  1. Hey, Mish. I'm interested in the 2nd round of group buys. is it too late to be added to the list?
  2. Too bad the sun goes down so early this time of year otherwise i'd do it after i got home from work. hehehe
  3. I disagree. If that is the way we all thought then no progress will ever be made. H3ll, we'll still be driving around in massive push-rod ute engines...oops sorry Holden I all for R&D and trying new things. Imagine if Toyota never experiment with TVIS in the 80's or Audi never experimented with Quatro?!? beter yet, imagine some bloke never tried sticking a steam engine into an Ox cart 100years ago, we'd all still be walking. If you look up progress in the dictionary it mentions forward movement, development and improvement, you won't see technology in there..... I'm in favour of progress, got nothing against horses but no thanks and above all I love practical engineering to meet real needs. I'm NOT in favour of technology for its own sake, (solar powered apple peelers and so on) nor fashion, fads or gimmicks. I never proposed a return to overhead valves though their only technical limitation is a tendency to float at excessive revs, the sorta revs most normal drivers can't use on the street. I better not mention that an engineering mate of mine told me that they are taking another look at sidevalve engines....... The steam engine was a brilliant bit of progress we agree on that at least. A young apprentice I once knew had a terrible hankering for a 5 litre v8 VK commodore. He said it was all about performance but he knew the insurance companies would crucify him. I told him to get a 3 litre VL instead, vastly more efficient than the old iron V8 thing yet similar performance and the insurance companies wouldn't bother him. He didn't like my suggestion............... What he was REALLY chasing was fashion. A 5 litre V8 was the only toy to be seen in at the time, thats what was cool and gave him street cred and so thats what he got. Nowadays to be somebody you gotta have all the gadgets, hitech rools Having a two litre SOHC 8 valve Starlet is NOT gonna give anybody street cred, it might go hard and your grandmother could drive it but lacking VVTIXYZ its a dorkmobile, end of story. I'm sure the dictionary wouldn't mention technology in the definition of "progress". But in the context of our discussion i think it's pretty relevant. I totally agree. I think alot of the so called "advances" in the automotive industry are fads repackaged by marketing. Alot of the times things are done differently just so that marketing has something to say in the TV ads. But once-in-a-while, from a technological - and for the sake of your argument - practical stand-point, there are some true advancements made. For example, Ferrari came up with a very simple and effective valve timing system involving a sliding cam-shaft, then Honda and toyota followed with a dual cam setup which is really a tradeoff between torque/HP but my favourite is BMW's valvetronic system which allows for infinite variability and is an honest "best of both worlds" claim.
  4. Spotted Bill at Pancakes On the Rocks at N Parra. Not the car, just Bill :P
  5. is there any particular reason why you want this done? I'm just curious. sound deadening adds weight and you may not get the desired result as there is still quite a bit of road noise coming from the underbody of the car. Also, what kind of sound deadening materials are you planning on using?
  6. 2ZZ-GE's utilise a timing chain rather than a belt which makes the car sound rather deisel-like when running. At the end of the day, you know your car best, if you think something sounds out of the ordinary, insist on it being checked out. It's under warranty so it's your right to get it fixed. Cheers :)
  7. yer i agree...Mikey ... why cant u drive the rolla?? im sure if u got an old car u would get the ****s cause your too use to the rolla and end up drive it anyway. :D my parents believe that the car is worth a little to much for me to drive at first, im not feeling confident enough yet anyway iv never driven the manual yet, but iv done some hours in a auto how hard is manual?? any1 got any pointers for me :) It sounds to me like you're the exact opposite of a hoon. You think a little too much about driving and the thought of a "prang" seems to bother you a little too much. You're too worried to drive your new car around and you actually care about the car's wellbeing. I seriously don't know what you're worried about. with that attitude, the only time you'll get into an accident is if you're totally unco' and even then it'll be minor. you can't get into a car expecting the worse man. Just have confidence in your ability but don't get too cocky and you'll be fine.
  8. If you're in Sydney try Carmate on woodville rd, Villawood or Autojoy on Church st Parra. You can also buy them off ebay.
  9. tyre wear will also affect the speedo accuracy. As your tyres wear, the rolling diameter reduces which makes your speedo read faster. the difference in diameter between a new tyre and a worn one can be as much as an inch. So if you were running 215/40 17 tyres, an inch would approximately equate to an additional +4% inaccuracy.
  10. imagine you had a flat battery from leaving the lights on. Or better yet, you parked over some rocks or a speed hump, imagine the scratches on the door when it goes under the car. LOL
  11. Thanks Xploshun. Considering you already got yours on the last group buy, i really really appreciate the effort. I owe you a beer :D

  13. Mate. I agree with bits of everyones argument. The main point i will make is don't get something that will require you to have your head under the bonnet every weekend. a small engine sensible car is the best choice. I drive with abit of spirit but as long as you have some restraint you won't get yourself into any situation that will put you in any danger. I had a 89 Celica as my first car and believe me when i say i spend the value of the car fixing things that broke (wear & tear related). "Prang in's" are the least of your worries. Insurance, running cost and maintainance should be on the top of your priorities. Like OZROLA said, if you don't drive like a complete idiot you don't have to worry about prangs. I got my Celica when i got my P's and had the car for 3 years. In that time, i learnt a hell of alot about general maintainance and servicing of cars. i had 1 accident that cause no structural damage to mine or the other car (the other guys bumper needed to be clipped back on - insurance company charged me $600 for it ) getting your first car is like a spiritual event, so choose sensible and choose wisely. Good luck matey
  14. I'd say, because the GPS satellites rely on the accuracy of an atomic clock, the speed reading on your Tom Tom is going to be more accurate than your car's speedo.
  15. All the engines you talk of are small capacity engines with the same capacity to do work. If they produce more peek specific horse power then they are bound to produce less torque down low. Like what rolla boy said; low running cost, less pollution, and fuel efficient is the way of the future. That way we can drive around in cars and still have bunnies and panda bears roaming around at the same time forests with real trees and real fresh air.
  16. I've owned an 89 Celica. you'll be looking at a late 80's - early 90's model for that kind of money. The celica will handle better straight out of the box and you'll feel sportier. The corolla will be more practical and has modding potential. The celica: 80's model = 3S-FE 2.0ltr engine (ST model with 89Kw and rear drum brakes) or the 3S-GE 2.0ltr engine (SX model with 100Kw and 4 wheel disc brakes.) 90's model = 5S-F3 2.2ltr engine (100Kw but with more torque than the 3S engines) The Corolla: 80's model = 4A-FE engine (don't know much about these corollas), also available witht the 20V engine.

    2000GT

Most roadster/sports-cars of that era had the driver seat pratically on the rear axle. I like that look, it's very vintage. It always reminds me of the e-type Jag. If you look at the wheel base relative to the Esprit S4 you'll notice they are about the same. I'm guessing engineers of that time tried to offset the weight of the front-mount engine by seating the driver as far back as possible. I imagineiIt would be a weird feeling driving as the nose rakes around the corner way before the driver feels the inertia of the turn. anyway, that's a beautifully maintained example of the 2000GT.

    Cancer

:o thank goodness they found it early. The main thing is that your mum is ok now and the worst is over. A close friend of my mum just recently had the same thing happen to her. She got it removed right away and she's recovering now. I hope your mum feels better soon. :)

    Stivo rims

As long as they are 4 x 100 stud pattern, they'll fit. those look like 14" wheels. you'll have to make sure you are running the same rolling radius to ensure your speedo is still accurate'ish.
  20. That's a really sweet deal. Considering it's only $5,500 more than what the Corolla Sportivo cost new. Not only that but you get a V6 with Sportivo trim.
  21. Yikes :o that looks like a very expensive lesson.
  22. Awesome! I'm as excited as a schoolboy at Disneyland now!
  23. You've got to be kidding me! this is the stupidest thread ever. who are these ppl that come up with this cr@p?! i was awake and watching 9/11 as it unfolded. i saw the second plane hit live on TV. All these conspiracy theories is not unlike sherlock holmes trying to figure out what a particular smell is in a room by analysing the air molecules when all you have to do is turn around to see the pile of sh!t on the middle of the living room floor. This is all nonesense and the world has gone MAD! See what too much X-File does to everyone? My mum was right - too much TV rots your brain!
  24. Where can i get my hands on those rear pods? they're perfect?
