Hello

I am new here.

I have a 2012 Aurion 2GR-FE V6. I would like to use 5W-30 in the engine but am confused by this page in my handbook (hope the link works)

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31300204/Oil%20Spec.jpg

Specifically the temperature range for 5W-30.

It doesn't look right compared to the other viscosities esp 10W-30. My understanding is that the 5W defines the lowest ambient starting temp which is basically irrelevant in most parts of Australia.

I would of thought that the upper ambient range would be the same as 10W-30. Given that Toyota USA recommends 0W-20 for V6 camrys in the USA I am thinking that 5W-30 would pose no problem here.

2 Local Toyota dealers as well as Toyota Australia are unable to tell me one way or another if 5W-30 can be used. I have had various responses none of which make any sense.

Thanks

i use it in mine so im guessing that you can, i havnt had any problems using it. imo it makes it run smoother and quiter

I cant see why 5w30 would be a problem. As long as the viscosity doesnt go above 40 because of the VVTI, but that would be when the car starts to get quite a few kays on it. If its got lower km's (under 75000km for example) I would recommend 5w30 or 10w30

it's totally fine to use 5w-30. will even be better in cold start.

refer to this thread:http://au.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/22298-what-oil/

Thanks for the link. Don't the 40 series and 50 series have different oil viscosity specs? Further muddies the waters so to speak.

The most disappointing thing in all this is the apparent lack of understanding of the oil spec page in the handbook by all of the Toyota personnel I have asked.

My opinion is that a good quality 5W-30 will be OK but I will probably go with Penrite PRO10 a semi sun 10w30. Very attractively priced.

Since the 40 and 50 series has the same engine and basically almost the same car. I can say it is almost the same.

Personally, I'll go for something fully Synthetic this http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products-categ.php?id_categ=1&id_viscosity=6

I am currently using this http://www.penriteoil.com.au/engineoils-products.php?id_categ=1&id_products=1 since its already 110000K on the clock.

But yeah, Nulon or Penrite or any other reputable fully Syn will never go wrong.

My aurion has done just over 122,000 on the clock and i have been using the 5w-30 grade oil, nulon to be exact when should you change to a higher grade of oil? say 10w-40 for example?

I've been running Penrite SIN 0 (now referred to as Penrite Premium 0) since my first oil change on my Aurion. That oil is a 0W-50, however it is really a 0W-40 just marketed to perform like a 0W-50. I still see it as a 0W-40 though.

Anyways, I've always used to get the VVT-i rattle around the 9,500km-10,000km mark as others here have reported and it would always go away with an oil change. Recently, I've stated to notice it a little earlier, down as low as 6,000km-7,000km. The car is at about 190,000km. I'm considering changing to a 10W-40 (Penrite Racing 10) at this point in its life as I feel the 0W is just a little too thin at startup temperature. If the table here is anything to go by, the 10W will be thicker at room temperature than the 0W.

But I don't think that really contributes much to your question though since I've been running a xxW-40 oil already.

For what its worth, it's drawing a long bow to recommend an oil and saying it's been fine since I have been using it.

Why not go directly to the horses mouth and use the recommended oil from a manufacturer like Castrol, the link below will take you there.

I would imagine other manufacturers have similar sites.

After all guys they make it, test and guarantee it!

I spoke to 3 dealers. One said outright do not use 5W-30 in the GSV50R (my car) because it will cause the "VVT" to knock. One waffled around and said use 10W-40 and one just said we only use 10W-30.

Not one of them could explain the apparent weird temp range chart in my handbook which I posted originally and their understanding of what the "W" means appears sketchy.

Just my 0.02, I will go a grade thicker as the car hits the next 100K kms or 120K kms mark.

Since your car is still very new and I am assuming somewhat under 50000km, I would stick to the hand book xW-30. You can go as low as 0w which you don't really need in Australia weather condition.

You can also refer to this thread as there is a small talk about different between the 40s and 50s series, and it seems to be almost exactly the same. http://au.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/45673-engine-power-upgrades/

I think that this previous post is an unexpected gem.  I did read all 6 chapters of the BTOG link. As expected, there is a lot more to selecting an engine oil than just the oil viscosity. Learnt and re-learnt more than expected.

Recent oil posts in other threads on this forum mentioning 0W-20 have re-energized my thinking.

Happened to come across this YouTube video from Chris Fix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKdhgKUZhPA

Interesting the fuel saving % quoted with thinner oils.

Definitely went and checked my owners manual for the Aurion 40 series for the oil recommendations.

End of the day, I am more interested in engine protection than performance than minor fuel savings.

Your ears must've been burning Ash, because I was having the very same thought about this very topic this morning and I came across this video.

You all should know who this guy is. The 0w-20 talk happens at around 5 mins.

This should be everyone's thoughts too. What little fuel saving you can gain is totally negligible vs long term engine survival. I'd take the latter any day.

The Aurion has pretty excellent fuel economy anyway and I can't really be bothered trying to squeeze 5 fifths of "you know what" 😁

Actually, I was having a good nights sleep for a change. Same video lol

Like a dog with a bone, I kept digging away and found these 2 articles.

https://www.chevronmarineproducts.com/content/dam/chevron-marine/bulletins-/Chevron_InfoBulletin06_ViscosityClass_v1019_1_DESKTOP.pdf

https://wiki.anton-paar.com/au-en/engine-oil/

I then went looking for the 2GR normal operating temperature and best estimate based upon the coolant thermometer temperatures is in the range of 95-102C.

Kept looking and consistent recommended oil viscosity for the 2GR is 5W-30. This is also the lowest viscosity mentioned in my owner's manual.

Good to hear mate. There's nothing better than a good night's sleep, oh, and a sludge free 2GR-FE

I can give you an accurate measurement next time I hook up my scan tool. I'll keep that one in mind Ash.

The engineers were correct then recommending the 5w-30. The engine seems to like it that's all I know.

Regarding engine oil: the takeaway is you MUST use what is designed for your engine which will be noted in your owners manual for your city/region.
