Cheap oil filters

Just wondering if anyone has used the cheaper oil filters? Supercheap have the Ryco R2648p for $25.99

It seems like pretty simple technology - specially arranged filter paper. I am considering trying a cheaper product. Keen to hear any experiences!

Hi Rodney, you bring up a very valid point about filters. For me, I like to use Genuine Parts where possible if I can get them for the "right" price. Usually dealerships have horrendous mark ups and this then sends us chasing the bargains or cheaper alternatives. Nothing wrong with that at all.
I have to say though, that if anyone pays $25.99 for a Ryco filter, they need to have their head read, because that's a blatant rip off. That's how much a Toyota Genuine Filter would normally cost. I still wouldn't pay that price even for Genuine.

I like to scour the net and Ebay and some time ago, I was able to purchase a carton of Genuine Toyota filters (10 filters) for around $120. Maybe a bit more now with Covid Tax and world going mad Tax. but you get the point.

For roughly $12 a pop I can have peace of mind with a Genuine Part, pay half the price of dealer and auto shop prices and not have to worry about using aftermarket. In saying that, there's nothing wrong with either filter you specified. They are both fine. Just remember to do your oil change frequently. That's the most important thing on the 2GR-FE as it needs clean oil to work properly over time. Slack, lazy or trying to be cheap with oil change intervals will come back to bite you AND it will cost you all the savings you think you had and much more to bring it back.

There is the fake genuine issue, I imagine ebay would be full of them. Having said that I have bought them from there too. I also think the change interval impacts this choice. I replace oil and filter at 5000km so a filter that is not quite as good is probably less important than if i used 15000km intervals.

For a few years, I have been using the cheap oil filters mostly sourced via eBay from a number of different sellers.

Just be aware that filters are cheaper for a reason. There is a YouTube video by Toyota demonstrating the difference in quality of the filter material used compared to a cheap counterfeit copy. The Toyota branded filter was more effective in removing the introduced contaminant than the counterfeit one. They also made mention of the amount of filter material being used. At least you can visually compare the number of pleats between the different brands whether the same as original or fewer.

Main difference that I have noticed is to what extent the filter material resists being compressed in the housing. After use, some filters have a slight twist in their filter material.

I did note that one China brand/manufacturer did specifically recommended that the filter cartridge be changed at 5000 kms.

This suits my purposes because most of my driving is short distance and my oil change interval is every 2-3 months.

Yep, and I have bought some of those too. When something is too cheap, then it's cheap for a reason. I still have one fake complete in box to use as my control for every other batch I have and will purchase. I ended up finding an honest seller from the U.S. of all places and his filters are 100% Genuine.
If you know what to look for. There are many subtle differences, but if you look at a counterfeit off the bat, it will look like the real deal. You really need the two to compare unless you deal with them everyday and can spot the differences immediately. I do recall posting a comparison some time ago to illustrate the two. If you can find that thread or post, maybe you could link it here for continuity.

I did watch that one by The Car Care Nut. He went through several items including the all famous oil filter. 

I don't know how Big Corporations allow these fraudsters get away with blatantly copying and selling their products ?? Aren't they able to do anything ?

Part of the problem is that China often doesn't really recognise international copyright (it's a lot more complicated than that however), and in the case of outright fakes/dupes it can be extremely difficult to even determine who the infringing party is, let alone prosecute them.

Yes I also watched AMD The Car Care Nut's video on counterfeit items and some you can easily see the difference between genuine Toyota and the fakes others gee they are just the smallest things written or the font used so they are really good fakes. I will always go genuine when doing oil services as I consider the peace of mind is worth the money. Things like cabin filters I can live buying the cheaper ones as I change mine fairly regularly I can handle the fact they are not genuine however I always make sure to stick to a few brands that are carbon filters.

One day we will be sitting in our rocking chairs blabbering about the days we had petrol cars and how we looked after them.

Nothing wrong with Ryco filters. They are a specialist filter company so know a thing or two about filters. Just make sure you get at least 25% off at Supercheap or wherever you buy it.

No, not at all. I've used Ryco dozens of times over the years and they are a high quality aftermarket manufacturer. It's just the prices they ask that baffles me. Like you said, you should buy them at special time otherwise you pay full mug retail. Who wants to be treated like a mug ?? Certainly not me.

For the last maybe 5-6 oil changes I've settled on Valvoline VO84 from Bunnings, $15 purchased in store. Can't really go wrong with Bunnings, can you? 🙂 Oh wait...

$7.90 a unit is dirt cheap, I would still prefer to pay double, triple even especially considering how often it gets changed out vs the critical work at stake that being protecting your expensive 2GR motor. Oil & filter are two items one should never skimp on if you expect a long life of the engine.
