Stu doesn't like that idea at all. I mentioned it to him on Thursday night. The 5s and 1mz comes from a camry so in reality if you can fit one you canfit the other. But maybe the 5sge or even a 3sge however 3sge would probably cost more. And if you can find a gen4+ camry 5speed, it would be easiest. On the other hand if you aren't going for huge torque then the 4 banger gearbox could work and is cheap too. Mick wouldknow more about them.

lol if you can fit a 5sgte, you can fit a 1mz since they are both from Camrys. :P The E153 are available on the V6 Camrys, GT4 Celicas and the MR2. If you get the MR2 you will need to mod the selectors input to the other side of the box to run it as fwd. The GT4 needs a bit more work but you can block it off and make it a fwd too. Too much power to the front wheels? Pffft! 540hp at the front wheels is still drivable as proven by Tonythetiger :P

Did we plant a little seed about this? When I did the manual swap it was $600 being fairly rare to find. But this was done through "city parts" where they are like agents and source it for you so it may cost more this way.

You can buy the normal handheld code readers for our model camry. They aren't full obd2 compliant. You need the special ones that the mechanics or toyota ones which costs thousands. And just to clarify Limp mode doesnt make your car slow to a crawl, you will still be able to drive on highways and stuff. (I had to do this for 500km to and from the national meet - still can travel at 100km/h+ due to broken knock sensor) I'd take it to the mechanic and ask them to read the code. It'll let you know what is wrong and then work from there. If it is something related to what he fixed then he should be doing it for free or at a substantial discount.

The lack of power would be from the engine going into limp mode once the check engine light (cel) turns on. However this doesnt switch the engine off as it was design for you to "limp" home (runs very rich and limits you to less than 4k rpm). I too think it's more of a fuel issue because even if one of the plugs/injectors stuffs up, the car will still run just quite horribly. If it is the fuel filter/s (we have 2) then it'll be about $200 + labour or so to fix. However did you say the car was fine until the last service? Is he your regular mechanic? I'd call the mechanic up and tell him whats going on. Otherwise go to another mechanic. Toyota will charge you an arm and a leg to fix. V6 plug replacement is a pain in the ***** and will take some time so it will be expensive.

If your head unit is a brand specific plug then cut the harness and join all the wires up before fitting into the car, so when you are actually installing it all you need to do is plug in both ends.
