TOYOTA has recalled 70,000 of its Australian cars as part of a worldwide recall involving more than a million vehicles.

The company has identified a potential problem with headlight dimmer switches in its Corolla, RAV4 and Echo models manufactured and sold between May 2000 and July 2002.

A Toyota spokesperson said no Australian cars had been found with the problem, but local models would still be included in the recall which extends to Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

Toyota Motor Corporation Australia spokesman Peter Griffin said the faulty headlight dimmer switch contact points could overheat.

"The owner might see the headlights starting to flicker or at worst the headlights won't work at all," Mr Griffin said.

"But it's important to note that there have been no reports of this condition in Australia at all."

The recall affects 1.4 million vehicles internationally.

"In Australia, we think it's about 69,800 or just under 70,000," he said.

Mr Griffin said there had been no reports of accidents or incidents as a result of the fault.

"It's just one of those things when you become aware of a potential problem you want to get on top of it."

Owners would be contacted by mail in November advising them to take their car to a dealer, where it would be repaired at no cost.

Mr Taylor was confident the recall would not affect sales of the car maker's most popular model, the Corolla.

"In September it (Corolla) was the top selling car in the country ... this is a concern because you want to have the best quality car out there and Toyota prides itself on its quality."

The Wall Street Journal reported that the recall would set Toyota back about $US127 million ($A166.86 million), based on an estimated repair price of $US100 per car.

But Mr Griffin would not give a cost estimate.

"There's certainly a cost involved with this sort of exercise but we don't discuss the amount," he said.

Hey guys! Talk about reviving an old thread!!!

I got my recall letter in the mail TODAY...

It's 2006 now... almost a year after the recall was announced...

"Our records indicate your vehicle was manufactured within the range of vehicles that require rectification, and that your vehicle has not yet been rectified..."

So the people who owned the car before me didn't get it done, or it was already crashed and sitting in the auction yard while the recall stuff was happening.

I'll book it in i guess :)

P.S. How bout the spokesperson's name being Peter Griffin!!! That's gold!!! :D

ROFL...hahaha. Beers in order for you next time I'm up there mate lol.

Yeah...the RX8 sucks petrol hardcore (classic rotor) although I can overlook that. My other car (the Escort) has twin 45mm weber carbies on it. Used 2 1/2 tanks of petrol going to sydney and back. Used 1 tank to sydney and back with the sportivo haha.

The MPS3. hmm. later on I shall see. happy with the sportivo (insurance). I'll still liking the sedan chassis though hehe.

I shall see man...you have me thinking for the future though ;)

Actually my old man and I are getting a bit edgey to drive it as well haha (it's 'his' car now as I handed it back to him when the Tivo was bought). It's still up in my godfather's workshop. Brand spanker LSD being put in it. Hopefully an alloy head soon as well so the thing will rev out to 7,500 by then. Never been dynoed...hmm. I think it's like 100kw odd atw, but it makes it all down low. SOHC.

Wow what a situation...we want to drive each others cars hahaha.

PS: We're sorry we hijacked the thread people. We'll stop now :S lol

Woah Rob you sure did hijack this thread! Hahaha lucky you're sexy.

Finally went and got this recall done... They changed my headlight switch (the whole arm) so now I have a 4 year old shiny black one on the left (the windscreen wiper one) and a new grey one with a rough-ish matte finish on the right <_< Do you think it will stay grey or will it wear and turn black after a while? It looks out of place... Also worth noting my indicator "tick-tick" noise is nice and quiet now :)

I've blown 2 bulbs in the last year, one left and one right, but considering how old the car is I guess the finger can't really be pointed solely on the switch.

When I dropped the car off my fuel light had just come on and I reset my trip meter and took note of the Odo - didn't want my eye-candy attracting any unnecessary "test drives" (that happened to someone on here didn't it? Northy maybe? Can't remember). Anyway the trip meter had 6.1km on it when I picked it up so they drove it presumably to chick if everything was back together properly and the indicators etc worked (the job requires removing the steering wheel too). All in all though, I prefer the system where you speak directly to the bloke in the overalls rather than the slick suit in the office - makes me feel more comfortable with the service.

'Tick Tick' noise, is that Toyota's Technical term for it ? hahahaha

6.1km seem like a fairly lengthy test drive to test an indicator stalk.... ;) (It was Northy who's car went for some questionable test driving)

Haha hell yeah dude, they used the term in the recall letter :whistling:

I think 6km is fair, but who knows what they do with it when they drive it.
