10-12k to spend - what car to buy?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys/Girls,

I am chasing some ideas for a new ride. As much as I love my Sportivo, my overseas holiday requires funds so a quick sale fo the car into something a little cheaper might be the go.

So far i ahve been looking at Lexus IS200's but havent found one on the condition I want so I am open to new ideas. It doesnt need to be fast, but something with a bit of style would be good.

Let the ideas roll on in. fee free to post links to cars on carsales etc :)

i would get a is200 if you want style, bmw or mercs for that price are old POS

speed, get a civic or something

That's a very uneducated comment regarding the older BMW and Mercedes type vehicles.

my choice within budget: vw golf vr6 mk.III

..but keeping it with the Toyota Family: a Celica of some sort or even an older gen Corolla

my 2c :)

not a yaris, i don't care how jdm ppl think they are

whitestivo

Not a Stivo either... I don't care what people think of them :P

I wouldn't touch Caldina unless you like being a owner of a fairly rare car in Australia with possibly only the engine having something in common with other Toyota. This isn't against the Caldina, I've driven both the ST215 (GT-T) and ST246 (GT-Four), they're really something! However even if you have minor issues and need replacement parts, it'll be difficult to source...

alright.... so for 12k you can get a 00 model lexus or a 92 model e36 bema with 287000 on it and mercs for that price are even older and look like grandpas cars in the inside, as much style as a 121 bubble.

i would take the lex mate

whats your educated opinion?

I never wanted to argue the point as it's nothing to do with the topic but from playing around with a few old mercedes and BMW's my dad and his friends have owned i can vouch for their quality, especially when aged. I'd lean more towards a mercedes for the simple fact that you cannot go past them for build quality, absolutly amazing. Boring possibly but whats hot about a stock IS200 , they are about as quick as cammel

Lucky for the pay rise, as I couldn't really see you having much change left over after selling your car for $15-16k [optimistic] and then paying $12k+stamp duty/rego+insurance for a different car... :o

But a nice EP82 for ~$5k with some mods on the other hand. w00t! :toast:

Gav.
