  1. Did it start out of the blue or was it after some form of maintenance?

Have the cooling system pressure tested before jumping to any conclusions. A cylinder leakdown test is also worthwhile(as painful as it is to do on a van).

  2. The only ones that will be direct plugin are genuine Toyota units, which are all rubbish, inclusive of the one that is fitted to my 2013 SR.

The better option is to choose an aftermarket unit that suits your needs and buy the appropriate Aerpro adapter cables.

Not that much though. So forced induction is out of the game. :)

i think I will end up with Pod filter and upgrade exhaust sytem

You will not make noticable power(possibly none at all) then. You will just make it louder.

I am very much into preventative maintenance and optimization/efficiency preferring to keep my vehicles stock standard.

One size does not fit all.

just really after things to do and what to do. Love playing around with cars that is the reason why I ask.

Forced induction is a sure way to gain power. Everything else is hit and miss. How much money do you want to throw at it?

  5. Not at all, have you looked at many of the other cars around you? 4WDs with bullbars, etc.

It can act as a little more crash protection. You are better off leaving it on. "Bullish" can be a good thing, it may stop morons from making stupid moves in front of you.

  6. As long as it is secured with a decent bracket, you should be fine. It will heavily depend on the officer that inspects it.

Many people have exposed filters without issue. In my opinion, it is aimed more at the people who like to have the flutter/compressor surge/"dose" sounds, which reverberate back through the filter.
