DJKOR , you use Premium 98 RON unleaded , is that right ?

Most of the time. If you open my spreadsheet in the link at the top of my post, it lists the fuel that I filled up with at the time.

Posted (edited)

About 10minutes after refuelling, when I refuel the average consumption started from 30L/100KM and started adjusting and and going all over the place until it settled.

This is my second re-fill since I got the car from the dealer. First time I refilled was a full tank of shell98 and now $50 tank @ $1.42 with again shell98 again.

If you can do some manual calculations that would be great. Just keeping in line with my intentions of this thread.

Also you will find that unless you keep driving the way you did (or better) for the first 10 minutes, over the distance it takes to use the fuel in the tank, you will find that it is probably going to change from that value.

Yeah mate, I've been a bit lazy to do a proper manual average. On my next refuel, I'll do it. I have a excell document that someone sent to me and I use that to do my manual consumptions.

Made the following trips in the last week.

Bathurst to Sydney Airport and onto Port Macquarie with the following manual calculation (and car estimate).

595.9 k's, 45.43 lts, = 7.6237 L/100 (car said 7.6 L/100).

Port Macquarie to Bathurst (with a couple of small detours along the way).

583.1 k's, 45.39 lts, = 7.7842 L/100 (car said 7.7 L/100).

Both runs on Vortex 95 a/c if used set to 24 and cruise control used and set at the speed limit where possible.

Return trip had us slowed to a crawl coming into Newcastle for approx 15 - 20mins due to people coming home from up north.

Time for yet another update. I've been around Brisbane mostly for the last month, so this means more of my usual crazy city driving. Depite that, and the fact that I now have a new intake which has led me to constant red-lining, my fuel average seems to be getting better.

Maybe my engine has finally broken in fully

Anyways, time for the figures. At this point in time, I have been driving the car for 21 months and have spent $10,044.70 on fuel.

Aurion Fuel Consumption (Excel Spreadsheet)

I'm not an Aurion owner yet, but I am seriously considering purchasing one shortly. We recently hired an AT-X Aurion from Hertz for a five week trip from Sydney to Adelaide over Christmas to visit family and I was curious about the fuel economy so I kept records.

We have a young child and this was our first long trip with him so we didn't know how well he would travel, thus the driving days were generally fairly short (although somewhat longer on the return trip) - it was generally open road driving using cruise control set at the speed limit, so mostly 110kph or 100kph and generally very relaxed on quiet roads - not much overtaking required. There was only a little bit of city driving during the trip.

The car was fully loaded with gear - boot was completely full, plus the back seat had gear on it (and a baby) as well. Fuel was just typical 91 regular unleaded. Car had around 33,000km on the odo when we picked it up. Car was driven with aircon on high most of the trip because it was pretty much 42 degrees or more every day!!

Distance: 4741.8km total

Fuel used: 416.1L

Avg consumption: 8.8 L/100km

I was quite impressed with this result - I was expecting mid-9's

Posted

I wouldn't list my fuel consumption here as the figure is surprisingly high.. Haha.. Big wheels, too much city driving and sydney's overly crowded.. I can tell for sure my average runs around 15L/100km. Once I got 8.9L/100km, with full loaded passengers.. So to conclude, Aurion is impressive!

Anyways, time for the figures. At this point in time, I have been driving the car for 21 months and have spent $10,044.70 on fuel.

Dude , over $10 Grand in fuel in less than two years :o

I calculated my fuel bill for the whole of 2009 to be $1435.86 ( for a 96 Camry )

How many klms have you done ?

At around 30000K i started using synthetic oil "stupid of me to wait for so long" and ever since i noticed a huge difference in both performance and fuel average. Performance wise before when i was using regular oil sometimes my car would feel slow during the heat or after running the car for a good while but using the synthetic oil...there is consistency with performance.

And i used to get 16 - 18 L/100Km average on a daily basis, and sure i usually drive fast but lowest i could get it was 14 most of the time. Now my fuel average doesn't go above 14 L/100Km lol. I usually get 12 - 13 L/100Km. God bless whoever invented synthetic oil.

Hi,

Not meaning to change the topic too much but I have just returned from holidays and had a large variation in fuel economy over a few thousand km's. I know most of you don't tow but if it helps one person.

At all times I was towing a Jayco Camper which weighs about 1.4T loaded and stuck around the speed limit on the highways <=100km/hr

I found using cruise control a no no, even on relatively flat roads - 18 ltr/100km (Caltex 95 Octane)

Not using 6th gear (keeping it in 5th sequential and below) - 17 ltr/100km

95 Octane/E10 - 16 ltr/100km

95 Octane Caltex - 14 ltr/100km

91 Octane .... - 16 ltr/100km

I usually go well with the E10 fuel, but I don't think that it likes towing as well.

Tips that help me.

Keep it 100km/hr or less, except for down hill.

Use Sequential shift to change gears on the hill rather than the accelerator.

Why was CC a no no when towing?

Edit: I see with CC on you had worse fuel consumption. Why?

I found with CC on, it just rev'd and changed gears a lot more. I'm sure thats OK, just that it used more fuel.

Saying "no no" may have going a bit too far.

Before I moved, I had about a 25 minute commute to the train station each way (about 24ks) and averaged 8.5l/100.

I found that most of the fuel burn was actually during the cold start program. If I went on longer journeys on the highway, I would easily see 7.5/100 and even as low as 7.2 on a really long trip (i.e. > 2hrs) (and no - I don't drive it at granny speeds, and I don't believe my speedo at 100 is actually 100 - if you get the drift).

And on a trip to western QLD, i saw 6.9l/100... (I set tyre's before leaving).

Now I have moved into BNE and we hardly use the car. When we do, it's to run up the road and is pretty well always running cold-start. We're now seeing about 12.5L/100... But I only fill it once every two months so I can't complain!

I will tell you what got us by surprise was how we took .5 of a litre off our commute (and some may b sceptical, but we proved it twice - i know - not a good sample but good enough for me).

We almost never wash our car (we sit inside it - not outside). I know - I've probably upset most of the forum members by saying that. So, needless to say, it got absolutely filthy and covered in dust/grime/oil/bugs e.t.c all over.

We spent a day cleaning it and waxed it, and immediately noticed a drop in fuel consumption on our commute. Again, over a period of about three months, this slowly crept back up, and we cleaned/waxed it again... Fuel efficiency gain of .5 again! In fact, I it was closer to .7 for the first week, but that could have been a number of factors that gained the extra .2 on the first week.

There is something to be said for keeping your car clean!

Cheers,

SkyHigh.

okay, here is my input.

I've had my car for just over 3 years (on 18inch)

81053kms, and 9879.16 Litres

My conclusion, if you want to use less fuel, don't floor it. (<2000rpm, haha)

Yet again... another fuel average update from me.

Since I did some interstate driving, I figured this help to bring my fuel average down a little. I've also noticed ever since the last time at the drags, I don't have as much urge to hit redline any more.

My fuel average for my return trip from the Hunter Valley to Brisbane was shown on the meter to be 8.5l/100km. Upon manual calculation, this worked out to be 8.3l/100km (61.55 litres for 741.3km of travel). I found this to be quite a good figure considering that for most of the way, I was going around 10km/h over the designated speed limit and that this drive involved a couple of inclines reaching a maximum altitude of 1400 metres above sea level.

Compared to my figures for my drive from Melbourne to Brisbane where I obtained 8.2l/100km sticking to the speed limit and going no faster, it seems that this is about the fuel consumption figure I will obtain for my interstate travel. I did notice on the way there that I could get a figure under 8.0l/100km if I was to travel between 80-90km/h continuously, but me being me, this isn't an option.

Anyways, time for the figures:

Aurion Fuel Consumption (Excel Spreadsheet)

- At 4010km, my total fuel used was 417.14L and my average fuel consumption was 10.4L/100km

Hi we're getting far far higher fuel consumptions than most people here - 14.2L/100km!

Me, my mum and dad all have a soft foot, and the car hardly ever goes over 2000rpm. Driving was all urban driving with a decent amount of starting/stopping at lights, but 14.2? I think that's way too high for driving with a soft foot..

However, we use the aircon all the time, could this add so much to the fuel consumption??

P.S. This was a one time manual calculation & shall be doing more in the future.

Yes, Air-con does affect the fuel consumption. However, I can't say how much is the effect. I once parked my Aurion with air-con on, the reading on the ave. fuel increase faster compared to when parked with air-con off. It's the same while it's rolling. The decent amount of start and stop also have impact on the readings.

Mate, it's nothin to worry about. I now got 15-17L/100km in a city driving with extra weights on my 20s. While travelling to canberra, I got 8.8L/100Km.

Well, since I've been using this thread to keep records, I may as well continue... even though the fuel consumption is bound to be higher. So it's now time to start fresh again.

TRD Fuel Consumption (Excel Spreadsheet)

- At 5313km, my total fuel used was 500.99L and my average fuel consumption was 9.43L/100km

This figure could have been quite a bit lower considering 2000 of those kilometres was used driving from Adelaide to Brisbane. However, there was quite a lot of straight road to cover and well... lets just say the car wasn't at a fuel efficient cruising speed during that time. Plus the fact I've been running her pretty hard as to be expected.

Noticed you topped up twice with 95RON fuel and even a bit of the 91RON stuff at around the time you were driving back from Adelaide to Brisbane. Did you noticed anything different driving the TRD with the lower RON fuel?

With regards to that, I fuelled up with what was available. Unfortunately 95 was all that seemed to be around. You can see I only filled up a small amount of 91 to get me to the next town.

On 95, it seemed to operate fine. I avoided putting my foot down and/or going above 5000RPM where possible, but in the moments where I had to, it seemed alright.

When I filled with 91, I drove with a lot of caution just to be on the safe side. I wasn't really testing the effects of the fuel, so I can't really accurately comment. I was just doing what I had to do.
