Most likely a belt squeal, probably needs tightening or possibly replacing.

Drain the oil into a clean container and look/feel for any metallic residue. Using a clean container will allow you to re-use it if it is fine and you can't afford to do an oil change. Sounds very much like a synchro issue to me.

I wouldn't let either touch any of my cars with a 10 foot pole, get a decent private mechanic and you will be much happier.

Take it to an auto-electrician, the fault is more than likely in the switch.
