question:

Does the 1zz engine (manual) and 2zz engine perform very similar under where lift kicks in i.e. up to about 6100 revs?

as the toyota states the 1zz uses SFI fuel injection where as the 2zz uses MFI fuel injection. (hence the different codes - 1zz- fe and 2zz-ge)

That was my understanding that Toyota designates it's economy engines as FE and performance as GE, If there's a turbo the FE or GE will be split by a T to make it FTE or GTE and if its supercharged it becomes FZE or GZE.

But in answer to your question, I think they would perform roughly the same below 6100rpm.

Yeah I think 1ZZ is right.

Micky T and I have done a few tests where I rev to redline & he shifts before lift, it usually ends up pretty close. We came to the conclusion that the 2ZZ is probably a little bit quicker in the low rev-range too, but whoever gets the jump off the start generally wins.

Also have to consider the different gear ratio's too, similar but I think the 6 speed ratio's are shorter from 1st onwards.

You can't really make a balnket statement like that, as they are two pretty different engines (the 1ZZ has a longer stroke and smaller bore while the 2ZZ has shorter stroke and larger bore, not tomention the different gearboxes). So I suppose it depends on a lot of variables.

Hell no!!!!

ill race any sportivo changing before lift and i am positive that in a quarter mile ill whop!! In saying that im reving to 6500rpm.

The 2zz has less touque thus the 1zz tends to keep up intill 2nd to 3rd gear change when they use lift!!

check the 1/4 mile times. look at 330ft and 660ft times Now take lit out of the equation...

food for thought :P

You're just upset because you dont have lift. Stop bieng so competative...2zz>1zz :D

haha he's right bill... you may be catching STOCK 2ZZ's, doesnt mean your gonna beat em unless u spend a whole lot more money :P

Its ok oh baby 1zz brother ..... when ur old enough and go through puberty and sprout lift you can enjoy low to sub 15 sec 1/4's ;) ;) ;):lol::lol:

Since you pointed out the 1/4, 330ft & 660 ft times in the pinned topic Bill B) B) what you failed to mention is we havent seen a stock 1zz hit the 1/4 so all those times posted are not valid for a direct comparison .... i mean simply compare Daves time (YDOIT4) with SuperDaves time and you can see that even modded vs stock doesnt mean the 1zz will be in front.

The only one valid 1zz vs 2zz comparison on that list is my car vs mintos as we pretty much have the same mods almost and you can see the comparison in those times for yourself ;) ;)

On a serious note these are 2 totally different engines ..... i know the question was asked to make the comparison of 1zz vs 2zz minus lift and my thoughts on this is who ever can get it off the line will come out on top ..... although the 1zz is going to have an extra 300-500 rpm's in each gear to use or more depending on the car if lift kick in earlier ;)

Yeh i know i agree with u bil

But i think an intake and sportivo cat back is hardly 41kws whitch the stivo comes with on top of us!! haah we need a little helping :P

hahah

anyway next drag day (when Xoom has a run) we need to see more of you guys down there so we can fill up the drag times sticky.

Should get some ppl down from melb to come up and pull some times at our track. See differences!!!

what do u think bil?

Fact: The 2zz-GE has lift...why wouldn't you use it when racing anyone lol

Bill stop using lift from now on and let the others catch up.

I have checked this out a fair amount, through performance parts research and whatnot...as xoom pointed out, the best comparison we have thus far going by time slips is mine and his car. I don't think you can compare mods like exhausts and intakes without having had the car tuned, because each motor is manufactured slightly differently and each ECU can be COMPLETELY different. So if you take that out of the equation with a Power FC, it is a more fair comparison i think.

As to answer the question...on paper, a 1zz and 2zz with full exhausts and intakes, with a Power FC, below lift the 2zz is still ahead (about 3nm in torque from memory around 4.5k rpm), but their horsepower is pretty much equal. Also though the torque curves on the 2zz (before lift) and the 1zz are quite different...

Also as 1ZZ-FE said, gear ratios play a very big part. Even if the 1zz and 2zz were dead even output wise below lift, a 2zz with the C51 box would win.

I have never been in a Sportivo with any mods done...only ever driven a stocky a few years back and it didnt impress me...really needed lift to get the SOB going and at the time i wasnt into high rpm driving, so the 1zz seemed like a better deal to me. From how i have seen the 2zz go though..to me (a bias 1zz driver), the 1zz does seem to deliver more torque...its hard to compare the 1zz and 2zz from 1.4 mile times though, even though dynos are unreliable with numbers i think they are a better comparison tool for this topc - dyno day Sydney people???

It didn't impress me either when I got it as well. I was used to low down power and shifting @ 7,000rpm when really going for it in the Escort. You always had power on tap with that thing. The 2zz however is a real performer if you can make effective use of the power band. I can land lift in all gears now after constant practice. I had to reinvent the way I shift in this thing. I have to say that once you've mastered how to handle the 2zz it quickly turns into a very quick b@stard. My first 1st to 2nd gear shift while staying in life eventuated in me all of a sudden doing 100. I shat myself lol.

exactly lol be like a turbo'd car shifting before spooling. no fun :P

i just love hearing the beast open up and waving as i cruise by :D
