!!

Im going down saturday morning to talk to him so im going to make sure his talking about a 2ZZ not a 1ZZ.

The person who referred me to him said his brother owns a wreckers and can pull most of the parts from there. Im talking supply & fit alternator for a Honda Civic $120 and the alternator lasted 4 years until he sold the car.
