you CAN do it without spring compressors, but i wouldnt recommend it at all. there's a good chance you'll kill yourself...

you can shoot the springs out to a thick blanket against a solid wall if you know what you are doing when you release the top bolt and stand on top of the strut to steady it. but no idea how you would install/compress the new spring into place unless it was very short.

you can use the weight of the car to compress with the strut tops nicely secured in place at the top and a trolly jack below the hub at the bottom (while the car is on stands). Mre difficult to do for the rear, but can be done with a couple of hefty blokes leaving onto the strut tops and someone else to secure the retaining bolt.
