In terms of how VVTL-I delivers its power i think its closer to the old VTEC in Civic VtiRs and DC2 Integra TypeR than the newer i-VTEC in DC5 Integra TypeR.

VVTL-I is actually closer to i-VTEC than V-TEC. Older Vtec only changes cam lobes whereas i vtec does that plus advances the cam timing like VVTL-I. VVTL-I advances the cam timing and increases the lift(opens the valve further) but does this on the same cam profile. Honda actually changes cam lobes.
