MOTHER F*CKER... the god damn piston rings dont fit.

Seems toyota made two diff. pistons for the 5sfe, one with 2.8mm oil rings and one with 4mm oil rings.

Most places (e.g bursons, repco, etc) only have the 4mm ring listing, so I bought those ones.

I've now had to track down some 2.8mm ones (which are nearly twice as expensive) and get them.

FAIL.

aahhhhh spewing! No doubt OEM would be 6-8 from Japan and twice as expensive again.

Keep at it mate, it's been REALLY interesting keeping up with your progress...

$250 from toyota, 3weeks shipping from the land of the rising sun.

I spoke to another repco, they hit up an alternate supplier and found me some ACL ones for $150 that will fit, Pick them up momday.

Nearly twice as expensive as the ones i had bought originally (ACL as well) but they are chrome as opposed to cast.

Will do as much other stuff as I can this weekend and build the motor monday.

u should have tried getting the rings from the US, probably would have taken less time rolleyes.gif Good to see more progress though, so in that case will it be done by the meet if its 3 weeks

Well I hope it will be.

I will have the rings tomorrow so they will go in tomorrow night.

If i had of known the rings I had were wrong I would have ordered some new ones at the time i ordered my other stuff.. oh well.

MEGA FAIL

put the rings in, went to push the pistons down the bore, one of the rings came loose and scored the **** outta the bore.

The block is basically useless now.

So, my options from here are;

1. Buy a new block (~200) and get it machined (~100) = $300

2. Put some new mains in the 3SGTE on my shed floor (that belongs to my housemate and has a spun main) and throw that in. = $free (3SGTE and 5SFE mains are the same part number)

needless to say, I am going with the free option...

Project 5S-GTE is now on hold, I will run the 3S-GTE until I decide what to do with the 5S.

I *should* still be able to bring the celica to sydney... fingers crossed.

pretty much, oh well 3S-GTE will have to do.

OH MY HOLY F***ING EPIC FAIL BATMAN!!!

That is some seriously shocking news. Poor 5S. Things were looking so damn good as well.

DAMN YOU PISTON RINGS! DAMN YOU!!!

Posted

shiiiittttttttttttttttttt.... that blows man... :(

3sgte would be better in the long run though... no?

albeit, not as interesting...

Posted

3S-GTE is 'safer' but less torque-y and less interesting

So the plan is to now throw the 3S in, and I will build the 5S when I have more time and money...

You can't hone the bore out and get new rings to suit?

I've never liked chrome rings, they can be bitches to get them to bed in properly and heard too many horror stories.

Unfortunately chrome was my only choice in this case.

I could bore it to remove the marks, then i need o/s pistons and rings. At the moment I don't have the time and cash for that.

When I do, I will probably go with some o/s forged pistons and new rings.
