Got rid of the mufflers on my TRD.... Sounds great.... I swear I have more power... and my highway fuel consumption went from 8.3 to 7.4 litres per 100k.... Why didnt I do this before?

Video on YouTube... search TRD Aurion Mufflers deleted... I would upload it but my PC has a virus, and work PC blocks YouTube

Exactly mate..i wanted to mention the fuel economy gain too. I got the similar gain after deleting the mufflers and it sounds awesome plus the acceleration gain is good too. SImply loving it :)

This is uploaded in Facebook so I am not sure if you guys can view it. GIving it a try.

In my opinion, I'd be quite surprised if you really did in fact get a lasting fuel economy gain just by the rear mufflers alone. There is quite a lot that can vary the fuel consumption of these cars and I doubt that the rear mufflers (and even the middle resonator for that matter) would make an actual difference. Note I said lasting because the ECU tends to notice changes like that, but it's the ECU doing stuff in the background temporarily that give that impression something is happening. I can't explain that one but I've seen it happen on two occasions after visiting an exhaust shop.

Also, more power and better fuel economy don't exactly go together unless you are making your engine burn fuel more efficiently... which there isn't much room to do so for a modern engine like this.

not technically correct. By allowing the engine to breath with less restriction, you get less reversion into the cylinders, better scavenging, and slightly leaner AFR's as a result.

When i put tubular headers on my subaru with no other changes, i had to richen the fuel mix right across the map as it went on average a whole afr point leaner.

Ive no doubt there will be an economy gain, its common with most cars to gain economy, and you may see a slight power/torque gain from the leaner mix, but id imagine its largely a placebo from having a loud exhaust and thinking its faster because it sounbds faster. back to back testing would prove or disprove this, im sure the poster in question could easily do so with a g-tech.

Personally, i really dislike the sound of the muffler replacement pipes, theres no depth to the note and its 'raspy' and makes me think of early vn commodores with bogan special exhausts. A decent system with jdm mufflers might sound ok, but its still an auto, and sounds like an attempt to make people think you have a faster car, when in reality, it wont add anything in terms of real performance without a decent ecu remap.. For me, id rather leave the exhaust alone, and work on getting rid of the resonators in the intake, these engines sound great through induction note only, and it keeps it sounding sedate when not sinking the boot in..

I dont mean to be a killjoy lads, but after owning a 11 second car, the Aurion is a slug, and not really worth spending money on performance mods in my mind.. (but its my opinion, and not meant to denigrate others choice of spending their hard earned..)

Shadow: Are you saying that you have stock mufflers with the centre resonator deleted?

RE the more power and better economy, I would have to say the economy is relatively unchanged and would agree with DJOKR. The factory managment is quite smart, and will adjust fueling, timing to compensate for the slight flow increase.

CRUISEH, I cant see there being much scavenging on factory manifolds pumping straight into a CAT then going through the restrictive Y piece. On your subaru im asuming you had tuned length headers installed which are excellent at scavenging, which your standalone aftermarket ECU could not compensate for ( im assuming thats what you were running).

I would think the same would apply for power. Slight increase but as CRUISEH said placebo as the car now sounds faster it feels faster.

I to have come from an 11sec car (cressida) and think the aurion does alright, gets up and boogies, sounds alright (now) but still uses under 10l/100ks and the mrs can drive confidently to work and back.

I say modify your cars as you see fit otherwise the roads will be full of prius's!!

Well I am just half way with my full tank of fuel ever since the muffler delete job and finding that I have done more KMS on the odometer (reset at every fill). I will finish this tank and then see how much I have gained. Regardless to the ECU or whatever sensor that tells me anything, the odometer is telling me I am atleast 50kms ahead at the moment. But I will wait till the end of the tank to see how many kms I do and then make sure I have gained or not.

I agree with you guys that the ECU on these cars will adjust to most modifications and I have seen that happen. But it doesnt bother me as I am not expecting it to be a drag machine.

I will record a video where I am driving in triptonic mode to show some of you manual drivers how good I can make this car sound like for an auto. (with the accelerator pedal release on shift method for manual like sound) :)

And perfomance wise the car has more flow at the low end acceleration which I seem to find good. And I am not comparing this car to any of your modified drag machines.

End of the day we do what makes us happy. I am not saying the Aurion is a serious sports car, but I find it a great daily ride that gives me ample performance and does get me to places without issues. :)

Amen.

Hence selling the subaru, and buying the Aurion :)

Its a great machine, and IMHO better than the commodore or falcon equivalent.

see my íts me'thread for details on the sube. I built the engine, forged EJ25, Tuned the ECU (haltech E8) and well, there aint a nut or bolt untouched in the old gal.. but its a youngsters game. My next mod project will be a dedicated hillclimber..

Darryl.... You and the others can't rain on my parade. Even if they are dilusions of grandeur, it's tough to argue with cruise control on the same 100k trip every Monday.

As for power.... eh... let me dream. I couldn't care less about an 11 sec car at this point in my life. Stage 2 Turbonetics fitted 2JZ Lex IS 300 left behind in the US did me just fine.

Happy with the bad A$$ saloon I have now. Hoping to get in the "12"s eventually. Happily spending copious amounts of money doing what I love in the meantime....

Wish i had taken that many photos of my old cars. Hillclimber sounds interesting got a thread on that?

GDUBB: Sorry dude didnt mean to put you down. We are all in the same boat as car enthusiasts. Im sure we have all spent too much money on cars and we will all keep on doing so!!

not yet. doingh house renovations this year, then ill look for a shell.

Idea is, MK1 Escort (i have a thing for them, was founding president of ACT small ford club in 2000) with floor cut out, 3/4 chassis and cage, and mid mounted sube engine with transaxle pushing 350 or so hp. should be cheap to build, and fun to drive :) that my idea anyway..

ive (luckily) got access to full workshop and loads of equipment, my best friend runs his ownb workshop and builds rallycars (www.techworkz.com.au) so we will have a crack at a hillclimber for **** n giggles :)

bvut i digress.. back on the exhaust system ideas, wouldnt a pair of 3"resonators work well, still straight through, but would take the rasp away and be nice and deep sounding??

Sounds like a Hoot!! and good selection of car. MK1's haul with a cosworth twin-cam or SR in the front so should go good.

But back on topic (sorry guys)

That is next trial, a couple of resonators where the mufflers were to take a bit of the bark out. Its the car the mrs takes to work so have to work round her but it will get done.

Will let you guys know how it goes.

Like the idea of the resonators guys...I think I am so used to the sound at the moment and if it gets a bit too quiet I will be not happy..but taming this sound a bit is always good if possible..keep those ideas coming guys :)

I am going to do this mod next year to mine, I was just wondering, are the vids that are on here so we can hear the sound, are the cars in them supercharged models or naturally aspirated. Just need a comparison cause mine is not supercharged, I imagine the note would be different from a supercharged car. I like the idea of leaving the resonator and deleting the mufflers and straight through pipes, not sure wether to stay with 2" or go to 2.5". I noticed some have listed they have deleted the resonator and changed the muffler. I like the sound of blue Aurion that Vijith555 posted and was wondering what the proper specs are on the mod, that is the sound I am after.

The video I posted of my car is pretty much the same setup as the Blue Aurion video I posted earlier. My car is not the supercharged version. I have deleted the rear mufflers and gone with 2.5" pipes at the end nothing else. These vides wont show you the sound you get from inside the car though. Will try to make one or find one.

Thanks Vijjith555, might pay a visit to my local muffler shop for a quote, yours sounds good, nice purr at idle and has that high performer tiger like growl when reving.

Thats the best thing to do. It will be cheaper than putting sports mufflers on. Yeah I just love the growl and I missed that a lot earlier to this. A point to note is that the car interior is not going to be as quiet as when it is on stock mufflers though. Gear shifts that occur around 2000 rpm generate a strong hum inside but rest of the time its quiet..But if you are after this sound you wont mind it at all :) Also if you do go for this, make sure you keep your stock mufflers with u so if one day you want to go back its easy :)

i just unbloted one of the rear muflers, perfect note. but the only thing i dont like about these cars having a bit of note is the crap auto changes. sorry to say but i have driven a lot of cars from euro to aussie, and the autos in these are quite poor... i think i might bolt it back up!!!

oh well they cant be perfect,

Is there a problem with too much sound on the inside? I did something similar with 1 3/4 pipes with 6 inch length resonators and the drone was bad. just wondering if theres more sound on the outside rather than inside. Another point, has anyone tried to fabricate a single system, or a full twin system? Edited by SCOOTA44

There isnt to much noise inside actually. I have taken videos of the car being driven past me and it sounds loud and nice outside. It is definitely louder outside than inside. U do get a drone when it shifts between 3-4 or 4-5..but thats actually something you get for having a good growl..dropping down the exhaust and listening to it on idle really dont give u that nice sound u get when u are driving it. There is a nice rumble to it when u listen to it driven by which I like. about the full system I have no idea if anyone has done it so far mate.

I know this is a stupid question to ask now but I was wondering how much of the warranty do I void when i take the rears off on these cars? Is it like the full engine warranty or just the exhaust system? Or none of the above?

the first thing i did for my aurion is take off the 2x stock muffler bolt on 2x hi tech hi-flow light weight muffler $720 good sound but not loud enough ok next step removed resonator $50 sound pretty same, ok next step removed cat then straight pipe $100 LOL epic loud i swear to god just like driving a Jet on the road screaming at gear 1 to 3 around 3.5 to 4000 rpms people is looking at me when i drive in city i was like what the hell you looking at then i got scared because of the nose/ defect by cops mwhahah then i bought hi-tech Hi-flow cat $300 bolt it on it reduce about 30-35% of no cat sound im happy with it now no need to worry about the defect.

I asked toyota what putting in an Oil Pressure gauge would do to my warranty and they told me cause it is a non-genuine part the whole oil system, gaskets and all would be void even if the problem was nowhere near or related to the gauge's sender. Tnat sucks.
