Hi Guys....

This is a dead set winner!

I've just completed this myself today and i am EXTREMELY happy with the results.

What you're doing is replcaing the Rubber Shifter bushings from the selector arms on the gearbox with a solid peice. This eliminates all the play and "soggyness" in your gear selcting and shifting in general. After you've done this mod, you'll confidently be able to shift fast.. and by the feel you'll absolutely know when you're in gear and ready to drop that clutch. It give a more direct, snappier feel to your shifting.

WHAT YOU NEED.

1. 2 Skateboard Bearings... go to your local skate store.. they usually sell single bearings... ensure you get the "sealed" type. if you are near a bearing shop buy SKF bearings 608ZZ is the size you need. these should cost no more than $5 ea.

2. Washers...

4 X Metal washers must have a bigger diameter than the bearing.

2 X rubber washers, get from plumbing section required to reduce vibration between metal surfaces

2 X Nylon washers I used these as i needed to build up space between the washers... made everything fit VERY snug which i preffered.

3. Tools.

Screw Driver, Phillips or flat will be fine

Pair olf Pliers

Sorry for the lack of pics guys but i'll be as descriptive as i can.

Crack open the Bonnet and locate your catch can and remove it. There's two metal clips holding two hoses onto the top of it. grab your pliers and loosen them, slide the clip up the pipe a little clearing the fitting on the can and slide off the hoses. Once the catch can is removed you have clear access to the linkages.

Locate your linkages. They'll look a little like these (ones pictured here are mine AFTER the mod had been completed.. so expect your washers on top to be a little dirtier.

Doesnt matter which linkage you do first, i started with the horizontal one.

Remove the metal clip, (dont lose it!)

Once removed there will be a metal washer on top, this comes off and you will see the rubber bushiing you are about to replace.

Slide the selector cable containing the rubber bushing off the metal pin fixed to the selector arm.

Once the cable is clear of the pin, grab your screwdriver and us it to lever out the rubber bushing from the shifter cable end. it can be a bit stubborn but once out it should look like this

once you have the bushing out it will be pretty clear what to do... but incase you're a massif n00b...

Go drive and feel that sweet direct shifting feel!

Note: if you're too lazy to go to bunnings to buy all the required peices

Done !

This in conjunction with new gearbox oil, Castrol Syntrax 75W90 fully synthetic, Nulon G70 and toyota cheking all was fine with clutch etc...slight adjustment made i think and its a diferent car to drive........

Toyota also mentioned my gearbox was overfull !! which wouldnt help with trying to change gears and from what they can tell as far as car history and services this was from factory it was overfilled

Did this on the weekend.

Total cost $13.50 (and I have left over washers to fix my leaky tap in the laundry!!!!!)

I must admit, I was shocked at the difference this made. Easy as, cheap, and it works. Cheers for that BKS.

mate it doesnt make it silky.. its just more direct... you can feel the gear going in and coming out into the neutral gate... it gives a very positive feel!

has anyone just bought the gear selector and cradle bushings from TWM Performance. planing on ordering a set in 2 weeks time when i get back to sydney. just wanna know your thoughts and if they fit the stivos?

I have the cradle bushings. fit perfectly and much less flex. wish I got the cable bushings though :(

You can purchase these shift cable bushings through Nengun from C-ONE as well. The part # is CG3382-ZT231.

Just did the cable bushings tonight and I must say it shows how badly I need a gearbox oil change. Getting into 1st, 3rd, 5th is for some reason alot harder to get into. But now I can land 1st to 2nd, but not 2nd to 3rd near redline :huh:

But I really like the feeling going into gears. Really direct. Perfectly complements the short shifter and cradle bushings.

Plus it only cost me 5 bucks :D . Got each bearing for 2 bucks :D

From any skate shop. Fits perfectly as bks said. Find a store that sells them individually and tell them they're not for skateboards otherwise they'll try to make you buy some expensive bearings like they did to me. I had know idea what they were saying :huh::lol:

From any skate shop. Fits perfectly as bks said. Find a store that sells them individually and tell them they're not for skateboards otherwise they'll try to make you buy some expensive bearings like they did to me. I had know idea what they were saying :huh::lol:

Just so you know... I'd be avoiding cheap nasty bearings... some of them fail laterally.

i havent had any fail on me with the shifter kit... but skateboarding i have def ruined a few.

I'm not 100% sure, but places like CityBeach often have a section in their stores that sell skateboards, and often have all the equipment to go with them. Maybe they will have the bearings your after? If not, I'm sure someone from Sydney will be able to lead you in the right direction.

Ok. Just thought i'd add my 2cents. first off, Great DIY post BKS. Glad to see some new technical stuff being added these days. Secondly; if you're going the skate bearing route, like And1 said, no need to buy the expensive bearings i.e ABEC rating from 1-5, 5being better than 1. they don't mean squat for our application so don't bother buying the expensive stuff. the higher the rating, the more precise the bearing and the faster the skates will go.

Good call mate, you are 100% correct, dont waste your coin peoples, I spent a total of about $13 for all parts I think it was.

One thing to be aware of with this mod though guys and girls, I found after about a week, I started talking differently and wearing my hat off to the side, I have also developed an overwhelming urge to 'grind' the handrails on the stairs at work . . . Never mind, maybe its just me. :rolleyes:

I heard my name???

The TWM stuff for the corolla fit the stivos perfectly and is only worth paying for if you are ordering the SS at the same time. The bushing would then be included at 20USD each set (40 all up) should you choose that option. Mind you that the most expensive part of this exercise is the shipping as it is coming from Canada.

Ordering the SS would include every kit and kaboodle you need to replace your stock one (without the bushings. That is extra).

Like I said, if you are just ordering the bushings, not worth paying for postage. Just do BKS's DIY.

The shift assembly bushing won't do or feel squat unless you have the SS.

Just my 2 cents ;)

P.S. I love my TWM SS. Feels good shifting. Oh, you might want to consider a weighted gear knob as some would consider it too stiff (the shifting) :D

you clearly dont understand about what i was suggesting about the quality of the bearing.

better quality Bearings wont Blowout LATERALLY. I know the rolling quality of the bearing doesnt means squat and perfectly spherical balls wont make a difference. but at least spend some money on a decent brand.. not a decent skate brand... a decent bearing brand.

Yellow pages will tell you where your bearing shops are and the size you want is 608zz

That is why it would be best to buy from a skate store. Even their cheapest bearings have to be able to support a certain lateral load from the rigours of skate boarding, which are definately higher than the purpose we are using them for. Hence why you could get really cheap ones from a skate shop.
