    BUSTED!!!

wonder how the camera guy did this though.. maybe those guys in the photos were all his mates :P
  2. I hate torque steer.. LSD or some sort of TCS will help too. The UK Stivos have TCS standard. Actually quite a few FWD cars have them nowadays, the Accord Euro, Astra Turbo etc all have them.
  3. Nice! Love your lowering and rims too, what are they? What have you done to it?
  4. :( Sad fact but true about NA cars especially our highly strung engines. The VTECs also have trouble gaining power (most go backwards either in power/torque or driveability :o ) that's why they have boosted ones. Or else you can always spend big bucks for engine internal mods which will give slightly more gains than all the bolt-ons but still is not the best bang for buck unless you seriously want to remain NA. There are Civic Vti-Rs with Spoon engine internals stroked to 1800cc, plus all the Jap bolt-ons you can find, fully setup for drag/track and ran low-mid 14s consistently. He spent close to $15,000 on parts and his mates all say he it would be much easier to turbo it but his reply was "its easy to make big power boosted, and its not the same fun". So we should all keep this mentality when tuning NA cars, don't expect huge leaps in power or huge reduction in 1/4mile times. ;) But bear in mind guys that a 14.8 and a 15.2 is still a 3-4 car length gap on the 1/4 mile so it doesn't mean there were no gains. And i can bet Dave and Craig can do high 14s consistently, not just a one shot wonder. With some other mods strictly for drag racing they can sure hit low 14s.
  5. Only 1/4 way through my first tank sorry guys :( but i will hopefully be giving it some good booting this weekend and will keep using this petrol for a while so stay tuned for updates if yous interested :P
  6. just like to add that the astra turbo has quite an intelligent traction control system. it can brake the inside wheel when it's spinning to keep traction rather than limiting rpm ;) ← Never knew that Shao, but thanks for adding something positive to the Astra Turbo though :P
  7. I heard about engine mounts affecting performance negatively, i think its on Best Motoring and they tested all JDM hi-performance cars with around 60,000kms. ← how so negatively ← Yeh Craig why? :P I think BM said there deteriorated engine/transmission mounts affect the car's balance.. ie. much more movement in the engine and tranny, engine and tranny sagged (lower down in the engine bay)? Don't know about straight line speed but when running on a racetrack the handling balance was definitely affected. This episode of BM i have is in Jap only with no subtitles so don't take my words for it but they tested a TypeR with close to 60,000kms but on the dyno it still produced the same power as a new TypeR and 1/4mile time was quicker than a brand new by a couple of milliseconds But handling sucked, understeered too much instead of the normal slight oversteer you will see in early TypeRs. *Read on only if you are interested in the rest of the vid andother cars they tested: For those interested they also tested WRXs, GTRs, EVOs, Silvias, Supras, RX7s, and an NSX. Only the 2 NA hi-performance cars had no power loss and no loss in 1/4mile time :D . ALL TURBO CARS loss at least 1/4 of their claimed power output! ALL TURBO CARS needed boost up and new computer to bring output back up to NEW, except the GTR and Supra with more than expected gains after tuning. AWD cars were the worst when it came to wear and tear (surprise surprise..) the WRX broke 2 driive shafts, needed new turbo and cost a hefty amount to REFRESH. The EVO needed new clutch, suspension componets and engine tune but a hose blew itself when they raced the car. The GTR needed new gearbox seals, suspension components, boost up and new ECU tuning but it went on to do a 12.8sec 1/4mile. The Supra they had was low kms and used for the track and only needed slight mods like new brake discs, boost up, better suspension components and was very quick. Silvia needed new suspension components and different LSD. RX7 had boost up and suspension tune, handling was exceptional on track but lacked straight line speed. So if you have the dough go ahead and REFRESH 2nd hand Turbo cars like the GTR and Supra since you can't get them new in Oz. Otherwise better to stick with NA reliability if you are after 2nd hand hi-performance cars ;)
  8. Good try mate but shame on you to even be racing your gf :P , But i don't doubt the fact that the CAI doesn't provide much more straight line if any at all and it doesn't surprise me one bit. I have never been one that claimed the CAI gave me much more power. It's just a pipe and a pod filter right? I got it seriously for the sound and a CAI setup would acheive that plus refrain from sucking hot air like a short ram intake kit would. The pricing i was quoted for a short ram was also around $350 so i got the TRD CAI for $100 more instead. I thnk its too basic a modification to give you really noticeable straight line speed increase. But who knows? Maybe there is an increase in hp but on te street its negligible because of driver skill and all other variables.. But i do really suspect if you install a Unichip on a stock 05' and a Unichip on a 03' Stivo with CAI you will probably see substantially more hp in the 03' Stivo with the CAI. ** :D I see Imek made this point earlier than i did and is on the same chain of thought!**
  9. Hey Bluey, you can get a new clutch kit for as little as $250. Labour i was charged $300. Toyota asked for $600-$710 Just ask Toyota what they adjusted, if they say the pedal height tell them to p11s off, doesn't work i even tried it myself at the track. A Toyota dealership i took the car to said the clutch system is hydraulic so cannot do much but i think is a load of bullocks, some guys here still got it fixed somehow by getting the rod coming out of the master cylinder adjusted, which one dealership also said they did but didn't solve the problem.
  10. True what Egene said, they are all mandrel bent aluminium tubes.
  11. I heard about engine mounts affecting performance negatively, i think its on Best Motoring and they tested all JDM hi-performance cars with around 60,000kms.
  12. Hi there and welcome to the forum. I have a 04' Stivo so cannot comment on the stereo. I like music but i am not someone after the best quality and i find it acceptable. If you have a loud exhaust then you might need bigger/better speakers. Performance wise i don't think a stock Stivo will outrun an Astra turbo from a standing start or on the drag strip. On the track i am confident you can keep up down the straights or out of bends if you keep it in LIFT. Why i'm saying this is because the Astra Turbo has no LSD and is FWD like the Stivo. If he floors it out of a corner he will spin up his inside wheel :D . But the Stivo is not a car you get in and be able to drive it fast (not like the idiot proof WRX). A lot of people here have had them for quite a while and i persoanlly needed almost 1 year to drive the thing better. Partly its because you can't practice driving this thing on the street without landing your bum in a Police station, take it to the track or some mountainous back roads to really DRIVE it! You need certain driving technique / confidence to get the most of the car (most girls/ladies should pass :P no offense). It's an enjoyable car for the money and comfort/reliability/built quality is Jap standard, might not be the quickest in a straight line but i tell you it sure is the most satisfying to drive B) The only thing i don't particularly like is the gearbox and shifter. The H pattern is a mistake for such a narrow powerband car that requires super-quick/smooth shifting and the gear ratios could also be closer for 1st/2nd/3rd gears. But i believe if you driven the Civic Vti-R and bikes you would have liked to rev. This car will suit you fine. Cheers, Z
  13. I find the AEM and Injen have quite similar designs with sharper bends and the TRD has a smoother setup. I don't know about performance but i know gasses and liquids prefer to travel down a smoother path but seriously i think the AEM and Injen works equally well. Also don't forget anything with TRD on it is gonna cost more and rightly so ;)
  14. Do you find it hard to shift quick at normal revs too (eg 3000-5000rpm)? I am thinking it could be stuffed synchros too if it does that. But if its not, get a new clutch kit seriously, you will be really happy once the problem is gone although i must admit the stock clutch is not too bad quality and can take quite a fair bit of abuse. But i had to make a decision because i had the same issues and more and is not good for car and driver i the long run ;)
  15. Maybe new 2006 Corolla bodyshell Back end looks like Mazda3, front end is ok.. don't know about AWD and that engine in a Corolla though ;) Cost is approx AD$55,000 based on that article so not too bad, in the league of STi and EVO. ;)
  16. Cool let me ring the dealership and place my order :P :P :P :P :P ← Lets organise a group buy Bill :P
  17. Stock organic clutch plate, see its still relatively good after 2 trips to Wakefield and 28,000kms.
  18. No more problems with shifter now Bill, 100% fixed. Its now up to the driver to drive it properly :P Check out this thread: My new clutch and flywheel Z
  19. Good to hear no one was seriously hurt, take care on the roads everyone :(
  20. I know some people have paid close to $500 and some closer to $400 due to exchange rates. But if you are also after other stuff from TRD get them together so freight costs will come down a bit. The TRD CAI is a bugger to freight, comes in a BIG box because of the pipe.
  21. The injen is a cool kit, can be used as a short ram intake or full CAI. Good to compare between the 2.
  22. It is made out of metal, I cut mine using a grinder, was not that hard~ ← haha, no cutting of car like what Daniel said, just the bracket that comes with it as the kit was made for the Matrix in the US. Dave used a hacksaw and some muscles, cut it in 5 minutes. :D Z
  23. I'll save you some trouble, if clutch adjustment doesn't work chuck the stock clutch out and get a new one! ;)
  24. how do u know if it is the south african spec or the jap spec rolla ? ← Wow an old thread resurrected! Australia gets SA built Stivo only. My steering still shudders at low speeds and under light braking, hard braking there is no problems. I won't bother getting Toyota to machine it, its gonna warp again. I will just change the discs to slotted ones when time comes to do so.
