  1. Can anyone please explain a bit more on "spin the wheels and slip the clutch." 1. How to do them?? 2. What do they do to make lift landing possible? Thanks :) ← I'm still practicing Cooley :( Having bald tyres will also do it for you :P
  2. Lucio - i used that method in the past when my gear shifter was stuck at high revs and only hitting the rev limiter releases it for me to shift smooth and quick, and i used to land 1-2 LIFT 9/10 times. But what Northy said is also true, hitting limiter can impede the car's forward progression so you can sometimes end up having less road speed than say shifting before hitting limiter. It is a hit or miss thing with the rev limiter. Actually ever since i got my clutch/flywheel/wheels/tyres i only landed 1-2 LIFT once and the tyres never screeched or chirped, just lost traction and you could feel it. Maybe its te tyres or wheel/tyre combo weighing heavier all up compared to the old wheel/tyre. Don't forget the old rims were 16x6 and Turanza tyres look lighter than my yokies now. But anyway i went for a drive again today to practice and i never grind or crunched 2nd today. I never had issues with 3-2 downshifts or any other gears except occassionally 2-3 upshift hen i rushed it. I put it down to me trying to shift too fast with a very firm hand on the shifter, slamming into 2nd. The gearbox has let me know it doesn't like it Now i have a much looser grip and i shift slower, feeling the notchiness, revs usually drop to around 5800-6000rpm each time i tried to upshift at redline. So i just need to find more quiet stretches of road to practice now ;)
  3. A quote i got from NewCelica.org on the C60 6speed gearbox in the Stivo. Thought some newbies would be interested, the 1-2 shift topic has been covered extensively on that forum. So give up that Powershifting technique people! Quote: Originally Posted by the gt-s tranny was defective from the factory. It happens to 90% of us. Its a problem with the 2nd gear syncho's. Reply: I highlydoubt 90% or even 5% of GT-S trannies are defective from the factory. The problem comes from people just trying to shift too fast/hard. You need to wait for the revs to drop down a bit to where they'll be in the next gear before you engage that gear. Otherwise, you'll overwork the synchros (they match gears for you, but only so much) and cause excessive wear. Forcing the shifter into gear only accelerates the wear even more. After too much abuse, they'll just stop working altogether at higher RPMs and you'll grind. Eventually, it will even happen at low RPMs, and you'll need to perfectly rev match to get into that gear. The reason it happens to 2nd so much is because people think the faster you shift, the higher you'll land in the next gear, and 2nd is the only one that's hard to land in lift. Unfortunately, we're mechanically limited to landing at 5800 in 2nd. The only way to bypass this is to spin the wheels or slip the clutch. Shifting speed has nothing to do with it.
  4. practice is all it takes to land lift mate :) keep practicing, but at the same time try to be gentle on the gearbox B) ← I went for a drive today and shifted 1-2 much slower than usual and slipped the clutch a bit more and landed around 5900rpm but didn't grind or crunch 2nd. Did it 3 times same result. I am now trying to practice shifting slower, almost casual, and still land LIFT. Oh and Cooley u will need the TRD fully customisable gearbox to land LIFT :P
  5. Cooley - the new clutch/flywheel fixed my sticky shift issue 100% but 2nd gear crunching i have been getting occassionally from Day 1 of car ownership. I don't have issues with any other gear or downshifting into 2nd. I guess Toyota will probably charge a big premium for labour since they already want to charge $600 labour for clutch installation. Interestingly Toyota dealers in the US has opted to go for a full gearbox replacement rather than muck around with gears and synchros, which saves them time and less risk of other gears or synchros stuffin up down the line. If i need to get it fixed i will be pushing for a new box.
  6. haha good stuff breaking WRX egos.. is your brother gonna sell his turbo awd pride now :P The Stivo is really an n/a 1800cc rocket i must say, just needs to e geared better really for easier LIFT, LIFT, LIFT!.. I think if you landed LIFT 1-2 you would beat your brother's MY05 WRX easy, but then again you guys didn't do a standing start launch which is the WRX's strength and also flying out of corners with awd traction. ← the blue rex certainly didn't fly away from me at any point at track day. in fact i had to back off round the sweeping bends at darlington so i wouldn't run up the back of it. just didn't have enough straight line tho. ← yeh i saw that vid clip Shao, something black and noisy came charging up behind a blue wrx :D i think Wrxs, STI including don't have good mid corner speed, they under.. under.. under.. :P but i think they are evolving all the time and getting better and better. Their best would probably still be full power out of low speed tighter coners and hairpins, just have to make sure the car is straighten and hang on!
  7. Sorry guys i edited my original post, didn't make it clear enough ;)
  8. mayb i need the clutch adjusted again? but my sticky shift is gone though after clutch/flywheel..
  9. Yep they are double cone synchros in 2nd gear.. the rest are single cone.. but i have actually been crunching gears since day 1 on and off.. there have also been articles on the Celica and they say " the gearbox doesn't invite u to push it hard, if u do u beat the synchros and miss shifts".. Wheels 1999? DC5 TypeR has tripple cone synchros in 2nd and 3rd fyi..
  10. I have combed through NewCelica.org and our forum and i have no doubt this is a problem in majority of Celicas and Sportivos alike utilising the C60 6 speed gearbox. A lot of guys in the US have replaced gearboxes (some up to 3 times and some under warranty) or got new 2nd gear synchros. Does anyone have a price on these from Toyota Australia? As for my Stivo, it drives ok when shifting slowly but when you try to rush a 1-2 shift it crunches. I used to be able to rush the shifter in but seem not able to do it anymore or as often as before. I don't think its my driving because i tried having the clutch pedal fully depressed and rushing the shifter from 1st to 2nd but still wouldn't go into 2nd. I almost have to shift smooth like holding the shifter less tightly and letting it click in rather than grabbing the stick and jamming it into 2nd. All other shifts no problems except 1st to 2nd. The thing is i used to be able to shift really fast all the time, now i can't. I change my gearbox oil almost as often as i change my engine oil so i don't know if that has an impact. I use Castrol Syntrax 75W90 full synthetic and Nulon G70 additive. I don't think its the tranny fluid but i might be trying other brands of tranny fluid soon and getting Toyota to diagnose but don't think they will find/replace anyting cuz it "drives alright under normal operating conditions". Maybe i will just have to wait for it to keep deteriorating before seeing Toyota, hopefully before the warranty expires. Thanks guys/girls, Z
  11. tuning was done through S Rally in Sydney ← Ahh.. is that why you came to Sydney! btw Northy did you purchase your PFC through S Rally as well or you just got it tuned there?

  13. Hmmm, unless the driver is a complete ******, just about any new V8 will take the stivo to the cleaners, if they are auto, you have more of a chance so long as you dont mind thrashing the clutch and tyres to get the launch needed to compete with their low end power. Amusingly, in my neck of the woods, the only people who will ever give me a go is V8s, cause they know they will spank me - havnt beaten one yet Damn i want a V8... :( ← You will be very surprised by the result up to 4th gear.. i ran 2 BA XR8s and both times i lost but stuck right up behind them. In 1st gear even without a launch i was neck and neck with the BA XR8 off the line.. it was an auto i think. Commodores i have taken the 220kw and 225kw versions, both autos i think, and i beat 1 auto and lost to another (by a front bumper distance, and if i had more road i would pop into 4th and believe will take the win).
  14. I had same problems, they also said might be tyre quality but when they looked at my tyres its Yokohama C.Drive and immediately said can't be that.. they then did "Probase" wheel balance where they buffed the hubs, remove tyres and refit, rebalance. Still didn't fix the problem. Then they decided to do the on-car wheel balance where they take it to 120km/h where my balance problem was.. after that the car felt better BUT the most significant improvement came when Toyota machined my brake discs. They obviously had to remove the front wheels, and brake discs and calipers.. after that was done wallah, PERFECT!
  15. also remember our 2zzge motors are much newer and probably in better condition than most of the grey imports so pick on someone your own age :P i still love picking on BA XR8s and newer V8 Commies.. especially autos! They are just slow off the mark even with 3 times more torque than the Stivo :D
  16. fitted/tuned was bit under $2500AU ← Great stuff Northy.. how i wish i had a PowerFC today :( tried to shift quick and ended up crunching 2nd gear again.. i'm getting the ****s now with the gearbox.. could have shown the auto BA XR8 who's boss.. must feel great to have LIFT cut in at 5800rpm though same as VTEC, u won't even need to raise the redline then and should be able to land LIFT sooo comfortably now.. how envious :(
  17. I don't know the exact build date of the 05 model stivos but there is 2 different verions of stivos built in 05. ZZE123R 92 which was built before april ZZE123R 5Y which was built after april. (not long after that article it seems) So possible we do allready have this stivo ? can anyone confrim this ? ← These are both very interesting points, would Toyota SA really spend the extra time effort and hassle of having different powered vehicles for different markets when it is one of the lower volumes of the range, doesn't make sense to me. So to backup 02Rollas question: Is the described car already here? ← I believe if it was it would have been marketed in Australia like what the South Africans did with theirs. How about a pre April 05' built benchmark with a post April 05' built Stivo ;) . The different engine characteristic should be very easy to tell.
  18. News today is that it might hit $2.00 and beyond
  19. I think rumours were on the UK built EP3 Civic TypeR, but exchange rates weren't favourable :(
  20. There have been a few more Stivos around where i live now, maybe because i have been racing all the V8s, WRXs and hot fours around my neighbourhood :P and people are saying Wow, a Corolla goes hard and trading in their cars for it.. and its only 1800cc hence cheap on fuel and not to mention the bonus when they find out their insurance premium! :D
  21. In the UK, it sells for around 22k Euros (mate of mine in the uk bought one for 18.5k) which is just under $30kAUS. Being produced in Swindon, England... by the time it gets here, who know's how much it'll cost on top of other costs as well. Yeah A/C is optional for some reason, price issues maybe. The newer 2005 model have a lighter flywheel (30% lighter if i recall correctly). If they can settle it around the 35k mark over here, i don't see why people won't buy it, now that the Corolla Sportivo has ceased production... doesn't leave too many options. It's hard (wrong?) to judge a car based on its value without driving it and just looking at paper figures. From the numerous reviews i've read and seen in the hot hatches market, the type r always ends up a clear winner. Surely that means something doesn't it? I'm not judging anything here of course. But who knows, this may be useless to us as it may not get imported at all. ← I think they would opt to bring in the Euro vesion for a few reasons like what they did to the Integra TypeR -> Integra TypeS.. targets a bigger audience and market. The most crucial factor for me is price, if it does come to Oz.. i'll be waiting! ;)
  22. I actually find that the driveability has improved post recall (although i have TRD CAI and TOM's flywheel), especially around 3500-4500rpm there is heaps of torque for overtaking but still in certain situations you can get stuck. The lightweight flywheel improves throttle response too and i find it quite good to drive. Also will depend on what sort of traffic and roads you drive on, i am usually on the freeway, clear traffic and very seldom encounter traffic jams.
  23. Did you watch a video of a race between the Civic Type R and that Pulsar? It was in japanese of course, but a test on the track between the 2 cars. The pulsar ended up winning... i think u did :P ← Yeh mate it's Best Motoring and was like 5-6 years ago when i was driving a Civic :D The Pulsar VZR-N1 version smashed the stock Civic TypeR but they ruled the matchup unfair because the Pulsar was over-priced and tuned to race specs with super close gear ratios etc. So they brougt in a SPOON tuned Civic TypeR and won back the "King of 1600cc" stature. And for the price of the Pulsar VZR-N1 version in Japan, SPOON can built a Civic TypeR with the Integra TypeR's 1800cc motor, that car bloody flies, up hill! Man i miss my Civic, used to have big plans for it (either B16A2 conversion or turbo) untill i traded it for something else :(
  24. This has been talked about quite a bit before about the Pulsars. The SSS stock is nothing compared to modern cars/engine technology nowadays. They "were" quick bcuz of their weight/power/torque but its nothing special now. The Pulsar that really impressed me was the Pulsar VZR N1 version in Japan which makes 147kw (200bhp) from 1600cc, redlines at 8500rpm and killed the EK Civic TypeR but was a limited run and much more expensive than TypeR. The also have a VZR version making "just" 180bhp (135kw) from 1600cc. And of course the AWD turbo Pulsar Gti-R but these never made it here except now they have greys. There really is no comparison if you say stock vs stock. I raced against a modified NX Coupe which has the SSS's SR20 and 1st gear up to 6000rpm we were side by side then LIFT kicked in and i was away. Then if you say modified well there are way too many modified cars out there quicker than the Stivo and Pulsar ;)
  25. Someone talk to this guy's boss and get hme to pay a better wage than $230 a week!! Come on, waitering earns more than that! You can also get S13 or 180sx but check for oil leaks. btw i pay almost $1200 with NRMA insurance with 65% ncb , i'm 23 :(
