I just flew home from Perth last night. I had 2 weeks in Donnybrook with my Newlywed daughter. I would ever say that DB is the hub of WA but some excursions down to Margaret River and beyond really were a treat. Truly a fantastic place to have a holiday. Anyone contemplating a trip will not be disappointed.

  4. I must disagree with you on the styling thing. I have always been a Ford devotee and also owned an AU (The ugliest of them). I for one am very impressed with the styling of the Aurion and think they are a real head turner depending on the color. If you want to know which engines are the most reliable ask at a wrecking yard to find out. The most popular engine sold at at one yard in Brisbane is from the Commodore. They sell as many of them as they can get. They dismantle most late model cars and if you look in their scrap bins you will see many Falcon sixes and Camry fours primarily because they rarely need to be replaced. Ask at any taxi company what is the preferred car for them and they will in most cases tell you the Falcon or Toyota Camry/Aurion is the way to go if you want reliability. I absolutely have to agree with this. To pay in the mid thirties for a car off the showroom floor is about standard for an average car these days. The Falcons may be worth in the low to mid twenties in about two years. The Commodores will be worth a couple thousand more but the Toyotas will still worth a few grand more than that. The reason I would be staying with Ford is that I prefer rear wheel drive vehicles and the road feel and handling is in my opinion better for my driving style. I just don't like front drive cars.
  5. Not sure what you mean but a picture may help if you need something. As for rofl I had to give that up a long time ago. BTW welcome to the club. The SV-21s are still a very popular and reliable car. Even my mother-in law found it hard to kill hers. That took an inattentive driver in another car to end it's useful lifespan.
  6. I don't think anyone said that we're only using the side mirrors. When changing lanes, I've always used the inside mirror, the outside mirror and looking over my shoulder. But, the 2011 Camry has much more restricted vision than the 1994 Camry that it replaced. The windows are smaller and higher (particularly the rear window and the rear passenger windows), the seats, headrests and pillars are larger, blocking vision and making the mirrors more important. The convex mirrors give a distorted and out-of-focus view. The flat mirrors were much safer. As for the convex mirrors having a broader field-of-view, I don't mind moving my head if I need to see more. Reversing is much safer with flat mirrors than the distorted view from convex mirrors. My daughter bought an i20 Hyundai which had them on both sides and I would have gladly broken at least the drivers side one to have a flat mirror fitted but thankfully the car is now in W.A. I have been a truck driver for many years and never saw the need to have them on the ones I drove. I had a small blind spot mirror attached to the mirror close to the body to see anything outside the normal field of vision and this worked just fine. Steve, Just scratch an X across the mirror and tap it with a screwdriver. Then have it replaced.
  7. I've not owned a Black car of any type but the ones I have been in soon cool off with the aircon going. Lighter coloured cars seem to hide the road grime as do Silver vehicles. I think the Silver Aurions look AWESOME even though I don't own one. Check Page 13 of this thread. This is true class
  8. It was on the way back from Sydney to Brisbane July 2008. My son and I had a trailer with the 18RG and gearbox and a couple wheels and tyres. We got to Armidale at about 10:30pm where the road north through Guyra was snowed out. We drove east on the Grafton road and ended up at Raleigh. That road was narrow and with patches of black ice over the surface was a real challenge to drive. Have a look on Google Maps. It is really twisty. Ahead of us was a guy in a hurry driving a BMW and we just stuck with him all the way. It took us just over 2 hours 20 to get there and ended up getting home to Brisbane just after 4am Never want to take the long way again. But then we had little choice
  9. I would not be waiting till next month. If there is a problem it may cause a fire or at least other damage to harness and other stuff.
  10. Not sure about yours but some cars (Mazdas) do have an idle solenoid attached in the linkages on the carby. When the car is in gear it engages and lifts the idle rate by a few hundred revs. I don't know if they would be still available though. Maybe call a Transmission specialist or possibly a carby expert. Hope you find a solution
  11. You won't find too many better products than Moreys. I have only used the heavy oil stabilizer as engine assembly lube but will always recommend their stuff. Looking great.
  12. Where do I begin? 1977 - Renault R10 – Ugly but cheap first car. (Burgundy.) 1977 - HK Monaro – 186S 4 speed Opel gearbox that I kept breaking second gear. (Mako Blue) 1978 -HQ Kingswood - 202 4 speed with A/C Power steering. Otherwise stock. (Juniper Green) 1979 - 75 TD Cortina – 250 with 2v head and big Holley - 4 speed. 85,000 KM in 2 years. (The fuel bill kept me broke) (Tropic Gold.) 1981 - XY Falcon Wagon – Fitted with a 250 cross flow engine. Used it to move from Cairns to Mackay in 82. (Copper Bronze) 1982 - 74 Mazda 929 Wagon. Work pig. Heaps of rust. (Army Green. ) 1983 - 75 Mazda 929 Wagon. Transplanted Engine, Gearbox, Front end and Interior from previous car to have a non rusty car. (Purple. ) 1984 - 81 Mazda 626 sedan – Really reliable. It went heaps better after I blocked the exhaust gas recirculation tube and removed the vanes from the air pump. (White) 1985 - 79 Mazda 626 sedan. My worst car ever. The dealer had filled the engine with STP or Wynns or some stop smoke stuff. After the first service it blew heaps of smoke so I sold it cheap. (Yellow) 1988 – 1985 Mazda 929 sedan. Really great cruise car but I owed my dad some money from our house deposit and surrendered it to him. (White) 1989 – 1980 Fairlane Auto. This taught me a great lesson in never lending your car to someone to do a long trip. It came back with the engine cooked. Valve stem seals were melted and splattered all over the top of the head. Plug lead ends burnt off too. From then everything went wrong. I ended up parting it out. (Hermitage red) 1994 – XE Falcon 4.1 - 4 speed. It was all bogged up and turned out to be only worth selling for a speedway car. (Beige) 2001 – 2000 AU Falcon sedan. This had been a Special Order Vehicle from Metro Ford. Lowered Sport Suspension and XR6 engine. Mods included some wheels, Spoiler, Stereo and custom sheepskin seat covers all around. Yes it was possibly the most hated car on Aussie roads for many years but we never had any major problems with it in 8 years. (White) 2001 – 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage. Absolutely the most reliable and economical car I ever owned. (White) 2008 - 1977 RA 28 Project car previously mentioned. (Blue) 2009 – 2005 BF Falcon – We had a few teething problems with brakes staying on but that was an easy fix for Brakes plus in Springwood. (White) 2011 – 1977 RA28 Project car because the other one would cost more to get repaired and have the rust cut out. (Multi Colored) There were a few I bought for parts and wrecking but non worth adding to this list. Next car will definitely not be White. SO over it.

  14. That's probably because they have better roads. Now to Brisbane.... Logan road Between Garden City & Springwood. The traffic lights seem to be timed so you get stopped at 90% of them. Drive 400m - STOP Drive 600m - STOP Drive 500m - STOP Drive 800m - STOP Drive 200m - STOP And so it goes Why why why. I Think I know. Red light/speed cameras.

  16. This is a common problem. The original alternator was designed to have a regulator which in some cases performs a certain function. Often people will see an alternator that looks the same as their original unit and fits the same but the reg is programed differently. If you still have the original one it will be necessary to match the O/E part numbers to get the right unit to suit the vehicle. Cheers
  17. I would recommend a decent tacky gear grease that will 'string up' as the gears work with each other.. A multi-purpose grease is just not good enough for winch gears. Maybe all someone like Shell, BP or Caltex 1300 tech advice lines for the best recommendation. I must say you don't do anything by halves.
  18. +1 Except I find that the vacuum didn't particularly effective at picking it up on it's own. I usually have to pick it up by hand off the carpet. I've had the "it's just a car" statement before. Was not exactly pleased considering I had just spent ages cleaning it. Yeah it truely is a biatchh! and yeah your right the vacuum cleaner does struggle to suck it up so your try for a second then give up and pick it up and drop it down the cleaners hose. HOW do they loose so much though lol Go to your wife/mum's ironing cupboard and 'borrow' her lint roller. The best ones are the cheapies ($4-5)that are like a small paint roller with inside-out masking tape squares you tear off. Easily solves the carpet hair mess. As for chips - AAAAAAAAGGGGHHH. Maybe eat in at Maccas to avoid the drive through.
  19. Me too! I just re-do my login and that seems to work. You may have to wait a few seconds and re-load the page from the start I use Mozilla for the best results but it logs you back out if you use the 'go back' button
