Project Mars Custom Headlight mod!


Big thanks to Chris for having the balls to let me do this light mod!


After much discussion Chris and i have decided it's time to give his aftermarket Mars projector lights some mod loving


These lights look awsome when they are turned off! but turn em on and bleh!

The CCFL angel eyes look nasty dull and cheep and the DRL is a completely different colour almost a dull purple and also pretty dull.

The blinker omg it's where a light should be!

The list of mods we will change are,


Remove CCFL's and change for Ultra bright LED's rings

Remove DRL and replace with Mercedes style strip blinker

Replace Original bulb blinker with Second HID projector lense for dual active headlight setup.

Adding DRL to lower bumber.

Hoping for something truly unique and orginal.


Here's a few starter piccy.










Remove the standard CCFL rings







Test fitting the new 90mm LED ring upgrades




Splitting the CCFL from it's diffuser ring




These will be fitted back over the new LED rings to even out the dots.

A quick bench test shows the difference using the diffusers make

Next is to test fit the new HID projector to where the blinker used to be housed.

These pics show the original DRLLED strips, these are removed and the housing fitted

with new Amber/yellow LED's and tested.

Defyant Mod's ™ is open for business :D

The workshop is setup here at the new place happy to start other projects.

One of the main mods to Chris's new lights is the Dual Active twin HID projectors.

The Mar's headlights needed some extra modding to accommodate the the second projector.

Rather than just add a static bracket to hold the projector in place Chris and i discussed making the second projector fully adjustable.

A custom bracket was made up to hold the factory clips and adjusting bolts.

The blanks are drilled

Adjusting bolts and retaining clips fitted

an adaptor plate is added to the aftermarket HID projector

fitted into the assembly

and a qik test with some stocker lights

How are the lights re sealed when they are re assembled?

And are they tested with a hose and in the rain?

Hey Al,

They are sealed with a heat activated caulking type compound head to remove and heat to reseal.

I basically use a hot air gun, if your oven is large enuf you can use that.

Others make temp ovens out of boxes. I find the heat gun to be the best.

These are aftermarket tai headlights so they open in the backs and take water, I will guarantee they won't leak through the front but the backs always need extra work to seal them up.

I've done it a few times now, and getter better each time,

Another update!

Todays effort was to replace all the white LED's on the original strips for amber LED's ,Very time consuming but worth the effort.

The other and final mod is the inclusion of a white side accent parking light, Still deciding if we will add the Devil eyes!

Wish i could update this mod sooner with some progress, i'm being d1icked around by my led supplier in china.... hopefully somthing soon.

Get these ones done and then i'll start taking orders if they come out the goods :)

finally 50 days after i ordered these parts they have arrived!!!!!

90mm smd angel eyes,

The best part about sourcing the exact size is the standard diffusers can be re used.

Drilled and small tie wire is used to secure in place.

Tied off at the rear, simple but effective

Testing the new LED angel eyes

for the new parkers some thin 3mm white plex is cut and heated to the right shape then glued and screwed into place.

The final look Parkers on, angel eyes and new blinker

Wow those angel eyes are bright :) I love it. I like the Perspex half the time and then I keep thinking it looks lonely over there if you know what I mean??? But I don't know how to stop that feeling. Maybe I have to see it in real life

luke have you ever thought of doing something similiar to the BMW's ?

with the DRL on top - makes it look like eyebrows instead of having eyelids

OR WITH THE ANGEL EYES blinking with the blinkers ? like above ?

Ok so we finally have all the bits and pieces we need but a new problem occurred the other day. Apparently the chrome on these lights is so thin that even a finger print will start to mark it. So after a quick brainstorm we decided to dechrome the lights and take them to a pro to get them resprayed in a gloss black. Spent about 20mins sanding back the lights in prep for the painter on saturday. Should have them sprayed by the end of the week (if they ever get out of my boot :))
