It's time to think about tyre options

Hi guys - new tyres needed as mine are now... quesitonable in tread depth.

I believe I have 4 options:

1) Replace the car. Hmmm...

2) Purchase new 195/55/16s. At somewhere between $187 for Maxxis and $240 for Yoko's, I might be better off with something else.

3) Purchase 205/50/16 or 205/55/16 tyres. I have read the debates over this choice, and am undecided. The 50's are good with a lower wall hence less cornering deformity but the trade off is slightly less fuel economy. The 55's are okay for fuel economy etc. However with both the speedo will be out. This choice also brings the price down to the sub-$200, with plenty of tyres in the $150 range.

4) Get a mag and tyre package. I like the Krayzee rims. I can get a package with 17 inch mags plus reasonable rubber for $1000-$1400. Hmmm again...

Yes, I have read previous topics, but most of them date back 3 years. I hope that tyre tech has progressed somewhat in that time period.

Unfortunately I'm very busy for the foreseeable future, and would love someone to hold my hand with this.

Thanks.

Sounds all so similar to the argument I was having inside my head not long ago:

A few wheel/tire related questions

My final choice was to change from a 215/55R17 tire to a 225/50R17 tire. Yes it does mean the speedo will be slightly off, but because it was already 6% or so out, the smaller overall diameter with the new tires now makes the speedo closer to accurate (it's still off though).

I personally don't like the tires they put with the tire and wheel packages. To think of how much this option really costs, just look at the cost of the wheels on their own and add on the cost of the rubber of your choice. It doesn't really work out such great value then and your back to square one.

Oh yeah.... don't get Maxxis. I hear they aren't that good.

type the tyre profile you want into ebay... there are often great deals on tyres there.

more imporrtantly... the only thing thats keeping you going where you want to go is 4 tiny patches of rubber contacting the road surface, so rather than upgrade your wheels... spend on your tyres.

Safety first.

Unless you have a nice fat wallet to spend on 17's and premium rubber.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the replies.

I contacted Bridgestone (reluctantly) to find out what price the original Turanza's were going for - they weren't going anywhere.

What was recommended were the BS Supercat tyres. I haven't heard anything about these - any opinions? They are considerably cheaper than Yoko A or C drives, but I dont need a super performance tyre.

Other quotes:

Kumho KH15 195/55/16 $187

Kumho KH23 205/50/16 $145

Whaddaya thunk?

Elan haven't seen you for a while. How you been?

Have you tried getting a quote on some Toyos?

Jayme has a set of Toyo Proxes 4 and he loves them. Not too expensive either.

Hiya - I've been quite busy running the business, recently been back to Kalgoorlie, had the flu for almost 2 weeks - yeah its been a busy time!

Re the tyres - still getting quotes when I can. Only looking in the local area as it will be a case of dropping the car off and then to work. The prices so far are pretty dismal...

Well to give you reference.

My Toyo Proxes T1-R (sits one tier above the Proxes 4) were $201 each for 205/50/16. Then I ruined one of my tyres recently and got a new quote of 225 from the same place.

I'm sure you would be able to get the Proxes 4 for well under $200

I've been looking at the Toyo tyres:

Teo Plus

Proxes 4

Proxes T1R

I think the T1R might not give me the longevity I would like, but am not sure. What's the noise like compared to the original Turanzas?

I know that many on the forum use the Proxes 4 - to those, what is it like?

What about the Teo?

Argh!!!!

The T1Rs are very very quiet. I was surprised. Much quieter than the ER30s.

I think Elan that the Teo Plus' might not be sticky enough ;)

Teo Plus is what my mum used on her odyssey :P def not something you want to be in LIFT with xD good tyres thou just not for the crazy drivers.

Proxes 4 has something like 300 rating threadwear unless you go nuts with your car these tyres grips like no other :) good threadwear and when you need the grip its there for you,

T1R would be the best out of of the three but it has a significantly lower threadwear rating (you cant really have best of both worlds) end of the day it all depends what kinda driving you do most of the time. If you travel between kalgoorlie and perth a lot and you have bit of spare cash do the Proxex 4 or else the teo plus might worth considering

I think the Proxes 4 are a go. Too many say they're a good tyre, so I shall do a call around tomorrow for a good price.

Anyone else in Perth interested?

Thanks for the reviews, guys!

Elan are you in perth atm? Paul at Tyrepower Canning Vale does a pretty good deal for the TOCA boys, and his service is top notch too. Thou I suspect you might be able to find somewhere else with better price.

Yup back in Perth. Going to Kal every 2-3 months now (fly in fly out service).

Canning Vale is a tad far for tyres, so I will try locally first.

I got the same price quotes from Tyrepower in Joondalup and in East Perth. Cheaper than the Canning Vale one last time I looked.

Elan how about you try the R1Rs :P

If you dont mind Marshals, basically khumo tyres, i got my 205/40R16 tyres for 120ea fitted and balanced. I think they are bang for buck. Much better then Nexens. Never tried toyo, but will try them one day.

When I was ringing around for tires earlier, I got quoted for $195 for the Proxes 4 in 195/50R16. This is for a rather unsual tire size, so you should be able to find it a bit cheaper for the more common 205/50R16. Mind you I'm over in the east.. :P

Thanks for the price reference. Pity is that tyres are more expensive here, but haggling is an art :)

Import from overseas?

Actually no - the Proxes are from Tyrepower and the Re001 from Bob Jane

I get the feel that the Re001 is a better tyre - nice and sticky, but dont necessarilylast as long as a result. Meanwhile, the Proxes 4 is a good compromise for grip and longevity... The guy at TP said, however, that the Kumho KH15 is not only cheaper ($175), but is comparable to the Proxes. He did go on to say that he did not have anyProxes in, but did have the KH15.

I did not expect the Re001 to come in at this price, so I have not really looked at it. Is this just a case of personal taste?

That's a really good price on the RE001. I got the same quote over a year ago so that's real good. But as you said Elan they won't last as long as the Proxes 4. They are even softer than the T1Rs I believe.

In regards to the Kumhos; I think he is trying to offload them. They might have been sitting there for a while as well so that's something to think about as well.

Which Tyrepower did you get the quote from?

Given that I work about 5km from home, I think the re001 will last me plenty of time, so I think I will treat myself. More opinions would be appreciated though.

The Proxes quote came from Norm at Tyrepower Inglewood. If anyone else is in the market for Toyo's in the next few days/weeks, we might be able to negotiate a better price. My Echo is in need of new tyres as well, so +1 that.

Thanks mate

Problem solvered:

Bridgestone Morley has re001 for $195...

... and I get a free return flight to either Broome, Adelaide and Melbourne!

BARGAIN!

WAIT!!! HOLD UP!!!

From 24th of August on...

RE001 205/50R16 is going for 169 (or 161.50 for RAC members) at B Select, Bridgestone Tyre Centres and Bridgestone Service Centre.

I got the RAC magazine here. I can scan it if u want..

Free flight offer ends on the 22nd of August, so its either 134 dollar savings or you can choose to fly :) I guess if you have plans to go away the free flight is actually better value for money :)
