Aurion Sportivo Concept

Hi guys, i've had a discussion today with my father about cancelling my corolla sportivo order as he prefers me to wait 6-12 months and buy the new supercharged aurion sportivo. They say it will be minimum 250kw's. But i got one question to ask. I have heard that toyota was not happy with their performance brand sportivo being front wheel drive and ive heard rumours that it will possibly be rear wheel drive, which i am totally looking forward to hear. What do you guys think? It will be rear wheel drive yes? because if its going to be challenging with ford and holden performance vehicles and being powered by supercharged 3.5 litre v6, it would have to be rear wheel drive.

This is kinda off topic but where is your dealer plucking a new sportivo from?

You say you have 6-8 weeks or so left to wait. Where are they going to get one from by then?

Did they decide to bring in one more batch or something???

a little more on topic, for some more "real" photo's of this new car in toyota's lineup, just take a look at the Lexus ES350...

ewrrrr... FWD 6-speed auto.

Toyota Aus's site is here where they do a good job of not letting anyone know it is FWD:

is it definately going to be FWD??, coz if they went to effort to make it RWD it would sell better without a doubt!! Whats the point in designing it for aussies then make it FWD??? Swing and a miss big time!!!!! Does'nt make sense to me

If it were RWD they could then compete in V8 supercars, which would be great to see.

Looks chunky tho

It will definetely be FWD. Anything else would be an extensive/expensive redevelopment of the platform.

After seeing the car in person, it looks good, but still a bit too slab sided for my liking, I hope the soon to be released new Camry is a little better.

the lexus ES350 (same car, just with a lexus badge instead of toyota...) is confirmed to be a FWD.

Ive read an issue about the new aurion models. They are saying that the normal aurion is going to be definately front wheel drive but for the s-con sportivo they are thinking of awd or rwd because 250kws is a lot of power for a front wheel drive to handle so yeh. By the way, my dad said that he could easily cancel the order if i wanted to. So im still thinking if i should cancel order and wait for sportivo aurion.

No idea where the car is getting shipped from. I'll ask. Its only been 2 weeks since we gave order.

Well I think if they try and tell you its currently on the boat coming direct from the factory then they are pulling your leg. It has to be in the country somewhere already. So i'm just wondering why its going to take so long to truck it in regardless of where in Oz it might currently be.

I realise that none of this should matter to me but I absolutley hate car dealers trying to pull the wool over the customers eyes, if thats what they're trying to do.

I don't know what takes them so long to get the car down here but i only gave the order 2 weeks before. It won't arrive here till 1.5 or 2 months. By the way i got my dad to cancel the order already and it's done. They didn't start any problems at all. They are going to make me know when to take orders for sportivo aurion so, thats what i am waiting for at the moment. All i know right now is that, the yellow looks good, possibilty of awd or rwd system for sportivo, 6 speed manual and over 250kws of power and over 400nm. Hopefully it will turn out the way i want it. Standard aurion i heard will be starting from 35,000 dollars and the sportivo would probably be around 50 or a bit more.

you are putting alot of faith in toyota to deliver a car that they just wont be able to make, as well its toyota and they suck at most things sporty

Won't be able to make? Man the car has been made, tested and its already ready. I trust my dad's words because he's been with toyota for the last 5 years and everything he has told me has turned out correct. The supercharged 3.5 v6 for the sportivo aurion has already been designed and tested. But they have still not revealed the true power figures, transmission details and either the car would be rwd or awd. He has already seen the new bumper bars for the basic aurion and he told me they werent different from the one's seen in the melbourne motor show. We'll wait and see.

The ES350 is a little misleading. While the Aurion has some Lexus design cues, it is in fact based on the upcoming Camry, with new panels forward of the A pillar and rearward of the C pillar ... if you have a look at the side view of the ES350, you'll see the top curve of the rear door is more "fastback" than the more upright Camry/Aurion equivalent, and ES has deeper doors and shallower windows, where the equivalent parts on the local cars are a bit more in proportion.

Having said that, though, I'm going to guess that Toyota will have an AWD system for the s/c Aurion, along the lines of the system they put together for the X-Runner ute a few years ago. RWD would be good, but I think AWD grip will really allow the car to take on the hot Holdens and Fords.

I'm also going to guess that a Moderator will soon move this topic elsewhere ;)

I think thats a fair call, if you refer to Toyota Australia that is. If you mean toyota worldwide, then you have been playing too much GT4 :). You gotta remember that Toyota Australia will also want to look after itself hence it is killing alot of the sporty stuff available in other countries.

I think sportivo aurion will give a new start for toyota to prove themselves that they can build a fast sedan that suits australian's. As for the name, Sportivo does sound like "sporti" or "sporty" but when the aurion sportivo comes out, you can't really call that just sporty as it will have +250kw's under the hood. I would like to see the sportivo name changed to sport as it will be way more persuasive and direct. Im guessing that the sportivo aurion s/c would be awd as well as the body structure really looks like it suits an awd system perfectly. AWD + s/c 3.5 v6, then we got some real performance figures. Im feeling like i did a right move by cancelling corolla sportivo order and waiting to order the s/c sportivo aurion.

It *looks like* it suits AWD perfectly? What sort of poor foundation is that for your conclusions that it is sure to be AWD? As much as i am sure your old man has been with Toyota for eons, i still think it is a little naive to cancel your Stivo order (probably one of the few left in Aus) to wait 6-12 months for a car that may or may not be FWD (would be a tragity if it is, although i wouldnt be suprised) and could more than likely cost double the price of a Sportivo. Also, did you not say in a previous thread that you are only 18? Would a supercharged vehicle not be illegal for you to drive?

I think you are basing your conclusions on somewhat insubstantial information, the only REAL evidence you have is Toyota's word that it will rival the XR6 Turbo as Australia's choice performance vehicle and as Northy said, judging by Toyota's performance vehicle track record, they have quite the challenge ahead...

When i said "it looks like", i meant that the car is also suitable with awd system as the designers also said the same thing and they said that its possible to bring it out with a awd system. Have you heard these news about the sportivo aurion? If no, why brag about a comment that i make? If you were a designer and decided to put a supercharged v6 under the hood and push over 250kw's, would you put it in a front wheeled car? Yes, the normal aurion is going to be front wheel drive like the rest of the cars of toyota but, sportivo is going to be different because of the power band. And yes i am aware that the sportivo aurion will cost twice the price of a sportivo. Like i said before, if you read closely to my comments you will see that, i said that the basic aurion is going to start from 35,000 dollars est. (more than a sportivo corolla) and sportivo would probably push 50g's or even more. I don't care if im underage for a supercharged vehicle. I was infact buying a 97 Skyline GTR instead of giving order for the sportivo corolla, but i decided to let it go when i saw the odometer of the car. There's lots of p platers with 5.7L monaro's. And i still see them on the road. As long as u dont do anything stupid and not get attention, it's ok. Speaking of the performance of it and rivals, 250kw+ 3.5L supercharged v6 with 6 speed manual, awd system and some more less weight compared to the other australian performance car rivals, sounds like that it will already be ahead of the cars like xr6 turbo and commodore ss. We will wait and see.

The designers only have so much say in what we actually see on the road ... if the bean counters think it'll all cost too much, then they'll force FWD on the designers.

As for weight, I wouldn't expect the Aurion to be much lighter than the Falcon, if at all, especially if its AWD ... but it shouldn't be as podgy as the VE Commodore which is expected to be up to 200kg (!) heavier than VZ.

And being 18 and apparently comfortably able to afford a $50K+ performance car, you're obviously not a trainee, apprentice or student! :P

Well lets see...firstly, i was the first to reveal the name of the Aurion in a week old thread, at which time, i already knew what you learned 5 minutes ago. Also, throughout my previous post i was referring exclusively to the Aurion Sportivo, not the baseline Aurion, that is not the vehicle in question.

There is no way of knowing whether toyota Australia will opt for a different wheel drive just because the Sportivo is pushing more power, as previous posts have told, so long as it suits costs Toyota won't really care if it will not get the power down.

Cops must also be pretty soft down in Victoria, because you get raped in my neck of the woods if you are a P plater with an F/I vehicle. Also, what is the point of having a performance vehicle if you cant give it some stick on a regular basis? All i can say is that you are making some pretty confident assumptions...

Lucky for you that it is probably Daddy paying for it...
