How strong is the vvtl-i engine?

Hey all,

I have always been in to my modified and tuned cars and the Corolla TSport will be no different. I get the impression that the exhaust and intake are pretty sorted on the car from the factory as is the head.

Reading various posts on here and on the celica owners club I see a common way of extracting more power is to supercharge the engine and some have even fitted a turbocharger. I don't have the money to follow these paths however I do have a Wizards of NOS Wet nitrous kit that I have used on my previous car and removed before selling the car. I plan on fitting this to the corolla once I have overcome a few minor niggles...

* Traction control! If the TC is activated whilst operating nitrous things could get very messy so I need to only use nitrous with TC switched off, does anyone know where the relay is for TC? I want to wire in the nitrous so it can only operate if TC is OFF and it cuts the nitrous is TC steps in.

* Bottle storage - Going to put it under the boot carpet in place of one of the plastic trays, the carpet will rise slightly but it will keep it out of harms way.

* Installation location - Going to fit the crossfire fogger UNDER the intake pipe so its hidden, also going to fit the pulsoides (solenoides) in a location hidden from view. It will all be very stealthy!

I have ran 50hp jets on 1.8 engines before with no problems (MG/Rover 1.8 VVC 160ps) and have been speaking with people who have ran it on this engine with no problems so I know that set up well it will be safe and reliable. I only plan to add 40-50bhp gain at this moment in time, possibly going as far as 75hp in the future under a progressive controller.

This will take the car up to aprox 230-240bhp with close to 200lbft of torque :D

Few questions for you all...

* Piston rings - how strong are they? I have read 275 is about the limit?

* Exhaust - any cheap/easy improvements to be had such as decat?

* Intake - Any real benefits (other than sound) to a CAI? I have already disconnected the butterfly valve in the airbox and it sounds awesome :D

Not too many people in Australia use Nitrous due to laws on its use. However the Yanks seems to be fine on 50-75 shots. You will have to somehow get more fuel into the engine so it doesn't lean out, so a piggy back or replacement ECU will be needed. I know of one fella who gets about 165kW (220hp) from his setup on the 2zz.

There was some bloke in a white Sportivo who travelled down to the Coast for the 2008 National Meet (I don't think he stopped at Hooters). I just couldn't keep up with him. I think I remember someone mentioning that he had a nitrous setup or something. Either way, that Rolla certainly had more pull than a stock one, and had no hint of turbo or supercharger.

With the nos you would still want to increase flow with exhaust and intake, port the headder then 2.5" from the cat makes a difference.

Cat could be removed if you wanted but the factory cat is ok. The factory pipe out of the cat is not the best and chopping into the cat is better. An Injen or TRD intake would work well. Use a long 2 x 14" or 18" resonator with rear magnaflow etc

This power would be fine as long as you have the extra fuel the fuel system may need an upgrade. The current systems pump may need an upgrade and a return fuel line.

I just wrote a big ***** reply and my internet line died so I got booted off the site and lost the reply!

Will summarise...

The nitous kit I have has a nitrous and fuel 'pulsoide' so both are injected together via the crossfire fogger. the ratio is aproximately 2 nitrous to 1 fuel. This keeps the engine running ever so slightly rich so risk of issues is much reduced. I tend to run closer to 2.3 to 1 as it gives a much stronger response.

I have no immediate plans to change the exhaust or intake as I do quite like the stock items, they look and sound just fine for my needs!

The nitrous install will have to wait until the new year as I need some new high pressure line and setup injectors to safely install it but in the mean time I am loving LIFT! Accelerated from 3000rpm in 1st gear at WOT yesterday for the first time, took it to about 8300rpm and WOW, absolutely amazing how much pull these things have! If I hadn't ran out of road I would have loved to have slammed it right in to second and went all over again! Silly fun, even more frantic than our subaru!

Can anyone suggest the best means of routing a nitrous line thru from the boot to the engine bay (all on battery side) via the shortest possible path? Also, any ideas where abouts under the bonnet might be the best place to install the pulsoides? nearer the throttle the better but out of sight, thats the important thing on this install ;)

You can improve the stock intake quite a bit by just removing the snorkle to the airbox. To do this I only needed to remove the battery clamp and push the battery back while wiggling the snorkle out. I found that this gives great performance on a dry (not humid) day, even when it's quite warm. As mentioned, porting the headers is worth while too.

ok cool it sounds like u have urself a WET nos kit which does the fuel injection @ the same time as the NOS injection ..... however as suggested i would still highly recommend getting some sort of engine management just to make sure its all running right and to allow u to tweek it as required ..... there is a 2zz running NOS up north in QLD who isnt on this forum and as mentioned there are many over in the US that seem to do it ..... as highlighted 75 shot seems to be the limit with the engine so i'd suggest play it safe with a 50 shot ...... there are some really good write ups on newcelica.org

In what way does removing the snorkel help? better response etc or is it just more sound?

Yes it IS a wet kit I have, as stated in my original post ;)

Not sure that stand alone management is necessary tho, have never needed to use it in the past and as the engine has a knock sensor it should sort out the fuelling if knock is detected which hopefully it wont be! I only ever run on high octane fuel (99RON) and only use nitrous at WOT at suitable engine speeds and gears.

Its all a new adventure!

For now I guess I can take this snorkel out although I haven't heard of that before, I havent heard much in the way of modifying the stock airbox!

Any more pointers?

You will find the traction control has it's own ECU (sometimes built into the main ECU) and the only thing between that and the battery is a fuse, no relay. You run into a problem or two though if you plan to cut the power to the traction control. Say you put a switch between the battery/fuse and the traction control ECU. When you flip the switch off, the traction control will now be disabled, but this will also throw a MIL code and the 'check engine' light will come on. Turning it back on isn't simply a case of flipping the switch back on anymore. You would have to either have a OBD interface to clear the MIL code (which won't necessarily re-enable the traction control), or disconnect the power to the main ECU for about 20 seconds to reset everything (which will definitely work). Only problem with the second option, you will need to turn the car off to do this and you ECU is also going to forget it's custom map that it had set up to your driving.

If it were that easy, I'd have a traction control override switch in my Aurion already.

Well, Had a look around, I know exactly how I am going to install the nitrous kit now... Pulsoides will be attached to side of airbox near bottom below the intake pipe, fuel line is within about 8 inch so easy to take a feed from and the throttle is close also so minimal pipe is needed...

Anyhow just for reference here is the pulsoides, fuel 'T', crossfire fogger, olives, jets and some pipe ;)

If you put NOS in your rolla, my opinion would be its going to suck.

1. Get a cold air intake

2. Get a bigger exhaust

3. Make sure your clutch is in good condition or dont even bother.

4. Make sure theres some good oil in your motor.

5. Get an ECU to make sure everything is running properly and to control fuel injection.

These are the things i would consider before putting a nos setup.
