100 series Alternator failure

Hi guys,

I have a 1998 Landcruiser 100 series petrol FZJ105R - 1FZFE and I think the alternator has **** its self.

On the dash instruments I am seeing the battery light, plus the handbrake light and the air filter light all on. They came on together at the same time. When I disconnect the battery when started, the engine stops immediately. The charge on the battery terminal is 12.3 volts at idle and 12.7 volts when revved up.  Is it normal for the hand brake and air filter light to come at the same time as the battery alternator light on the dash or do i have other issues going on ? Regards, Mark

No definite answer.

Have a look at the replies to this post which might give you a few clues. Definitely worthwhile checking out the earth cable connections.

Ok thanks. I got a loose quote from MYCAR to have them replace the alternator and twin belts $625 with labor included. I can buy an Denso alternator for $238 from SuperCheap Auto and belts for $30 each but I'm not good with spanners. My contribution to our economy.

Should be pretty easy to do with that straight 6 and all that space in the engine bay. Did you have the alternator checked by someone qualified ?

What you describe points to a bad alternator but I don't understand why your handbrake and filter light comes on too. Probably part of a fault sequence the ECU puts out most likely.
