I picked up a Celica SX '96, manual.

It runs beautiful, however when I select 3rd gear and take my hand off the gearstick BEFORE releasing clutch/accelerating, the gear will slip back into neutral.

But when I press gearstick in 3rd gear for a moment UNTIL I fully released clutch/accelerated, then I can take my hand off the gearstick and it stays in gear nicely.

This only happens in 3rd gear.

What could be the issue? It does not really bother me while I am driving. I am just wondering if this is a sign of some major problems($$$) coming up later. I was planning to get it roadworthy and register it, but if it would need a new gearbox in the near future, it may not be worth it...

I might need to add, the gear slips out from the force of the acceleration.

From experience I would say that there is a problem with the Gearbox, two options are to 1) take it to a gearbox specialist (probably the best option but not the Cheapest) 2) Go to a Wrecker and pick one up, they will always want to exchange it with what you have. You will need to take it to your trusty Mechanic to do the swap. Make sure its swapped properly, as the gearbox seals could already be damaged and the swap could cause it to leak, so you might as well get the seals changed as well. I would go for option 1) they can never give you a Quote straight up as they can never tell exactly whats worng until they open it up. Worse case scenario, this could cost you just over $1000

I definitely think the problem is with ur tyre pressures

Hi there, how does tyre preasure cause this? And only on 3rd gear, just curious.. Thanks

baaahahahaha... the same way as your wiper blades being worn might cause the head gasket to blow.

My second car ( hilman hunter 35 years ago) had this problem and I just drove it for years without using 3rd gear.Eventually a friend gave me a gearbox from their crashed car and I spent the weekend replacing it.The car went for a few more years and I sold it to another friend who totalled it in a head on crash.

Maybe you can find a mechanic that can verify it is the gearbox.NRMA breakdown service have verified car faults for me.

What is the NRMA equivalent in QLD. :)

It will probably have something to do with your exhaust bearing.
