G'day fellas,

a belated happy new year, i've had my 2003 conquest for a few months now and i've pretty much grown sick of a stock looking GG, that's what i call her. So I've been inspired by Drift Battle's Project Cheapskate and have endevoured on a project of my own  - to create a half decent lookin' Rolla that sounds and looks the part. Mind you, i'm not intending to make it a "wannabe" Sportivo, 'cause that's my next potential ride (i think i need lift, after falling in love with BangN's Stivo - he owned me quick :o ...only took him three gears B)

funnily enough, i'm negotiating with BangN's racing pipe gizmo gadget atm. yeah i know, rice heaven....what can u do? Anywayz, i'm wondering if any of you fellas know a place where they powder coat rims (black, cause my care is silver B) ) somewhere arounds Melbourne?

And rear boot spoilers, mine didn't come with one, and i'm hoping to acquire one, where do i get those bad boys for an "economical" price?

Also, how do Lovells compare to King's and Pedders? Price and quality wise? ...cause the emphasis is "EL CHEAPO" ...but not to the stage where it'll shame the Toyota Owners CLub

btw. I've used teh "search" function and i don't get much  but it's probably cause every one actually buys a new set of rims? AND *breaths* thanks heaps to HDACHE for the tips on how to remove the logos, the CONQUEST looks promising now...i'm trying to think of using the letters to speel something else, but the only word that comes to mind is a little bit too repulsive for other drivers i think... :P

Hey guys, thanks heaps for replying, but i'm really intrested in powder coating my rims, cuase that pretty much doesn't void any warranty at all  ! I heard it's about $40 bucks per wheel at some joint down at bell street? ...also, Lovell springs, what's up with that? They're not that popular...why? is there a quality difference between Kings and Lovells?

Posted

RME1 I wouldnt be surprised if the kings and lovells are the same. I have whitelines, and I was told they are made by kings. The spring brands are not a major factor, its the spring rate that you need to discuss with your suspension specialist and what you intend to use the car for etc. Give Damien a call at suspension city in North Melbourne for advice. he has done quite a few corollas including mine, E-Genes and 2fst4u 's rolla.

is this price for king springs too good to be true??

I found eyelids, for all those ppls that wanted to know, Cyber Century in springvale sell them for $40 bucks!!! and grill is for $90 !!!! $_$

What's the general prices for king springs - and the measurements for Lows and Super lows? which is better? because they are the same prices at autobahn - $145 each (front and rear)

i too was looking for Kings. then i went to Mr.Muffler to ask for them but they say they deal with Lovells only. As usual, for marketing talk...they say Lovell is a bit better than Kings in terms of robustness such as thicker springs. i did look online for more info on Lovells but can't find much stuff except that they have been in the business for a very long time (since 1931..if i am not wrong). websites did show that Ford/Holden peepz like to use them. also the Toyota Prado peepz uses them frequently too.

neewayz, i got them installed on my stivo and seems like it made my ride a sexy and sweet one now. check it out! ;)

mate! i'm looking for eyelids and the grille's too. might be heading down Cyber Century to look me up some. i will nego with them to give me that price they gave u. so when u got them...they are non-coloured rite? and the base is sorta ugly, patchy looking black?

ktse1881, just picked them up today....$125 for both eyeliods and grille!!!

bargain the hell outta them, cause i reckon u can go 110 easy - it's plastic, no primer, a little bit rough, but nothing a good sanding can't fix ...how much were ur lovells springs? i'm lookin' into springs atms - pay day in two weeks $_$

Quick runnning total:

-lights (lowbeam + parkers) ; $65

-eyelids $40

-grille $85

-paint + primer $23

-sand paper (400 + 1200 grit) $2

total spent = $215

nice! might just follow ur gets on the eyelids+mesh grille+paints, etc. btw, ur paint and primer, u got them off the same shop or Bunnings? heh heh. hope i can get $110 outta them. :D

oh for my Lovells, they are Sports Lows (Sp/L) but you can get Super Lows (S/L) like those of Kings Super Lows. should be of the same price.

mine's $340 fitted and mind you, they did a GREAT job. i did not feel the need yet to go for wheel balancing and alignment as there's no swaying one side of the steering wheel or even shaking of the steering. it all seems normal as though nothing's done to it....heh heh...except now me ride is L-O-W. ;)

Nar, i didn't get the paint and primer at the same place...it's springvale, and it looked pretty bodgey...think of it as your garage - it's CASH ONLY $_X

-need i say more?

 i'm having trouble getting the metallic grey colour right for my eyelids + grille...i'm using grey primer...maybe i should use white?

i know a place that will fit me either Kings super lows or sport lows for $350 plus balancing - it's on springvale - "techie on the move" , near the rail way station

My mate, who has a civic, got king springs supa lows fitted for $300 bucks at sunshine Tyre Power...do 'Rollas attract those type of bargains?

Did the $350 include Wheel Alignment ?

Posted

Nah.. but after you have your car lowered the springs need to settle for around 1000ks.. then you get the wheels aligned..

funny story for mine..

booked my 20K service at Cannon in Heidelberg.. decided i may as well get the wheel alignment done at the same time (had been 1000ks)

When i took my car in the wheel alignment felt perfect anyway.. was driving straight, not pulling to either side..

got the car back and now when i hold the steering wheel in the centre it goes left

went back and told them.. only to be informed that they dont do the alignment there... much to my suprise..

When i enquired about who drove my car to the wheel alignment place they told me the beaurepairs guys come and pick it up..

VERY ****** OFF! i dont like anyone driving my car..

so not only did they do a **** wheel alignment.. they also added some scratches on the front of my bumper.. (underneath, but thats beside the point)

NEVER EVER going to Cannon Toyota in Heidelberg again.. except for my seemingly monthly warranty repairs

end rant

is the suspension stiff when u get from normal to sport lows? is it noticable?

how low is it compared to normal? 2inch drop for lows?

wats the diff betwen the brands such as Kings, whiteline and lovells? are they all the same? or are some stiffer than others?

are they all progressive springs?

Edited by DuGong

It is stiffer than normal suspension.. you have to be more careful, big bumps rattle your teeth.. as there is less suspension travel

lows is 35mm drop

super lows 50mm drop i believe

apparently

lows for handling

super lows for looks (of course handling is increased as well, but the lows handle better apprently)

hahah DU GONG asked all the questions i wanted to ask! So motoman, that was *UR* video i saw chugging around hieldberg? B) respect to hit lift just around the corner of a copper station

anywayz, updates:

-the eyelids and grille are makin' my life a living hell...i'm losing sleep over it - there are too many shades of grey and they never...EVER match  code199 my *****

went to painters in Hallam...yes Hallam...that's springvale road plus 20 mins and am gettin' it sprayed for 100 bucks...Q & K painters - very friendly and appretiated my renassance style picaso mouldiing sad excuse for a primer base (there were lumps) :)

i *may* be able to get Kings Spings for dirt cheap...*MAYBE* here's a whiff of hope...say $100 a pair  ...no they didn't fall off a truck, i do army reserves and one of the fellas is an apprentice tradie - so mates rates (except i don't like the bloke....there's always a catch  )

listening out for lift,

RME1 (*** i want a sportivo) $_$

lows look ok.. anything is better than stock..

there is no price difference.. if i had my choice again id still go for the superlows..

sure speedbumps can be an issue.. but i havent come across a speedbump yet that i couldnt get over without scraping

p.s.

Yer RME1 that was me around the corner from the cop station.. im sure they are used to the sound of my car now, i give it frequent fangings up Burgundy street in the morning (im a baker).. but always disappear before they arrive :P

i actually had a cop catch me once.. on the way to work.. but we are on good terms with the Heidelberg cops.. he just said to slow it down a little.. didnt even get out of his car

I think secretly he wanted to go for a spin

painting it ourselves is a no no for moi. kinda tough as you have to match the colour though it seems easy to do unless you wanna follow the COLOUR CODE that's located on the information plate in the engine compartment of your ride.

RME1 got it painted professionally for $100 which I reckon should be the right price as MJ Motors in Springvale does it for nearly the same price too. since you are into it, might as well get it done nicely right? ;)

Ive got the superlows, yeah you do have to be a bit careful on speed humps when you are in the car by yourself but when you have mates in the back, lets just say that acute angles are used and still some scrapping.....I had 2 friends in the back and i could barely fit my fingers between the tyre and the wheel arch, thats with 50 series on the back with the stock wheels

The handling is unbelievable though, very little body roll
