Aurion Wheel Wobble.

Recommended Posts

hi all- ive searched the web and the forums and found others reporting what seems to be the same thing, but ive yet to find a fix. I have a 2008 atx that has exhibited a wobble that seemed like a wheel balance issue. ive had the wheels balanced, aligned, and the latest is a trans fluid change. the car wobbles under light accel between 60-80kms mostly, and wobbles lightly at speeds slower or faster. when I disengage the trans, the wobbles stop. BUT, the trans specialist cant find any issues. the fluid showed no abnormal wear,a nd the converter works as it should. it seems that no one has a definitive fix for it. no fixes are detailed in the threads I have found online. anyone? cheers, tim

hi all- yep ive had all that done. Wheel bearings fine. no noise, drive shaft not replaced, but mechanic says the drive line and steering etc is all fine. it started as what I thought was a balance problem. after 3 balances, and after more attention to the symptoms, it appears to be trans related. BUT, the trans specialist cant find the problem without completely disassembling it. it changes gears fine, no noise, and trans fluid was in a condition to be expected for 150,000 kms. the clutch plate is engaging as it should. the thing that disturbs me is that I found numerous posts online from others that seemed to be reporting the same issue. But, none of the threads had any fix included. there was one thread from the US where the owner said that a software update fixed the problem. I'm struggling to work out how/why that would be...

did you have an on car wheel balance?

According to the post, yes.

ive had the wheels balanced, aligned

I dont think you understood. A normal wheel balance has the wheels taken off the car, put on the wheel balance machine and balanced. An 'on car' wheel balance is done with the car jacked up, wheels still on and then checked using a very different machine. At the Holden dealership I worked at we would sometimes have come backs for wheel balances and the on car machine would often pick up these problems

If you are referring to the balancers that spin the wheel whilst the vehicle is either jacked up or on a lift, it will do a good job of destroying a CV joint and boot whilst operating at those angles.

I have a question for you. Is the wobble coming thru the steering wheel or thru the whole front of the car.? BecUse you have ruled out

wheel balance by dropping it into neutral and it stopped. See a wheel balance will start at the same speed everytime.

Because i had an aurion come in my old workshop with the same problem after we fitted new tyres to it. We rebalanced them

twice and it didnt solve the problem.

So i test drove it and the wobble was coming thru the front of the car (mainly thru the foot well). I told him to take it back to toyota and

tell them to replace the drive shafts under warranty and the wobble stopped after they were replaced.

I'm 99.9% sure its the drive shafts the other .1% will be something dumb that someone has over looked like a bent wheel or out of round tyre (which either i highly doubt because they both will still be there while the car is out of gear)

the wobble is from the front. at first i thought it was front left, but now it feels like its from "the front". i.e. not completely from the left.

this thread has been invaluable to me- thank you all. I've had the car with toyota for a day, and am going to pick it up this morning.

they were adamant that they would be able to find the problem- even after i told them that "ive heard that before"...from toyota. (i went to 3 toyota dealers and took 6 months for them to fix the intermediate steering shaft, which was a known toyota problem and a TSB).

so my confidence in toyota isnt high.

from this thread, and others, the drive shafts sound as good a candidate as any other. one i cant eliminate.

ill re-post after i get toyota's verdict.

cheers,

tim

Hi guys/girls,

I'm having trouble understanding.

When you say wobble? Is it like a shudder like something you'd get from worped rotors?

Or is it more like someone shaking the steering wheel left to right?
