Hey guys,

just replied in another thread about my old hot rods from back in the 90's.

Back then when we modified and turbo'd cars we had to get then engineered, well we didn't have too,,,, but I did to keep the cops off my ***** and be legal.

Is this still relevant today? Can you still get engineer reports for modded cars to make them legal.

Here's a bit of history from me, I went digging and found my engineers report from when I turbo'd and old van back in 1990!

thought i'd post em up for those that have never seen one of these cert's. I'd be keen to know if anyone here can post up a more recent version of what these look like now. I'm sure people just don't go throwing turbo's and superchargers on with no legality to say the cars are safe to drive.

this was the front cover issuded by the rta,,,,, check the sexy 1990's fonts lol

This was the "forenote" from the engineer to the RTA

img011.jpg

A cert for the noise emissions , there is also one for weight, brakes and suspension just didn't scan

A bit of RTA history for those that have never seen these reports.

I used to carry these papers in the glove box, I used to get pulled over a fair bit in those days.....young dumb and full of cum the saying goes.

I'll post some pics of the Van up asap.

Those shots are really cool. I still have a soft spot for escort panel vans, and those GT Radials sure bring back some memories!

Oh and yes, Engineers reports definitely still relevant especially if you want to avoid defects and be insured...

Cheers m8 ty, Noodle's came over a lil while ago and had his tyre writing whitened , I was tellin him how it brang back the old days when it was just cool to have that.

I thought that would be the case, Im amazed to think people would be crazy enuf to goto such extremes and not have report. I never thought about the insurance part of the problem.. crazy stuff. almost on the side of negligence. Specially since these mods are done to go fast on our streets.

Yes, its still good to get an engineer certificate for modded cars, especially to the cops off your back.,

Great work with the restoration work on the Escort panal van :)

Thanks Ron :D I'll make some more threads of past rides few nice V8's and fast 4's in the mix as well.

Shoulda mentioned this was actually built as a work van :P

Was the fastest courier in syd for a long long time :D

Did the engineers reports ever save you from some over-zealous transport officers or Police?

Posted

A few times , we never had transport officers back then but cops were always a worry.

If I remember correctly my rego papers had a number on them as well to indicated the car was legally modified.

I remember a time racing a v8 Cortina on parra rd heading to the legendary Brickies Street Drag race strip. We were both pulled over for speeding..... stupid now I look back.....

He got defected for illegally modified car "engine not comply numbers not matching exhaust too loud etc " and was made to leave his car and walk home... with his mates.

I was fined and got to drive away less points but in my car, it was a good feeling... it was a great feeling tbh. I remember feeling pretty chuffed with myself that night i'd won two times. Went to brickies and won a short quarter run again a rotary

Not having to go home that night pulling my engine out the next day putting a stocker back in to go over pits and waisting a week of my time and loosing my work car and then having to reverse it back to turbo.... what can I say. I was covered.

We are not talking about putting bigger wheels or a air pod. If we get done for this, AKA Rob, it's a pretty simply get out of jail.

It's a whole motor in and out or half @ min.... The cert says my work is of good sound quality and of a standard that was acceptable by law. Back in those days it said a lot to a car modders cred.

I'd been pulled over a few times in town as well again

Good old brickies RIP but ended up morphing into Sydney's Phoenix. :D

That is a neat build. What ended up happening to it?

Cheers Josh

I think from mem, i quit the delivery game for a while and sold it off. I have since tried to track it down thru other forums would love to know what became of it.

It was the only one of its type back then and that made it pretty rare. Shortly after the bike bug bit and i got into modifying big bikes.

Nice build ..... And yes an engineers is still required ...... More so now than in the past ..... The rules are a lot tighter on newer cars and as stated most of the newer legislation affecting newer cars means they are road legal without an engineers = u ain't covered by insurance as stated.

Good stuff mate

Oh god yes ..... For me personally there was one main occasion where had i not had the engineers i would have been totally screwed ..... The cop was intent on wanting me ending up walking home or something ..... But in the end i left without copping anything other than 30 min lecture about done up cars & he was just assuming i was another hoon who didn't have a clue about this stuff ..... Boy was he surprised when i pulled the engineers certificate out ...... If only i had a camera recording his reaction.

I do plan on getting my car completely engineered (at least until before the aftermarket ecu is fitted). Question is, who knows of a reputable place/person to get it going? As i might want to have a chat to them before i start to see if they suggest any other upgrades such as brakes etc etc.

Wish I could help ya mate, it's been 20yrs since I had anything engineered for rta compliance.

didn't even have the internet back then, im sure I just started by looking in the yellow pages then calling around.
