CES Exhaust fitment

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I realise there are a billion threads on this CES exhaust, but after buying one myself and having it fitted, has anyone had issues with rattling? it seems like the curve when it has to clear the rear axle (it goes over it) is hitting the chassis near the spare wheel well and making an extremely annoying rattle.

Has anyone else had this issue? We've even modified the exhaust hangers a bit to try to get it to clear the chassis a bit more. I'm lowered on coilovers so lowering the exhaust position does not seem viable. Also, shouldn't it really fit a bit better being engineered for the car?

Thanks in advance

Alfred

Thanks for the advice, yeh called them today, they said that we didn't install it properly. I guess i'll see if we can move the flange forward a bit.

That's the excuse he gives everyone and it's usually true. If' it's 2nd hand, you did fit it wrong.

I've seen the "shop" first hand and I can say there are flaws in the manufacturing process.

If you bought it new, it's probably the apprentice making it and not having it touch the stops in the jig.

Lowered or not, it shouldn't be rattling.

Without trying to badmouth anything, does anyone know why the hangers on the CES exhaust are fitted pointing the opposite direction to the stock ones? they're making things real troublesome...

Edit: yes its brand new.

years ago people used zipties and bolts to try and firm up the rubber hangers to stop their CES exhausts rattling, even those fitted by CES. I believe that might have been to address the center muffler hitting the heatshields though.

Another friend of mine had something in the rear muffler come loose and cause an annoying rattle with his CES system

If the CES exhaust bend over the torsion beam was blue printed/designed at a certain ride height, wouldn't a car with a lower ride height result in the exhaust piping hitting the torsion beam?

• Getting the mandrel bend redone over the torsion beam will fix the problem with the lower ride height.

• Zip ties on the rubbers for the hangers do help minimize the muffler movement.

• Extending the hanger arm on the muffler will help clear the heat shield better.

I'm having problems with mine rattling and making a blow off valve sound, but it only does it @ 3000 RPM when accelerating and decelerating. I took it to Carline and they said that the mesh inside the muffler may be loose. Need to get back down to Brisbane to get it to CES to get them to fix it. CES said i'm looking at $500 or so. Tempted to just leave it.

The rear muffler on your system was replaced at about 100k, depending on how many k's you have done since, it might be worth having a chat with Trev to see what he can do. Im happy to have a dig around for the receipts and scan them to you if I still have them. The system it self would have done at least 30,000k before you got your hands on it, but the rear section was brand new (or pretty close to) when I sold it. It was done at the same time I had CES do the headers.

Its done 130k now and this problem started to show up at least 10k ago. If you have any it would be much appreciated.

Ok, I've done some digging photo wise, and I put that system on in May 2007, so it probably did more like 50-60k before you got your hands on it. It was second hand when I got it, so it has definitely done some k's.

As I mentioned, the muffler was replaced at or around 90-100k so depending on what is actually making the noise . . . my guess (and its nothing more than a guess based on the age of the system) is that it would be the resonator, that thing has definitely been around the block.

I can't find a thing receipt wise, Im pretty sure everything was turfed once I sold the car.

Edit: Apologies to the thread owner, I've just realised how hi-jacked this has become. Maybe pm me if your after anything else Justa.

I did put some aftermarket rubber mounts on mine as the factory ones seemed a bit soft and the system had a bit too much movement. I did use some strips of conveyor belt and a few zip ties to see if it fixed the prob and it did. So i then bought neoprene mounts but cannot remember what the name of them was. Might have been energy suspension the same mob that did the engine mount inserts but i've had a few sleeps since 2004!!

This is EXACTLY what i think the issue is, we're looking into it. There seems to be scratches where the bend contacts the torsion beam.

Thanks for all the comments guys, will keep this posted.

it rattles all the time. The system is off for now, as aside from the rattling i found it much too loud for my liking (maybe i'm too old). I'm getting it modified with a custom Hi-tech muffler to quieten the droning.

Alf

Impulse does yours rattle the whole time or only at a certain RPM or Speed?

There is a Remus muffler that has an automatic butterfly valve similar to stock sportivo muffler. But it doesn't drone like varex and other mufflers. It's quite and has a deep tone in high revs.

However, it does cost an arm and a leg plus your kidneys ($1K).

You can also try Magnaflow resonators and mufflers.

I've opened a sportivo muffler and no valve thingi.. ?

Strange. Would of thought it would especially revving to 8000rpm. That would mean the stock sportivo is super restrictive not to have a straight through muffler.

Got photos of the insides?
