Hello & Welcome

Installing the RIGHT muffler can improve your car's performance by reducing the back pressure in the exhaust system and allowing better flow, but installing an incorrect one that has too little back pressure can reduce your performance. For example, installing those generic straight through cannon type mufflers that you tend to see alot of won't necessarily be good. Do your research, speak to different exhaust specialists and don't purchase the first one you find.

Air filter/Air Panel Filter, same thing. When you read people state they've installed a K&N, BMC, Toms, TRD, Green Stuff, etc replacement filter or panel filter, it means they've replaced the standard air filter ( In the stock airbox ) with a better flowing Cotton Gauze or foam type filter, which gives better air flow and a very slight increase in power. K&N and BMC are generally the best.

Most CAI's come with a filter already, generally you don't need to change it, but a few people do, it's just personal preference and some filters have been shown to be better than others. ITG and K&N extreme have shown best results.

ECU - Engine Control Unit or simply chip means that you upgrade the engine's management computer. Most of the time manufacturers program the engine management with very conservative settings to safeguard themselves. You can increase the engines performance by having a less conservative tune and optimise the engines settings for better performance. Because you take your other modifications into consideration when tuning all the settings, it's best to do this as one of the last mods.

Hey there and welcome to the forum!!!! :D Well to start with....YES u will get better performance but only a "little"....not too much at all with just a muffler if ur talking "FULL" exhaust then definatley u will gain KW!!! extractors, hi-flow catalytic converter and depending maybe a larger diametre in the exhaust piping itself!!!

As for air filters..... There is either a "pod" style or a "pannel" style filters which are mostly used for cars....K&N is quite a popular brand amongst modifiers but there are hundreds of other companies to choose from out there!!! You dont necessarily need a better one but if u do, do "cold air induction" you would be wasting ur time just using the standard filter as it it very restrictive in terms of air-flow!!!! The other side of CAI and filters, is that most of the kits come with a "pod" style filter and in most states are a DEFECT unless they are placed in a fully sealed box!!!But most of the guy out there arnt too worried about this factor so its up too you!! You can always go for a replacement "pannel" filter and use ur standard air-box and make some type of piping up into it!!! You now have a better air-filter, CAI and you stay legal!!!!

ECU.....Aftermarket ecu's can be programmed by the user to perform many diferent functions such as give the engine more fuel, more air, cool down better and the list goes on!!!! It gives you the oppertunity to tune the car the way u want it!!! they can range from any where between $1,000 ------>

Just Get a CES exhaust system  :D

Basically the engine needs two things - air and fuel

increasing either one will improve ur power

more oxygen = better combustion as u know u need oxygen to burn

more fuel = more combustion

So by having all these breathing mods - from the air intake all the way through to the exhaust will improve the flow of air in and out of the engine. e.g a turbo back exhaust on a turbo car helps alot more than an exhaust on a na car simply because of the way the turbo works with the exhaust manifold and the exhaust allows more air to be expelled.

Typically an exhaust on its own will not give you that much gain. use it in conjuction with ECU, injectors, CAI, headers etc and they all benefit from each other.

Oh and also the ECU - main use is with the contorl of the engine in terms of how much air and fuel to use at what revs/gear etc- so if u do alot of performance mods u would want to change it or get a piggy back so that u can change the settings in accordance with the mods u have installed.

And i'm sure u will get a good reply from the guys on this forum!!! :D I have only been on this forum for a short time too and find that the search tool doesnt always help to find relevant info!!!

I thought that forums especially with "cars" being so techincal, they were there to help people gain more understanding about products and how things work and to get advise from other enthusiasts!??!?!?! Obviously not all the time....And moderators are there because are very active on the forum and have great knowledge about our cars!!!! Well most of the replies to peoples problems have been from ordinary members!!! The only words from "THE KNOWLEDGIBLE ONE'S" are "Go use the search this topic has already been covered"!!!

:D MODS be more helpful to people not everyone knows everything the automotive world has to offer!!! And if you cant be nicer and use your "powers" for good not evil....LOL....hehehe  GO AND DEMOTE YOURSELVES!!!! :P :P :P JOKES!!MODS!!! I still luvs yas!!!! :D

Think you be looking at $150-300 for CAI kit with pod depending on what brand u get e.g. KN, simota, TRD, trust, etc

  • 3 weeks later...

i was doing some search.. more about air filter panel/pod

now.. i understand more wt u guys said b4..

hmmm

just couple question...

1. is a pod better than a panel?

2. CAI needs a panel or a pod right? so if im bought a panel/pod filter... i will have to remove them.. since CAI some with a filter anyway.. is that right? or can i keep using my old filter replacing their filters... if mine r better

or its just 2 seperate filters?...?!! man im confused..

plx help out

If you install a CAI or SRI you're replacing your existing airbox/air intake so your existing panel filter will be of no use anymore.

CAI/SRI's have shown greater gains than a drop in panel filter.

huh!!??! then... i shouldnt buy any filters i guess... if im gonna buy a CAI.. right?

i was gonna buy a pod (dont know which brand, done no research yet) or a TRD panel air filter....

but anyway.. is a pod better filter than a panel?

i think i isunderstood the other guys b4...

sigh~

Ok

If you purchase a cold air intake or short ram intake, both of which are a tube that attaches to your throttle body and replaces your existing air intake and air box, you will require a pod type filter to fit to the end of each.

Almost all CAI or SRI kits come with their own pod-type or cone filter. So there's no need to purchase an additional filter unless the kit you purchase doesn't come with one. (This option gives you approx 4-7kw increase at wheels and will cost anywhere between $250 and $500)

If you don't purchase a cold air intake or short ram intake, and choose to simply use your existing plastic intake system, you can improve it with a better flowing panel filter which is the same shape as the stock paper filter and takes its place in the existing plastic air-box. (This will give you better throttle response but probably only around 1kw increase at the wheels and will cost you approx $150)

A CAI/SRI kit will give greater gain than replacing the filter, but will be more costly.
