Toyota Aurion with Varex Mufflers

hmm... that's a strange design, it'll be interesting to what it'll sound like...

the Varex DOES have a half open setting...

Having that much pipe after WON'T reduce sound by much, as it's pretty much straight through...

as for the looks, you can always get muffler tips added.

You won't have a problem with the height from the ground, because if you're putting it where the res. was,

there is a concave spot from where the res is,

You don't need to put a cannon there, X Force has designed a smaller model of the varex and goes before the muffler specifically for twin exhaust cars!

I just didn't go that option, which is much cheaper... coz i really liked the look of two 'flame throwers' on the back of my car! :)

Seca, if you want more performance out of your car, you might want to toy with the idea of reducing your car to two cats!

As stock it has 3!

hope that helps!

DANNY!!! YOU GONNA DYNO YOUR CAR THIS WEEKEND???? WE NEED TO SEE WHAT THE DIFFERENT MODS DO TO THE POWER!!!!

thanks darius... your input on this has been great!

in terms of the looks of it.. doesnt really mean anything... cause it'll never be seen due to the design of the rear bumper on the TRD.

my concern is about the size of the varex compared to the stock resonator...

i've heard the varex mufflers are HUGE... so i doubt it'd fit in the same spot as the stock resonator without hitting speed bumps etc....

i'll hopefully get under the car this weekend and measure things up...

do you have a link to the smaller varex muffler? i cant seem to find any info on it... maybe i'm blind...

yeah, down the track i'll have a look at replacing the full exhaust system with something more performance orientated... but for now, all i'm searching for is the noise...

well, after playing around with the exhaust yesterday and taking different parts off, i've come to the following conclusions:

1) i can safely say that you could easily leave the resonator and take the two rear mufflers and the sound would be as loud as a normal 'hoons' car...

2) running nothing after the cat would result in you getting fined within the first 2mins you're on the road... if there is a cop in a 10km radius from you, they will hear you and come and get you!

3) if you're planning on doing it at home, make sure your neighbours love you!!! lol

4) with only the cats in place and no other sort of muffler/resonator, the car sounds AWESOME!!! much like darius's clips, but about 5 times louder and it had a real bark to it...

we took some clips of the car at different stages, but it was on my mates camera, so i'll have to wait till he emails them to me...

here is the resonator: (looks to be roughly 7" in diameter :o)

here is the cat: (looks to be a fairly decent cat which would flow really well)

here is the merge collector thats look nnnaaasssssstttttyyyyyy!!:

nice one secaboy. I would say there is no point in modding the exhaust of the TRD model, if you do the result could be just plane rice. I suggest you just leave it mate as Toyota already spent so much on R&D to squeeze all the performance and yet give balance to a FWD car. I would have bought the TRD model but around 12 - 15K more it ain't worth it. I would rather get a FPV Typhoon or a GTR.

zr6er: i disagree... the front merge collector can DEFINITELY be improved!!!

also, typhoon is being phased out, so resale would suck. plus the new model being released would have a LOT of issues as all new fords do.

danny: **** man, that really sucks... :(

i'm still looking at my options, so nothing will be happening with mine either...

From what I've felt, if I had a Typhoon I wouldn't be selling it (actually it was a Tornado ute, same thing). I wouldn't want anything quicker on the road. In fact I thought it was sheer overkill (it had a chip and exhaust pack on it). 1/4 throttle on the thing made me push brown.

this one is standard exhaust, dropped from the flanges before the rear muffler

(pretty boring as the sound difference was SFA!)

this one is standard exhaust, dumped at the cat. so no resonator, no mufflers or anything.

these were taken on a phone, so the sound quality isnt that great... the sound from the exhaust was MUCH louder than shown in these clips...

Nah I reckon the resale would be better given the years down the track against a TRD Aurion, As always ford or holden will have a cult following and people would pay on the mid to high range people are expecting to sell these. Especially if you have the FPV badge, GTP's have been sliding towards the collectors showcase.

Agree Ford or Holden have been plagued with issues, but if the FG's are problem free then I think like an XR6T or a G6ET would be sweet, if you can afford a Typhoon with its 300kw+ that would be sweeter.

Your TRD sounds great regardless of whether or not it has the muffler on it. After listening to the second clip, I understand how you want to unleash the true note of the engine. It would be good though to reach a good balance in which you can still hear the whirr of the supercharger at the same time, cause that is a nice sound as well.

Did you look at this pic?

This doesn't look very "squeezed" for performance, it looks like "make it fit"

Car manufacturers do what they do in terms of a package because something like a big scary exhaust would scare off part of the market. Things are always there to be improved sometimes, mainly due to the manufacturers set standards of customer delivery.

Well you guys can do the modding of the exhaust and the cats and I will see what the results are. I am wanting to do the full exhaust or do what Darius did but since no one has fully proven that an aftermarket solution will defintely increase power by more than 5 or more KW than its not worth the upgrade. I am just in a position and a bit sceptical at doing the exhaust. I am no mechanic expert or sadly to say a car modding freak but I am relying on the TOCAU members to make reliable gain on such mods then I will decide where my cash goes.

Its my nature to see if the investment(waste of cash) in doing the mod will actually provide a benefit. I am putting my money on Darius to see what the result is. :whistling: Dyno it mate then I will see if it tickels my fancy

I'm not dissing your plan dude I think it's first class :toast:

I was thinking that particular restriction would cause more loss on the TRD version seeing as it has forced induction, so the returns would be greater for secaboy. It might be fine for the N/A models, you're right.

  • 1 month later...

Just some additional info about the varex muffler on aurion, for some reason, the setup would be illegal. Engine warranty will be void too.

Cant wait to spend my saving on aurion, i went to few muffler/exhaust shops, conclude nothing interest me more than Varex. I called Vic distributor of Varex(same person who did Darius' setup), reasonable price around $1100, but it would be illegal.

Call toyota, explain what i am going to do to my aurion just like was told by the mech, engine warranty will be void too. (you know wat this means..)

I cant confirm yet if the car will be defective if found with this mod, not sure where to ask for correct info..(mayb stop a cop and ask him next time) IF defective, then have to ask insurance what will happen to me in serious accident..

Suggestion is please put more consideration on it.. Good luck to people who is in the same shoe as i m..

Best to check the Product Disclosure Statement of your insurance policy rather than calling them up as the conversation will be recorded and will be dug up when needed - do you really trust that they will turn off the conversation recording mechanism?

The insurance company will not honour the insurance policy on any vehicle that is deemed to be defective - you know that the vehicle is defective and you're driving around in it so you are breaking the law in the first place. No insurance company will cover incidents caused by this as the law has already been broken. The defence would be to claim innocence - I didn't know.

Having said that, there is most likely an exception to vehicles that have been given defective notices whereby the vehicle would still be covered if it was involved in an accident.

The pics of the resonator and the cat a few posts above look to be almost identical to what is on the Sportivo Corolla in size, looks and dimensions.

This is the same situation we had with the Corolla's a few years ago. everyone wanted someone else to do the hard yards and pay for the R and D on an exhaust system. Then whinge about someone actually doing it and having dyno proof. the whinges then turned into "those figures are wrong" etc etc etc etc.

Guys if you want to get something done as far as exhausts are concerned then we have a forum sponsor who specialises in this sort of stuff. I put up the cash and time for the corolla stuff and the gains were great and worth every cent. Instead of talking about it why don't one of you Aurion guys in Brissy go and see CES and ask them to look at the car and see what is feasible as far as gains are concerned.

This is why you should look in other sections of this forum instead of just staying in your own little corner. You'd be surprised at just how much info there is on TOCAU that you can directly relate to your car........
