  1. Just to add further credence to the "it's highly illegal, don't bother" argument, these are the fines in NSW in regards to radar detectors (info is a year old but I doubt it has changed much) $1556 for owning, buying or selling a "speed evasion device" aka radar detector $1556 + 9 demerit points for using a "speed evasion device", plus confiscation of the unit $1556 if you fail to surrender the device. So in total, you could be up for ~$4700 worth of fines + 9 demerit points, which is the same as being caught doing 45km/h+ over the limit in a school zone TWICE (as far as fine is concerned), or getting caught 10-20km/h over THREE TIMES (for demerit points). Factor in the cost of the unit itself, and just how much of a speed demon are you that owning one makes financial sense? And just because they are supposedly undetectable, doesn't mean their use can't be detected (based off sudden braking etc) and they can't be found if you're pulled over... I'll freely admit that I'm not the world's slowest driver, and I do not always obey the limits (but still don't drive like an idiot), and I have only had 2 speeding tickets in my 10 year driving life, both for <15km/h over the limit - once in a zone where everyone was doing the same speed going up a hill from a 60 to an 80 zone, and once in a 60 zone that used to be 70 after a long frustrating day at work 2 blocks from home. Not once have I even considered getting a radar detector, because the cost outweighs the benefits many times over
  2. They use the 6-speed box out of an Avensis diesel, and it isn't regarded as one of the best features of the car...
  3. In case you didn't already know, radar/lidar detectors are illegal in NSW, and you're opening yourself up to a world of hurt if you buy and fit one.
  4. In the news yesterday Volkswagen recalls 2.6 million cars for DSG, electric and fuel faults Food for thought...
  5. Yeah, they even released a limited edition G6R to celebrate the WRC wins....and what better way to celebrate a world-championship winning race car than to bolt a 6-speed gearbox to a standard 4AFE... That blue one does look awesome though, even better than the AE101 FXGTs (and I love my 101 FXGTs)
  6. Hey Duy, more proof that Corollas and Civics are one and the same :P AE111 Corolla G6 EP3 Civic
  7. Got a few things going on in December (apart from Christmas of course) so it would either need to be early Dec or late November
  8. Umm, unless you're using the "sports shift" manual shift there IS no "first gear" in a CVT auto....
  9. Wish they offered some more black-on-white styles, black background just doesn't suit most white cars...
  10. It's not a steak, it is a time-share in a cow.
  11. I've got a pod filter in a similar location in the AE102 and I've never had any dramas with water etc, and I've had it on for a good 100,000km. Just don't be an idiot driving through lakes and you'll be fine. Everyone gets really antsy about low-mounted pod filters but at the end of the day you'd have to completely submerge the filter before you started sucking up any meaningful amount of water which would be a level probably halfway up your front bumper, at which point water would be coming in your doors....
  12. Nice finish, I've got a spare set of 1JZ cam covers that we haven't decided fully on the colour combo for yet, highlight colour for the engine bay is going to be HKS purple so I wonder if you can get a purple hammertone/wrinkle...
  13. Don't bother unless you have a lot of extra work done to the engine too - mate had the exact same model 7AFE as me, same mods (I took his exhaust and intake when he parted his car out) except he had a shaved head and eManage piggyback ECU and only put out ~6kw more at the wheels, despite several thousand dollars worth of work. In short, in these cars the best performance upgrades come from handling mods until you look at turbos or swapping in a 4AGE or 3S engine
  14. Don't listen to this advice, it is wrong. He is trying to get you to buy automatic transmission oil. There are many manual transmission oils an 75W-90 would be fine. Toyota Genuine manual transmission oil is fine, or this(which I have used and am more than happy to recommend): http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Gear_and_Differential_Oils/Full_Synthetic_75W-90_Performance_Smooth_Shift_Manual_Gearbox_and_Transaxle_Oil/#.Um9K2SHPtow There are a couple of Toyota manual gearboxes that do use ATF though.... WOT??? ST204 Celicas and SW20 non-turbo MR2s come to mind...probably the same S5x gearbox though.

  16. Are the Aus AE112s even OBDII anyway?
  17. No guarantees, but you'll probably find that the auto-wash will have a disclaimer waiving any claims to damage caused by using it, unless the damage was caused by the unit malfunctioning (like a brush smashing into your windscreen etc)
  18. I really should try and make it down for another monthly meet....too late this time though
  19. Yes they did (at least visually), the facelift models have a different style tail-light to the pre-facelift (changeover happened in mid '95). The ones in that eBay ad are pre-facelift so should be the same as yours Pre-facelift Facelift
  20. Where's the "Both" option? :P The traditional accommodation for Nationals is the Matilda Motor Inn, they reserve large chunks of the motel for Nationals entrants (if you ring up and try and book as an ordinary tourist they will say that they are full) plus provide security in the carpark as well as extra parking for the trailer queens. This tends to book out quite early though (a lot of people book a year in advance), so if we want to stay in a big group I suggest either getting in to the Matilda early or finding somewhere else. Looks like someone wants his frog cleaned...
  21. Still got mine, and I get the same feelings when driving the wife's Snoarer too - just sooooo easy to be cruising along in 5th and suddenly be doing 150km/h (no officer I would never think of speeding, sir)...that and the ability to chirp 1st through to 4th if you really want to...
  22. Being a car in Japan - you would think they would run 100 octane through this. But your definitely right about the car running rich. It was definitely running rich and apparently toyota do that at factory as a safeguard if you like. Yep, Toyota love to run their turbo engines uber-rich up top...
  23. Odo tampering in Australia is a completely different story to Japan. Remember, most Japanese people keep their cars for a couple of years and then sell them because the cost of rego gets too high, this is why places like Australia imports a large number of ~10yo cars. Also, 200,000km is nothing for an Australian car but a lot for a Japanese one - Honshu (the main island) is basically the size of Australia from Brisbane to Melbourne and inland to the Great Dividing range, and yet they cram 103 million people onto that island and 2 of the top 10 largest metropolitan areas in the world, so public transport is rife and you rarely need to drive a car long distances.
  24. I doubt that odo tampering goes on these days (considering you can actually get the Japanese service/rego details which lists the k's), it is more a case of poor servicing and lack of general care that makes a ~60,000km car have the engine condition of a 200,000km one (you'd really struggle to get 200,000km in 10 years over in Japan unless you were a taxi driver) Cam it sucks that what looked to be a nice clean motor had a hidden demon inside, but better you find out now than in the middle of a road trip. In saying that though, just by changing the turbo you could have disrupted the oil system (as you would have removed/refitted oil lines etc), so there is a slim chance that you may have dislodged something that then found its way through the system - highly doubt it though as that is what the strainer and filter are for, but you never know (and I'm not sure where the turbo/s fit in the oil circuit of a JZ)
