1. Hi Guys I figure this happens often enough to dedicate a discussion thread to it. How many people have had their cars damaged at parking lots by careless people opening their doors into your beautiful paint? I've got this massive scratch on the passanger side rear door from some nit-wit who opened his door into my car. judging from the depth and severity of the scratch it must have been a hard bump. Bloody sh*theads. I'm not happy! If i had seen the scratch at the time i was leaving and i was sure it was the guy next to me, i would have keyed the guys car just for the satisfaction!
2. That sprung rod in the middle is for structural support of the rear cross beam. It is there to stop the rear beam from collapsing in on itself. I don't thing replacing it will do any good. All the load from the body roll is transferred to the join between the trailing arm and the crossbeam. They are welded together to give a sway-bar-like effect. There is no sway bar. the rear suspension assembly IS the swaybar. They have the same setup on the Pulsar.
3. Hehehe. if by "rear swaybar" you mean "no swaybar" I just realised that it is a torsional beam rear suspension setup meaning there is no rear swaybar. The rear axle IS the rear swaybar. The rear cross-beam consist of a folded piece of sheet metal with a structural support rod flexed into the middle. oh well. I would have preferred some form or independent rear suspension on the rolla. It would be more tunable. That's why i still love my old Celica :( Cheers guys!
4. I've read that if your rear sway bars are too stiff that you will shift too much load to the outside rears which can cause you to lose the rear end during hard cornering. plus i dont' mind rear body roll, it's the front roll that really annoys me.
5. Like most people on this forum, the only real problem i've had is the break squel in reverse under light braking. It's just a annoying and embarrasing sometimes but nothing major. I haven't had any of the problems others seem to have though (Knock on wood :D )
6. Hi guys. I used to post reqularly on a Toyota Celica forum (www.toyotacelicaonline.com) They are located in USA and Canada and so as one of their Australian members, i contacted Whiteline on their behalf. The guy at whiteline seemed to indicate they would be willing to offer up to 10% discount for bulk buys for car clubs and their affiliates as long as it doesn't undercut their distributors. This was about a year ago so we will probably have to contact them again. The point it that they are willing to offer discounts for bulk purchases. I just thought i'd let you guys know.
7. Sweet rides guys! nice wheel choice. they really compliment the car colour. I've got a silver one and was thinking of titanium coloured rims. =)
8. is the warranty still intact we service the car ourselves?
9. Chill Dudes. each-and-their-own remember? I honestly think we are arguing over nothing. Toyota have always been ontop of their game in well "performing" engines. A well performing engine comes down to it's durability and effeciency. Sure we will not run the 1/4mile in sub 9's and we will not beat many cars of the same spec in stock form but there is tuning potential. I dissagree with the comment about toyota engines not being ontop of tecnology. The idea of Variables in engine management is not a new concept to Toyota. They offered a variable intake runner system called T-VIS in their 3S series engines since mid 80's. I admit that the 4a-ge and 4a-gze were excellent engines but since then there have been the mighty 2JZ and 3S-GTE engines. The only thing Toyota are guilty of is Crappy marketing! my 2 cents.
10. Respect! :D I know what you mean about 10+ year old toyotas. My old car is a 89 celica and i've pretty much figured how to fix it by trial and error. i've changed oil gaskets, distributor, clutch slave cylinder, suspension bushings, front hub, knuckle and bearings. Most of the info you need is in books and on the internet anway. What times do you get on the drag strip with that thing? how much does frankenstein weight with all trim taken out? ;)
11. Opps...i meant to say 89 Camry. you can call me the "dislexic typist" :D
12. Just cut off your left arm and part of our right foot and I'm sure toyota will happily trade you for it :P they wanted to charge me $500 for a left front wheel hub for an 89celica while the same hub for an 89camera is only $180. wow!
13. i think there might be a sensor so the window knows when it's fully up or down. It's not just the switch. (at least i don't think so) :D
14. Yeah, sounds like the stupid situation i was in yesterday what is it with me and downhill turns. You may have read the post about the time i had "plow-understeer". :( I've read reviews that say our stivos have brakes and engines that are way to powerfull for the chassis. I think the overall package is pretty good. the only let down is the suspension but for almost 10k less than Astra turbo and oodles cheaper than a Civic Type-R, i can't complain at all :P
15. Just wondering what electronic brake force distribution does. I was on my way home from work yesterday in the backstreets of Chester hill. there is this stree that comes just over a bridge that you are not suppose to turn right into...since it's the only way home from that area that doesn't require me to go through the main streets, i always turn there. anyway, i apply the brakes to turn right and all of a sudden i feel the brakes having no affect, so i push harder on the brakes and try to rate the wheel a little more to make the turn. then the ABS starts fighting me. It never felt dangerous but sudden brake response took me by surprise. I think maybe the ABS was confused or something When i first applied the brakes they didn't grab like they usually do and then ABS kicked it. Weird! <_<
16. On the first week of owning the car i realised the stock suspension setup was inadequate for anything but "drop your kids to school" driving. I can't remember who it was that put the tower brace but i'm wondering if it makes a difference. Has anyone tried thicker swaybars at the front. I've been told that it's not a good idea to put too thick a sway bars on a car that has minimal weight balance to the rear as you will get oversteer.
17. I'm all for it. it'll be good to know where most of the stivos are in Australia. :D
18. I'm thinking that too. The engine misfires to control rpm at cutout right? what happens if you downshift just below cutout? won't that put you way past redline? will the synchros give you a hard time at that rpm for downshifting?
19. No oil change on mine. All that was done was a wheel alignment and resurfacing the brakes to get rid of the brake noise while in reverse (noise was still there when i got the car back) I'm sure the filter picks up anything major in the oil. if you are concerned, do the 5000km service. it is not necessary but if you are concerned you should consider it.
20. Sounds like a prestigously over-powered go card :D I just found a site online that desribes the old (squre lights) JDM integra type-R weighing only 1060kg doing 0-100km/h in 5.9sec. I really wish we had more torque down low. 2000cc capacity would have been really nice. :(
21. What's the coolest Rolla you've seen lately? I saw this late model levin in black with an awsome body kit and aftermarket rims. The front bar puts the sportivo to shame. the whole car looke really really nice. Saw another silver sportivo in Parramatta over the weekend and i just looked at him and gave hime a dopey smile :D .
22. oops. didn't realise html wasn't supported in the post body.
23. American and Canadian Celica club that i used to frequent. www.toyotacelicaonline.com
