  1. It makes you appreciate those that make the effort to report back and advise what the end solution was and say Thank You. I do not mind helping anyone who ends up contributing to the knowledge base of this Forum. I learn and re-learn so much from this Forum.
  2. You have demonstrated to us the limitation of those aluminium housing removal tools. When the going gets tough, that is when you need the right professional quality tools.
  3. Also do not underestimate a 2.4 litre Camry being driven by a mama bear with an injured cub going for medical assistance. She told me later that she would have been doing 100kph. I reckon that she would have been giving the OEM rotors and brake pads a good workout in those circumstances. One of my boys was wicket keeper at a Saturday match. Not wearing a helmet that day when he stopped a fast ball with his mouth. 2 front teeth knocked clean out. All ended up ok compliments of a family friend who was a retired dentist, happened to be available and able to access what he needed at his old practice to put the teeth back in. Also hospitals were useless because all the necessary dental equipment was behind locked doors until Monday. Lots of ways you can mess with the entitled. ex-wife was telling me about what she did to a truck that was barrelling along a back road bullying cars to not have right of way at a roundabout. She made as if she was also entitled, not slowing for the roundabout then braked at the last moment.Truck driver must have been fully convinced that the silly woman was not looking and locked up the tyres in a panic brake. Guess he would have had a brown undies moment with all tyres locked up and barrelling straight ahead up and over the roundabout.
  4. Exactly so and got nothing to prove. Always laughing at the 4 cylinder cars screaming by me on the city streets thinking about how much the poor engine's neck is being wrung. Sometimes I can be naughty and encourage them to wring it even more. No officer, I was merely accelerating safely to the speed limit. On an equal basis, 2000rpm in a 6 = 3000 rpm in a 4.
  5. Your vehicle is out of manufacturer's new vehicle warranty, more than 10 years old and done more than 100,000 miles [160,000kms]. Vehicle maufacturers now want you to buy a new vehicle. My vehicle was built October 2006 and now has 214,000 kms. I have a replacement vehicle built December 2008 and has done 109,000kms. Suggest that you take the time to read all of the posts in this thread and make some notes as you go along. You can call Toyota Customer Service and see what they say. From memory, you will find the part number for replacement bolts in one of the posts. I occassionally spray some grease onto this steering shaft.
  6. I understand that DOT3 is more hygroscopic. Fast is smooth and smooth is fast. I reckon that I am smooth and fast in cornering on suburban streets. Slow down to enter, halfway point quick look to see road is still clear then accelerate letting the front wheel drive pull the vehicle through the corner. Aurion accelerates from 100kph and keeps on going. Overtaking a semi-trailer on the highway is quick and easy. I feel so much safer not having to be in the danger zone of oncoming traffic for a long time. Also lots of fun safely overtaking towing vehicles using the highway overtaking lanes.
  7. Reminds me of a set of brake pads that I bought on eBay. They made the wheel covers black. Must have been a really soft compound because I ended up replacing them about 12 months later. I am very light on the brakes and original brake pads on the 1998 Camry [bought new] lasted for 100,000+ kms.
  8. This would have been because of a past post in this Forum regarding compatability with the seals in the braking system. Better to be safe than sorry. https://www.toymods.org.au/forums/threads/33090-Brake-Fluid-DOT4-or-DOT3
  9. Precisely why last night, I did an Internet search for Brake Rotor Wear and Ceramic Brake Pads. https://www.bridgestonetire.com/tread-and-trend/drivers-ed/ceramic-vs-metallic-brake-pads https://www.autoanything.com/resources/what-are-the-best-brake-pads-ceramic-or-semi-metallic/ Your question has reminded me of a story I heard in my younger days, many many years ago. Fellow replaced his brake pads on his Fiat Sports with hard compound brake pads. Later he checked for pad wear and found out the rotor had worn down and pads were still as new. Maybe I should buy that set of Remsa Ultra Ceramic brake pads sooner and see how much rotor wear I do get. If State borders are opened by October, I will do a 4,500 km round trip to see my sister. Just have to remember to do some before and after rotor thickness measurements.
  10. Fuel prices in Brisbane have gone down some more so that 91 unleaded is now around $1 at some stations. Big change from when we were being price gouged @ $1.55+ and Sydney pricing was much cheaper. I use the Compare the Market Fuel website and spotted a nearby Independent has Premium 95 Unleaded less than $1 Going to refuel with either 91 or 95 unleaded this morning as the car's fuel tank is below half.
  11. Experience matters more so than marketing blurb. Nice to know that Jeffy indicated a nod of approval for the VMAX rotors which I bought being cheaper than DBA. Now put the Remsa Ultra Ceramic pads on my eBay watch list.
  12. I drive smoothly in that I try to avoid any hard braking. I have been using Bendix Ultimate pads for many years. I could go for their General pads but I prefer to have my Aurion setup for long distance cruising/driving. Original rotors are still fine but have yet to fit these rotors [both front and rear] I bought on eBay many months ago. Probably need to wear out another set of brake pads https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SLOTTED-VMAXS-fits-TOYOTA-Aurion-GSV40R-2006-Onwards-FRONT-Disc-Brake-Rotors/122678193968 I have done a bit of internet searching about braking distances and the best $$$ upgrade is a set of new tyres. In a recent post, I mentioned in a recent post that Michelin Primacy 4 [New Generation 2018/9] are now on my short list but I am not expecting to be buying tyres for quite some time. If you have deeper pockets and want a performance tyre, then you would have probably noticed good reviews for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres.
  13. With one of those, I reckon my license could be "Gone in 60 seconds". If you want to be more show off, you will get a lot more attention from the police. The exact opposite of some of these 6 reasons in the video is why I will be staying with my Aurion. 1. Sleeper car looks 2. Whisper quiet exhaust Maybe if I win Lotto and can afford another mid-life crisis with a nice sports car, then maybe I will find my way down to the local dealers to seriously look at what they have in stock. Most likely also have to buy the girlfriend a RAV4 or C-HR to make her happy as well.
  14. Your vehicle is E10 compliant so essentially all should be fine. However, my past very limited experience with E10 fuel is to expect the fuel economy to be worse. Another issue is how quickly you will be using that particular refill of E10 and water absoption. Personally, I stick with 91 unleaded but will buy an occasional tankful of E10 with 94octane when driving interstate. https://www.festanks.com.au/blog/storage-ethanol-fuel-pros-and-cons/.
  15. Nice OMIK tool. I searched eBay and could not find an equivalent quality product for less $$$ As for disposable income, it comes back to a lot of factors especially lifestyle choices and work ethic. Always remember being in the garage with my Dad when a fellow from down the street went by saying to my Dad how lucky he was to have all those tools. Dad said to me "Look at him cigarette in hand and going to the TAB. That is where he spends his money". Also being DIY helps to make the most of your disposable income.
  16. Nothing like having the right quality tools for the job. In my earlier days, I could not really appreciate the difference between sockets until I broke one tightening cylinder head bolts. Overcompensated by having lots of socket sets with lifetime warranty. Giving serious thought to dropping the transmission oil pan on my standby Aurion and doing an ATF flush. Lots of other planned tasks on 4 vehicles which I will not say at the moment. Rather say later what I actually did.
  17. Did another internet search thinking that I might find some overseas URLs. Following URL is more informative of the fuel pump recall. https://www.billrobertsontoyota.com.au/2020/03/05/toyota-australia-recalls-vehicles-due-fuel-pumps/
  18. Good point. I remember him as being a car dealer and not sure to what extent he had any support from Toyota. I am also remembering a mechanic named ***** Johnson how he appeared at Bathurst as an unknown.
  19. Absolutely so especially when it seemed to be running quite OK before I decided to clean the throttle body and the MAF sensor. I remember the old days of setting the points gap and cleaning the distributor cap. Electronic ignition is a blessing. Shame about all this pollution gear introduced in the 90's and still causing issues with the valves. Guess one of the reasons I like the Yaris is that there is plenty of room to work under the bonnet and it performs well on city streets.
  20. I do recall how competitive he was going across the mountain then down into Forest elbow. Really hauled in those bigger vehicles and made then look ungainly in their handling in that stretch of the track, then the V8s would get away down Conrod straight. Ah memories of a different time.
  21. I will always remember the axe being used on the boot so they could refuel the car plus the commentary. Not happy Jan. Presumably the museum is not open at the moment and now we have to stay at home as much as possible. When all the travel and meeting restrictions are lifted, guess you will just have to go.
  22. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, we should be staying home this Easter unlike other years. I am going to keeping busy with some preventative maintenance on my "mechanical girlfriends". Planning plenty of fluid checks and changes. Already prepared with all the necessary parts. Bought an oil filter for another vehicle last Sunday. Possibly also do a brake fluid change now rather than later in the year.
  23. I did see this news article on a few sites and noted shortage of availability of parts until June. https://www.caradvice.com.au/841102/toyota-recalls-cars-fuel-pump/
  24. Agree, it does look great. A pity the eBay seller was charging $55 for the Aurion version but only $35 for other Toyota versions. From what I can gather, it appears that the OMIK tool grabs the bottom of the housing much like an oversized socket. Also looked for an Australian seller for that steel removal tool but not prepared to pay double so I will wait.
  25. In the meantime, I ended up ordering this different removal tool. Took your experience onboard and made sure that it was steel. Coming from China so should arrive well after your update. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Oil-Filter-Wrench-Removal-Socket-Hand-Tool-for-Toyota-Lexus-Scion/183772075837?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
