Fuel Consumption

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I think the surge of fuel prices has made many of us concious of the fuel spending. :D hehe...

I decided to drive really smooth. The Key is to be concious of the right foot. make sure it is only a touch and 1cm depress... or something like that. I find sometime it is easy to press more and more over time and I have to lift off and reset my gentle throttle to ensure i don't press too much.

With this limit on the throttle. it is easy to see that it is often not possible to keep at 5th gear. in a busy street, 3rd is the best gear for <50km/h. 4th for >50km/h. on acceleration to highway change to fifth >70km/h.

you can drive a 5th at 60km/h if there is not acceleration or braking eg. when u see an empty road.

I have a 1zz manual. so for sportivo, just use 6th instead.

so my latest mileage is 7.3L/100km using Shell normal fuel. Not premium and not RON98. B)

I've just pumped BP ultimate, see if I can get something better.

James

Remember our cars are VVTi - intelligent etc...

You drive slow, the ecu will 'train' itself that way. When you want to hump it power wise it won't be as responsive.

So I guess we have to decide whether we want better fuel economy or response in the end.

From a designing viewpoint Toyota are my champion Phill ;) They are smart buggers, like Nissan/Mazda and especially Honda etc. After sales service though? BLARGH!

But yeah...if you add a cai obviously it's going to be using for fuel too yadda yadda. This is all ok for me though, as my other car is a ford escort which has dual 45mm weber carbies on it. 1 1/2 tanks to get to sydney rofl. WOOOOOT.

That is why sometime (on highway) I push hard...(but most of time change gear at 3000)...worry become slow rolla!

Im seriously getting worried about the fuel consumption in the car.

My car is Auto and has done almost 60000km.

Previously the car would get driven harder and get 300km by half tank, and at least 550km before any lights came on (this is on the regular 91 ron stuff, i would get 50km more on the 98ron premium)

These days its getting 200km by half tank, and 420km when the light comes on (this is on 98 premium too :o )

WTF is going on? What can i do the improve the economy? Is there something wrong with my car? Any particular things to look out for or get my mechanic to do on the 60000km service?

Sounds exactly like my car... Auto conquest currently at 76K...396km when the light comes on///"(

Maybe its too early, my mechanic suggested getting the injectors cleaned properly....not those bottles that you put into the tank before you fill up :D

Cheers

You referring to the fuel injection clean that costs like $100 or something? The one where they have some high powered device to flush out the gunk??

What about the MAF sensor, ive read about ppl cleaning it? Whats the benefits of cleaning it?

Dunno if its high powered or not, they use some sort of ultrasonic (vibration) device to clean it...not sure on the pricing, never done it before. Well my car use to idle around 800rpm its currently at around 600rpm after cleaning the MAF sensor, if you use an oil based filter (K&N) then I suggest cleaning it each time you clean your filter. You will save some fuel, not that much but throttle response is much better and your car feels smoother. I started a topic about cleaning MAF sensors last time

Cheers

I wouldn't be too worried if you guys can't replicate my mileage. Just like some cars make more power than others some use more fuel then others. Example is my dad's 05 sportivo, he gets worse economy than my car (which he used to own) but he has more power and mid range torque.

A tip for auto owners is to put your car in neutral when you stop instead of leaving it in drive so the engine doesn't has to fight the torque converter ;) Also after cleaning my MAFS I got better economy even though I only used an oiled air filter for a week a while back.

Old thread revival!

Just filld up and got 865km from 57L giving me 6.59L/100km (42.8 MPG for the old skool). I could have cracked the 900km mark :o . Driving was about 60% highway, 40% city on Optimax Extreme and yes I did use lift on occassion, otherwise I shifted at 3000rpm.

I bet this is nothing new to the 1ZZ owners.

Good one Superdave, yes indead a 1zz can do better, my old Silver Levin (pre facelift) got 5.8 Lt/100 on a trip to Byron Bay and back (that's 48.4 mpg in old school talk).

Oct 05 build Sportivo, bought new in December. I run it on Caltex Vortex 98 (most of the time) or BP Ultimate 98.

23K kays on the clock, best fuel efficiency is 8.6L/100kms for a full tank. Generally around 9L/100kms though.

maybe people with higher km(60000-70000km) should get a bottle of injector cleaner, or a bottle of octane booter and cleaner, it prevents pinging and cleansyour injectors, so the car have better response and get more km out of a tank, and its only 10buck and adds to the fuel tank

97 4a-fe... 11L+ per 100km haha, worked though.

As a point of interest, my manual fto gives around ~9l/100km if i go fairly nice on it (just a shielded pod). That's a 2L V6... Fuel consumption efficiency has certainly moved on.

Not hitting lift - but been hitting something ... not the curb I know that ...
