Mazda 323/3 vs Toyota Corolla Drag re-match

Dont worry....most of our boys wont be competing on the same level... seems everyones gone out and bought hairdryers for their cars :P

we'll probably have the usual smattering of dirty old BGs....HOPEFULLY we'll see some of the worked BAs cutting lose, then twiggy in the BJII and myself being the only J48 representing (unless chicaboo brings the SP18 out to play.....)

BUT, for a look more than anything else, Snert will have the snertspeed mobile out there (13 second tractionless SP23 with snail power), Ryan and Ross in the GTXWGN and Fanta power laser, Ian will no doubt bring the BPT transplanted BG out for some fun too.

I'd say we'll be looking at around the same 8 or so competators that took part last time... hopefully with less towtruck action this time.....

Round 3 at wherever that happens will be a full weekend... camp out friday night with pig on spit and booze up, race all day sat, bbq dinner pack up and leave...warwick raceway has basically told me it'll cost whatever the traction compound costs..and we can have as much or as little as we want.... none (street prep) or superglue (they claim simillar traction to willowbank) and the full range in between

i'd be looking at a november meet for round 3, and would be requiring about 40 cars to make it worthwhile (ambulance etc on stand by incase something nasty happens...) - so might open up to the mitsu forums and see if these MIVEC motors are any chop.

But thats a long way off.. lets get round 2 done and dusted.... get those sydney based rollas up here... if we get a large enough contingent of them, i'm sure the mazda boys would hookup at the gold coast and escort your 1zzs to within the city limits, then we can go for a huge cruise... why not...lets go all out =)

Then...MAYBE round 4 can be at WSID :P

Little over a month until we all lock horns again...

Is everyone still in? I have a few things that need clarifying:

  • Can you guys start a list here? I'll merge it into a list i'll start on the AGT and OMC threads so we have an idea of numbers
  • Do we want another bbq? would be a good idea if the sydney siders are coming up. Let me know because i'll look after it...$5 a head should cover it - and I suggest we do it somewhere in the midmorning, not where we had it last time (the bbq's sucked)
  • Do we want awards this time? last time it sort of fizzled out because I didn't manage it very well. It can be organised again, but i'll need someone from here to help me out (looking at you SB)
  • Or should we instead keep it friendly, and just race against our own PBs, compare notes and go home with no winners or losers (doesn't phase me or the other guys one bit....so its upto you guys)

Let me know and I'll start the ball rolling on the other forums.

Personally, I like the idea of chasing PB's and keeping it friendly, as that was in the spirit of the original idea, but the actual competitors might disagree.

Can I just say, though, that if it is going to be competitive between the two groups, then we need one or two competitors from both sides to get together and agree on the rules of play ... saves any grief later. Good spirited jibes are fun, but animosity is not.

His rules...there aint no rules

Unlimited weight reduction - allowed

Drag slicks - allowed

Type R stickers - allowed

Also, RT's will be added to ET's to get your time... so its a true race.... gotta get it all right on the night in order to be quick... you can run a 13sec pass - if your launch is 1.5secs, your time is 14.5 (your slip will only show 13 though...because the ET timer is seperate to the RT timer etc).

I am happy to discuss the rules with someone...But its fairly open...

I'm also happy to go the other way and have it be a friendly get together and PB chasing affair...that way we can all pat each other on the back no matter how fast we go...

either way, i'm happy. but I can't speak for all of OMC/AGT.

IF WE DO WANT TO HAVE A COMPETITION: i need to know soon...because...i'll sort out some prizes (will actually hand them out this time!)

OK, but how do you equalise things to be fair? For example, how do you equate a time from a lightweight, drag-slicked car vs a stocker?

This is why I suggest just a PB sort of day, because unless everyone agrees to run in the same spec, then you're comparing apples with oranges.

To me, the only other fair way to do it is make everyone do a "daily driver" run, with all bits attached and normal road tyres and base the comp on those times. Then those who want to run with slicks, stripped, etc, can run for their PB's.

I realise that the weight and slicks don't quite make the same difference as, say, FI over NA, but they still offer an advantage that not everyone can have for whatever reason.

Andrew obviously drags his car as a regular hobby, and all the best to him, but for most of the Corolla guys (and I'd imagine a fair proportion of the Mazda crew) who only drag maybe once or twice in their lifetime, the time and expense of removing everything and having a set of drag tyres set aside is not practical, or relevant.

Mind you, if the Mazda guys are using Type-R stickers, then most of the Toyota's have an advantage ... everyone knows a TRD sticker adds far more HP than the Type-R ones! :lol:

Well...the point isnt to equalise it...the sportivos have power to weight over even a savagly NA modded thing like andrews when its weight reduced!.

Also... many of us see little point in a street trim run...because, even if in street trim say you run 16 seconds flat....that is NOT an indication of how fast it is on the street... i can launch at 4000rpm on the track, get absolutely no wheel spin (if the track is warm), rip through the gears with no chrip and its great...on the street, a 3000rpm will light up... the difference in road surface and a race prepped drag surface is HUGE.... so a street trim run isnt going to give you a true indication of anything.

Stripping seats out of cars isnt that hard a job... takes me about 30mins to "race prep" my car... ok more for a toyota cos of those fancy flat folding seats no doubt...but still...shouldnt be overly that hard....

And the mazda's are behind the 8 ball to start with because of the previously stated power to weight issue...

Guys running stock, or near to stock (such as you or I) know we can't "compete" against hte likes of Northy, SB, Twilight and others.... So we go out to have fun.. pick your opponants, race people who you know you can have a good run at (theres little or no chance i'll line up the likes of northy on my first run...i might later in the night after i've proved a few things to myself)...really comes down to making of it what you will..

Also, there are plenty of other places you can "win"... win off the launch, win over 60 feet, win over quarter track... its highly unlikely that one car will "own" every inch of the track given the simillarities in displacement, traction and power of the cars... sportivo might have the top end grunt, but the oldschool mazda tech is torquey and suited to minor quarter track victories...so theres room for everyone to be a winner if thats the way you wanna look at it.

And as for TRD stickers... 5kW on a toyota, 15kW on anything else! :)

Well I guess the only fair way then is to have awards based on classes, say, fastest 2ZZ, fastest 1ZZ, fastest SP20, etc, because the cars are all so different, otherwise Andrew will just flog everyone and you may as well just give the trophy to him at the start! :P

At the end of the day, you want people to go home happy and feeling that they've had fun, rather than feeling like "yeah, well I would have beaten so-and-so but he had the advantage of product x and mod y". Or how about everyone pick their spec normal/light, slicks/street tyres, etc, for the night and have awards for most improved time, or most consistent runner.

We all know that there was some simmering animosity on both sides after the last event, and I'm just trying to suggest ways that we can turn that around for everyone's benefit.

Oh, and TRD stickers obviously give more power to Toyota's because they are designed for Toyota's. Haven't you seen Steve Irwin's "Genuine Parts" ads??? :lol:

The only way to make it truely fair is to take the cars out of the equation and have a DYO matchup.. can't do it at willowbank..but i have a quote at work from warwick dragway - cost of booking their 1/8 mile out for a weekend...and that will be round 3 of the mazda v toyota drags =)
