New excedy Clutch installed

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I sold my celica 2zz, (i now have an s2k). And just purchased a 03 Corolla sportivo with 95k for $17,500 (awesome deal!) for my GF.

The rolla had the sticky gear changes and was impossible to shift in to any gear cleanly above 7k. Installed the new excedy clutch and its like a new car again :yahoo: I Can easily land lift every gear. All for $900 at Malven auto tech Glen Iris (melb).

I recommend these guys for clutch replacement. Ask for Brad.

far out that's an expensive clutch job!

well given he may not be a mechanic and may not have connections in the automotive industry from memory the automotive handbook on the 03+ rolla says this is a 6.5hr job.

Now more than likely he was quoted on this figure. Now depending on the mechaninc ive seen some charge $80 per hour+ (i believe toyota charges $88 per hour for their $10 per hour apprentices <_< <_< <_< ) this puts the price at $520 just for labour so a further $380 for an exedy clutch isnt totally outrageous for the clutch given it was bought from the mechanic and he's probably put his small mark up on top of his purchase price ......

$800 - $1200 is what some of the workshops charge around sydney for this job as well (clutch included) .....

far out that's an expensive clutch job!

i rang around heaps of places and he was the cheapest, most quotes were around $1100.

Apparently it takes 5 hours to do.. Oh well could have saved a couple of hundred by i was eager to get it done.

So they charged you $100 an hour labour and full price for a HD Exedy clutch? The clutch would cost the workshop between $180-260 from the distributor, I'll guess they charged you 400ish for it.

It took us 4 hours to do MAP81's clutch on the garage floor, it saves at least an hour when you have access to a hoist and transmission jack in a proper workshop

The gearbox is pretty easy to get out of the new rolla's compared to the older ones, it took me 6 hours do do the rear main oil seal on my mrs AE92 Levin in the garage by myself, that requires the whole subframe to be dropped etc.

I can't see how it could possibly take a real workshop 5 hours.

Yeh, i would agree that it is a little exy. I had my clutch and flywheel installed for 340 all up. And you can pick up clutches for under 400. But yeh as long is your happy and they did a good job!

300-400 all up not including the clutch kit depending on what oil they use, if they use new driveshaft nuts, if they replace the rear main seal while the box is off, if they use new flywheel bolts, if they do a wheel alignment afterwoods etc etc.

Labour is usually around $80 an hour, and a clutch change with flywheel machining should take an experienced workshop around the 3 hour mark. The hardest part of the whole job is getting the old driveshaft nuts off so they dont damage the thread on the shaft. Toyota have a nice SST specifically for this job.

Gearbox oil is about $30, new driveshaft nuts are $5ea, new rear main seal is $5-16 depending on what brand you get, flywheel bolts are a few $$ea, wheel alignment is about $40, then they'll probably have a small charge for consumables like the locktite used on the clutch/flywheel bolts, cleaning products etc (if they bother to use loctite or to clean the inside of the box and fork etc before re-assembly.), moly grease for the clutch fork etc

The max price you should pay for a HD Exedy kit including organic plate and Nachi/NGK throwout bearing is $350, although I have seen places charge in excess of $400. In Brisbane I recommend NPC as a decent place to purchase the clutch from (last one I got was $260 with an exedy organic disc, custom rebuilt OEM pressure plate, new throwout bearing and flywheel machining). That was not trade price, was just me walking in off the street and knowing exactly what I wanted. Direct Clutch also have a good rep in QLD, just dont let the apprentice test drive your car... ;)

A few mates in Sydney have recommended Kev at St Mary's Specialised Brake and Clutch, I've only used him for custom brake discs and pads previously, but his clutch gear is just as good and he doesn't charge like a wounded bull in my experience.

Take note that your clutch wont need replacing until about 80,000km if you thrash the car on a regular basis, it seems that the ZZE pressure plate will loose it's spring before the clutch plate gets down to the rivets from what I've seen... That could also have something to do with driving style and if the driver holds the clutch in at the lights/intersections etc...

I work for coventrys auto parts,a TYK6932 exedy clutch retails for $168.00 plus & a HD version costs about 300 plus, with the labour costs & even the extra work done in perth wouldnt have costed 900 or past the grand, even if it was a stivo it wouldnt be that much,I work very closely with the Toyota dealerships apperently it might get to the big G,thats not even flywheel work!!

Im sorry lads..that was an expensive job bruvva
